It has shades of This Is Hardcore by Pulp, just not quite as good. Similar vibe. I actually really like The Man Who Built The Moon though. This Is Hardcore is a great track though. Even if TMWBTM is only half as good, that's still good.. this is Hardcore is a masterpiece. Shame nobody bought it. From track 1 to track 12, even the bsides and the demos. It's a work of art. Who Built the Moon is good, but nowhere near as good as TIH. Indeed. This is Hardcore is a great album, and TIH as a song is an incredible centrepiece for the album. TIH as a song has a similar vibe to TMWBTM but it's a difference between a truly great song and a good song. TIH is sublime. The Fear is a great album opener too. Sounds like a real hangover/comedown. Captured the end of that era perfectly.

FK- dece opener. I actually like the alarm clock.. HM- love it; fight me KOR- Not sure about the "can you keep a secret" bit, but catchy af so whatevs IABW- love it, love the French bit, I feel like I'm in an airport STMHTF- both guitar and bass riffs play so good together. I'm a sucker for delay so all of this U2 shit just hits me where it's nice BCWYWF- ugh. that chicipah nonsense behind the "come together" bits. barf- nice job, dad. Spiritualized's "cop shoot cop" does such a better job with this riff- and they repeat it for 15 minutes. B&WS- really 90sy dare I say REMish I(WP1)- ILITL- a real phil spector/pet sounds kinda tune. TMWBTM- growing on me, not the instant classic some have gushed about- but the choir fake or real is good. EC(WP2)- I'm happy he's explored the territory he shined a light to with TRS from CY.
DITW- whatever. its good but I'm more interested in the new (for him) ideas. that said.. GHUA- Guys! this fucking song is great.

On first listen Fort Knox, Holy Mountain, It's a Beautiful World, Be Careful What You Wish For and The Man Who Built the Moon are the standouts. Holy Mountain still the favourite for now.

The Man Who Built the Moon, what a tune

1. FORT KNOX - 8/10. Great opener that sets the mood of the album is an epic way. I know it wasn't a single, but shouldn't have been released as a standalone piece, in my opinion.
2. HOLY MOUNTAIN - 7/10. Works good in the context of the album, however it's still unimpressive as the lead single. Not sure if it's a "grow-er" or a "used-to-er".
3. KEEP ON REACHING 6/10. Musically it's very rich and the production actually works, but melodically doesn't work for me.
4. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL WORLD 9/10. Absolutely fantastic beat/bassline that propels the song. The guitar licks are also great. One of the best choruses on the album. Should have been the 1st single, in my opinion.
5. SHE TAUGHT ME HOW TO FLY 7/10. No real flaws in this song, but it never really lifts off. The chorus is good enough to keep me interested for the entire 5 minutes, but the whole track feels a tad too long. It wouldn't sound out of place on "Waiting for the Sirens' Call" by New Order.
6. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR 7/10. Very interesting for a song that has ONE chord in it. It's like "Come Together" on weed. I think it will grow on me even more.
7. BLACK & WHITE SUNSHINE - 7/10. 'The Good Rebel' mark II (and I actually DO like TGR!). In general, it sounds like a Johnny Marr solo tune. The most uplifting (unfortunately not the "best") chorus that Noel's written for a long time.
8. INTERLUDE (Wednesday Part 1) - I will not rate this piece, cause it's meant to be...well...an interlude. Sounds a bit like something from Doves' "Lost Souls".
9. IF LOVE IS THE LAW - 5/10. No, I just don't like it. I understand what it's supposed to be, but I find it pretty annoying. The verse melody starts like "Neverending Story" theme tune and the chorus sounds like it was written by fucking Ed Sheeran during a depression episode. "Solsbury Hill" my ass...
10. THE MAN WHO BUILT THE MOON 10/10. Seriously 10. Flawless, epic, menacing beast. If "Holy Mountain" could have been on Austin Powers soundtrack, then TMWBTM is the best Bond theme that never was. Pure fucking genius.
11. END CREDITS (Wednesday Part 2) - same as 8.
Bonus:
12. DEAD IN THE WATER - 9,5/10. "Conventional" Noel, but in the best way possible. Part of me thinks that this is the perfect version, stripped off of any additional distractions, but the other part of me thinks that the song would be a hell of a song with lush, epic production. On par with the likes of 'The Masterplan'. Anyhow, brilliant songwriting and a fucking lesson for people who try too hard to write a ballad (see 'For What It's Worth' or 'Paper Crown').

