'Think of a Number' sounds like 'While The Song Remains The Same' re-imagined by The Cure in 1989. Great track, definitely a highlight. Oooh, that sounds promising! Looking forward to tomorrow.
I'll have the album on repeat while I try to purchase Pulp tickets. A proper Britpop morning...
There's a bit of While The Song Remains The Same in there but I'd describe it more as a cross between Falling Down and Lovesong. It's brilliant, you're going to love it.

I thought Noel's cover of Love Will Tear Us Apart was decent...he's no Ian Curtis but it works. I've been listening to his cover of it all day, I know a load of people think it's shit - and yeah it's not a patch on the original - but I really love his take on it. His vocals are pretty fucking dour and he sounds completely defeated which I guess echoes his divorce, but I think it works really well when put together with the band and orchestra. We all know it's an absolutely nothing compared to Joy Division, but I honestly think his cover is still quite moving.

Does anyone have a proper image of the HMV alternative artwork? Not really high res... but this is the best I could get:

Does it sound more or less like The Cure than Pretty Boy did? I get where the similarities with The Cure were supposed to be in Pretty Boy, but I've never thought it sounded THAT much like them. (I know, big surprise. A Noel song doesn't sound like what he hyped it up to sound like).

For me, here's the music I actually value here:
1. Dead To The World 2. Trying To Find A World That's Been And Gone Pt. 1 3. Don't Stop... 4. We're Gonna Get There In The End 5. Mind Games
Special mention to 'Flying On The Ground' and "We're On Our Way Now' which are beautiful songs, even if not on the album.

Pretty much the same but in a different way. Pretty Boy is a riff on A Forest musically but melodically it's different. Think Of A Number melodically is very similar to Lovesong and has the tone of a Cure song, but musically it's like a cross between Falling Down and While The Song Remains The Same, it even has nearly same TNK-esque drum beat as Falling Down along with the ooohhhhh's. It'll make sense when you hear it Edit: The chorus of the song is its own thing though.

Think of a number is the one proper magic Noel moment I'm getting on the album. The one song where the handbrake is off, there are changes to song structure, contemplative lyrics that don't sound easy or lazy, a couple extended instrumental moments that make you want to close your eyes and sway to the music. It's magic.

Damn. He sounds so much vulnerable here that it's almost shocking. Like a punch in the stomach. Not what you usually expect from Noel.

Holy crap, I take back everything I said in my last post. Shouldn't have doubted you Noel! This is stunning. Think of a Number, just wow, the layers, the instrumentation, and there's complexity throughout the songs we hadn't heard that I was worried would be completely absent from the album. Love the dark n dirty vibe of There She blows. Noel doing soul on INGUT, more of that please. OTD, SWYF has already grown on me too which bodes well.
And it's a real heart break album hey? Some of those lyrics, glad I'm not in a heart broken place right now or some of this could be a tough listen. Odd to hear such direct personal vulnerability from Noel, knowing what the songs are about, though being him he does it without making the songs a depressing listen. Guess the marriage problems began a long time ago given when this was all written.
Absolutely love the additions to WGGTITE, and respect to him for deliberately ensuring it wouldn't be a single - one in the eye for those who claim this album is a cynical attempt to regain commercial appeal with the masses. If it was about that this song would be a single. (If you haven't seen there was an interview where he said he could tell the record label had big plans for it and would make it a single if they could, which he did not want at all). While a fantastic piece of pop, I can see why he felt it didn't fit the spirit of the album. I wonder if he wrote it when he hoped for a different outcome to what was going on in his personal life, hence not wanting it on the album proper when things went how they did.
What was going on with the single choices I have no idea, but it makes a very pleasant change not to have heard the best songs already and be left with the lesser stuff on release. When does that ever happen?
Noel's obviously had a very tough time of it, and I think we should probably stop claiming he's bottled it after WBTM by doing a note traditional album. Firstly, I don't think that's what he's done, and secondly, I think it's pretty clear why he would want to make this album at this point in his life even if he had other plans before events took over. I doubt his head was in a very cosmic pop place - that is what would have been fake, not this.
Thank you Noel, take a bow son.
P.S do find someone without tinnitus to do the mixing though :-p

Love the musical arrangement, and he looks like he's pouring some emotion into the guitar, but it doesn't really work for his voice as it is.

If I had to rank the tracks:
Dead To The World I'm Not Giving Up Tonight There She Blows Think of A Number Trying To Find A World That's Been Gone Easy Now Love is A Rich Man Council Skies Pretty Boy Open The Door, See What You Find
We're Gonna Get There in The End would be somewhere between from 5-7 First 4 are a tier above the rest, such brilliant songs

There She Blows, I'm Not Giving Up Tonight, and Think Of A Number definitely should have been singles. Probably my three favorite songs from the album, with Dead To The World and Trying To Find A World That's Been Gone rounding up the top five.

I feel like trying to find a world that’s been and gone would have been a great opener to the album. After the whole covid thing, it’s got the feel of rising from the ashes of the whole pandemic and starting over again

There She Blows is fantastic. Stunned that wasn't a single. Not classic NG at all. Super impressed at it.
