Part two of the documentary was an entertaining watch. Loved watching Marr creating those riffs on the spot. And is always nice to see Gem around! What actually killed me was watching Noel playing electric guitar (riffs included) in Pretty Boy and making me wonder even more why on earth is he playing this tune with an acoustic guitar live? Come on Noel, let it have all the punch it deserves! Even Council Skies with the electric guitar sounds good

I don’t know anything about music theory, but could it be Jess was trying to “harmonize” with Noel’s vocals, and that’s why it sounds off-key when isolated? Backing vox sound weird isolated because it has to counter the main melody, so sometimes it can go in an odd direction. It didnt shock me as way off key although it probably is, but what i know from my little experience is that weird backing vox can sometimes create some sort of magic when mixed with the "main" vocal part. There's no rule in rock n roll, it just have to sound good in the mix. They probably corrected it afterwards with autotune. Of course, that does not include the Beach Boys, who were perfect in their harmonies. Or the Bee Gees. But its a different kind of music.

I don't get Noel calling this the high water mark of his solo career. As an album it does next to nothing for me other than DTTW and TOAN. Chasing Yesterday is it for me by quite a large margin.

She doesn't sound good on her own... But if you listen to the part when her voice is mixed with Noel's vocals it kinda works pretty well. Oh for sure, but it's just surprising is all.

Marketing. He does not seem to be enjoying himself in those sessions. Looks like a boring work day at best, and he's playing for the camera.

What do you want him to do, install a laugh track in the studio? ffs.

Maybe but overall what we are seeing is the end of the process. Most has been recorded already, the part where hes doing the work. Maybe on part 4 but i doubt it. Its more a documentary on Noel doing the finishing of a record than doing a record. Bar the odd guitar.

Those two songs, for me, are my personal high water marks for NGHFB, save for maybe Dead in the Water or Sail On

It's surprising how much guitar they recorded which is all kind of smothered by the strings on the album. I was surprised Johnny Marr was credited on Open The Door... but on Part 2 of this documentary you can see / hear his contributions. That song could do with a de-mix to let the guitars breath. And Gem's lick on I'm Not Giving Up Tonight - when you know its there you can just about discern it on the album.
Maybe for his next album he should strip it back - record live in the studio with the Stacey's or Gem, Russ and Chris? Turn up the guitars!

I know, I mean I, a man of 41 years old, have fallen into weeks long bed ridden pits of despair when I can barely wash myself at far less than a divorce. This man recorded a really rather good album, and one thing these videos show, it does involve a lot of work bringing all the moving parts together. I have no idea how anyone does that at the best of times, let alone when their world is falling apart and they're living in a hotel. And I don't think he looks bored anyway. I wish I was that 'bored' in my job. But I do agree I wish he'd let the guitars let rip. I don't know if it was his mood when he came to mixing, probably not as he does have form in this kind of thing!

I dont think the strings are hiding the guitars though, its just that he used softer sounds for the guitars and buried the heavier ones. The acoustic guitars particularly are criminal. Its like Noel lost his magical recipe and is delivering soup instead to save the meal. But somehwere deep down, there was a very raw record, blended with orchestra and female backing vocals. Something that could have sounded like Phil Spector in the 60s.

He basically lives in hotels half of the year and seems to enjoy it. I'd say he wasn't too happy to come back home ! Of course that probably changed nowadays. Anyway, That documentary is weird. There is not one take of him "actually" playing for the record. Its still a nice watch

Come on Noel, let it have all the punch it deserves! Even Council Skies with the electric guitar sounds good Yeah this was very strange. Pretty Boy sounded brilliant with the electric brought to the fore in the documentary, and as others have said, plenty of the tracks have obviously got some nice guitar work well and truly buried, or outright removed which really removes some of their 'punch' (for lack of a better word). That said, it's a great little bonus and does make my view the album in a slightly different way. There's lots of good tunes on CS but in terms of the finished recordings, I'd say that only Dead to the World, There She Blows and Think of a Number are close to realising their full potential, with I'm Not Giving Up Tonight, Pretty Boy and Open the Door.... being particular casualties of poor mixing.

So had to give it another listen, maybe i was harsh. But no. That record is all over the place, think of a number on the same record as i'm not giving up and dead to the world which are the only tracks that stand out.
Its like Cure adding their tune to a pale early 70s rolling stones record. I mean WTF. It just does not make sense.
Open the Door drags for hours, it seems. And Noel recycled a lot of ideas, guitar parts, ending, and melodies from his other records, Consciously or not.
It really sounds like a best of record compiled by a record label and not the artist. Well more like a Bside and outtakes best of with songs that were partly used on other more known songs. Its a really weird feeling.
Noel can do so much more than this bore fest.

Yeah that's my guess too. She was there for the finishing phase of the record, where guests come to add their part. But everything is done.

Finally some TOAN and some DTTW. A bit more Pretty Boy sadly because we see Mike Rowe record his parts. But it's crazy the amount of texture he adds to the record, I love that! But again, the amount of guitars that are hidden in the mix is shocking... also the number of solos that were tried for TOAN is crazy and it ended up being so simple (not a bad thing I love the solo).
