TMWBTM has got a killer riff, soundtrack to a murder scene on a Tarantino film! just ran an OOPS mix on it, amazing brass work is hidden in those layers It has shades of This Is Hardcore by Pulp, just not quite as good. Similar vibe. I actually really like The Man Who Built The Moon though. This Is Hardcore is a great track though. Even if TMWBTM is only half as good, that's still good..

Apart from 2-3 tunes, i have to say i'm disappointed with the record. Noel should take a hiatus and write a great record like NGHFB in terms of song quality, but with better production. David Holmes did a good job but can't polish a turd. There are only moments of greatness (TMWBTM, STMHTF, DITW) and the rest is pretty average. Holmes created the turd though, he isn't trying to polish it. He didn't want to work with songs Noel had written and wanted to do it from scratch and write in the studio and that's why it's lacking in good songs. Everything sounds forced and i don't think this process works for Noel in terms of getting the best songs out of him. Someone like Damon Albarn should produce Noel, seriously. He is a guy that understands songwriting but has a great ability to drift between genres, can create straight forward music, as well as experimental music but the emphasis is still always on well crafted songs. He can take basic good pop songs and take them somewhere else musically. I don't think the collaboration with Dave Holmes worked either. Noel should try different things, but without compromising the best thing about his songwriting ability (simple but beautiful melodies). Maybe with Damon it will work. He writes catchy songs, but with modern sound. His work with Gorillaz shows that.

Two random thoughts:
- If Love is the Law is like Solsbury Hill meets To Be Someone. - The Man Who Built the Moon sounds like a hybrid between Macca and Nick Cave, if you can imagine that. Love the strong dissonances on this one. That's definitely a first for Noel.

Chasing Yesterday > Who Built the Moon? > NGHFB (only because the production is so lifeless)
A worthy experiment but it's not fantastic.

i really like 'she taught me how to fly', but in my opinion the live version blows the album version out of the water.

The two Wednesday instrumentals (which I don't really count), Keep on Reaching and Be Careful sound like clear filler material to me, worse than the worst songs on Chasing Yesterday.
This leaves seven songs of which I love at least four. Weird album, but where it works it REALLY works.

It’s just alright for me on first listen. It is different but it doesn’t seem to be that ‘out there’. Doesn't Have To Be That Way is more experimental. It isn't. Tame Impala did that for years. What is it that you think that WBTM does that hasn't been done before? It's original and experimental for Noel, but hardly groundbreaking.

Me saying that It doesn't have to be that way isn't groundbreaking doesn't necessarily mean that I think WBTM IS.

Overall it's a solid/good record. But i'm dissapointed. Noel Gallagher can do it better. The Chief should do it better. He's one of the greatest songwriters!

The flute thing that comes in in the middle of Interlud part 1 reminds me of the melody, "selfies what a fuckin disease"

Someone should do a mash-up Awesome album, this is what I want after CY. Definitely his best solo album. 'Best after WTSMG' is an overstatement though. Was a bit worried prior to listening because both Holy Mountain and IABW were kinda empty and style over substance for me. Really really glad the album is far more interesting! Can't understand the bizarre single choices.

I'm on my 3rd listen. Will be doing a proper track-by-track review (I love these, can't help myself; looking forward to read others too!) in a few days.
My favourite track is The Man Who Built The Moon. The one I'm not really into is Black & White Sunshine.
The thing that caught my attention the most so far is the use of the bass. By far the best in every Gallagher-related project.

Who Built the Moon is good, but nowhere near as good as TIH.

Also, on bside, Cocaine Socialism brass section sounds a lot like Holy Moutain.

Fuck. What's that song 'The Man Who Built The Moon' is trying to be? It's been on some BBC advert or something... The main melody is on a tin whistle/recorder or something... It's a Hoppipolla/Bittersweet Symphony kinda thing... Ahh fuck.

Absolutely loving the album.
Only thing doing my head in is guitar at the start of Black & White Sunshine = Madonna’s Beautiful Stranger opening riff mixed with opening riff from Crowded House’s Only Natural and then the melody on the chorus bit is basically Stones’ Start Me Up which has already been mentioned.