I love the album! I also spent a lot of time thinking about what Black and White Sunshine reminded me of... like everyone has said, it sounds like a Johnny Marr tune. Then I realized it reminds me a lot of the musical bits in Hand in Glove!

That's what it reminded me of and I couldn't really put a finger on it, shame on me Well, I thought the riff screamed Johnny Marr since I heard the live version of B&WS last night. Mind me, I still haven't heard the album take.

Honestly my first impression is that the songs on this album are lower quality then his prior 2 releases. There's still quality on it of course, but I'm kinda underwhelmed. Maybe it will grow on me with more listens, who knows?

After listening to the album, I can't help to think something I've thought about Noel and Oasis for years: that they must have really poor advisors and end up doing exactly the opposite of what they should've done to be more successful or have a better creative output. This evaluation is clearly subjective but I'm going to explain what I mean.
"Dead in the water" is the strongest song but instead of being properly produced, we just got a live take, not even a demo. It has an emotional chorus and great lyrics. Great structure that feels cohesive and complete. Under this lens, the second best song in the album is "Black & White Sunshine". Again, feels like a complete song, with meaningful transitions and a structure that makes sense as a whole.
"Be Careful What You Wish For" is super groovy and is begging for a transition. Instead Noel decided to add female vocals that just say "ah" without a clear melody attached to it. I'm not suggesting it should have a "DLBIA" equivalent chorus. But monotony isn't the alternative.
"It's A Beautiful World", "She Taught Me How To Fly", "Keep on Reaching" and "The Man Who Built The Moon" (which btw has a "Soldier On" vibe) are good songs. It seems people are most excited about the latter and I can agree with that. However, all of these have the same sort of "A-A-B" structure and are missing a "C". They are just a big tease for something that never arrives. I wonder if this is on purpose.
"Fort Knox" is good but could be shorter. Or at least give me something more radical, like a cool solo -- synth, guitar or otherwise.
"Holy Mountain" is "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" meets "She Bangs". Yeah. No bueno.
"If Love is The Law" is decent. Maybe one of the most cohesive in the album.
The 2 "Wednesday instrumentals" are fine, but I feel the same as with "Swamp Song" -- tricked that they get to call these as 2 individual tracks when they really aren't actual songs and they just make the track count higher.
I liked the album. Cause I love Noel. His voice and his style. But I'm left wanting more because the whole experience feels like unfinished work that could've used a bit more thinking.
Let's be honest. It's a 3/5.

There the other albums may have been a bit let down by bland production in places, this one is let down by bland songs, which is a bit worse really. The production on Noel's first solo effort might be extremely unimaginative, but it's still ok because the songs seem to have a genuine spirit and enthusiasm which i don't hear on this album.

For me it's quite the opposite. This album has a spirit and effusiveness to it and within its songs I hadn't seen Noel with for a long, long time.

The album is fantastic. I feel like Holy Mountain is the only "bad" song in it.

It's very strong.
Like with CY, I was a bit unenthusiastic after hearing the singles but the full album and the songs I knew nothing about all turned out to be pretty fantastic. His best solo work so far is on this album and I think Alone on the Rope may have finally been surpassed as a singular tune. Really impressed in a lot of ways. The progression from NGHFB > CY > this is more readily apparent.
I hope he finally gets out of the mindset of "needing" radio friendly singles. I don't think any of them are "bad", but they all come across as forced, whereas the album tracks all have more of an organic growth to them. Holy Mountain is by far the weakest tune for me, just as In The Heat of The Moment was.
In comparison to my first hours with CY, I was skipping tracks like The Mexican very early on. I'm not skipping anything here.

I am very pleased with this album. There's not a bad song on it.
I enjoy Be Careful Of What You Wish For, but I think it's a tad bit too long. Overstays its welcome. Groovy as fuck though.

I couldn't disagree more. A lot of people thought DGSS was great when it first leaked though, when it's mostly garbage and the same for many other albums. It's not bad at all but once the novelty wears off, i think a lot of people will start to see it's really not that good either. It's cool though, being over-excited is the best way to enjoy music.
