How is thinking Noel isn't as good as Lennon, McCartney etc. negativity? I certainly don't hold him in SUCH high regard. No one is going to better those 2 writers - not even in my book either. But looking at the others posts, were Noel is coming way down the list of other writers, and many other posts in other threads recently where he is becoming ridiculed for his latest interview or his latest song release, its easy to forget you are on an Oasis forum.

Greatest songwriter? Greatest guitarist? Greatest...
The fact is, there is no correct answer for those questions.

Just because you're on an Oasis forum doesn't mean you can't be somewhat realistic. I'd put Lennon/McCartney, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, Smokey Robinson, and Prince ahead of him. Noel is in the bracket right below them.

Different songwriters have different means. It's like comparing apples and oranges.
Along with Paul McCartney, I personally think Noel is one of the greatest melodist of all time - personally, in the top five ever. But neither are as lyrically good as, say, Dylan or Springsteen. But then the latter two aren't as good at melodies.
That's a very simplistic take but they all serve different purposes. I have no doubt however that Noel at his peak is part of the elite songwriters. It's still a struggle to come across a songwriter who can write as heartfelt and yearning melodies as him - e.g. Live Forever and Listen Up.
You can whistle those tunes and they sound incredible. Regardless of lyrical content or song structure, they somehow mean a lot more than many other tunes that are evidently more painstaking in their craft.

Must be awkward for Noel that people keep saying this is their favorite song on the album. He must be thinking "What about the time and effort I put into the whole write-in-studio songs!?"

He'll go back to writing songs on his own, away from the studio after this album.

the lineage for me goes Beatles > The Smiths > Oasis note the underlying Irish/Manchester/Liverpool connection. Something in the water there.
And yes- that Italian DJ is hot.

If you consider influence/importance in music, Noel is clearly very far away from Dylan, Lennon and McCartney, Brian Wilson, etc. But for me personally, only 2-3 other songwriters in history have so many songs that connect with me so deeply. For instance, while I acknowledge Dylan's importance, the only albums that really connect to me and that I have been listening to on a regular basis for years are "Blood on the Tracks" and "Blonde on Blonde", and even in the second one I usually skip a few tracks. So I prefer Noel over Dylan even though it would be foolish to say that Noel is "better" than Dylan Yeah while I really appreciate Dylan as a songwriter, he's never really floated my boat. Neil Young is more my thing, even though he spread himself way too thin over the years. Though is it even possible to compare someone like Thom Yorke with Noel? Both living legends in their own right, though both so different, and neither can do what the other does. Then you've got someone like Bowie who basically encapsulates it ALL in way no-one else could or ever can again. Does that make him better than any other British songwriter who ever lived? In some ways YES. Bowie will always beat Lennon for me.

By the way, Noel mentioned he's going to play this one live. Smart move on his part, since it's shaping up to be a favorite among the causal fans. Might juice ticket sales.

It's been mentioned by a few journalists that seemed fond of the "old Noel". That's all.

If this is indeed the great song he's hyped, then it would be idiotic not to record a studio version of it. I remain skeptical.

The IIHAG demo is better than the studio version. And it was the Italian journalist who started hyping the song.

It's all a matter of taste, i rarely listen to live stuff, especially the Gallaghers. i'm a studio geek. If i had a gun is not the best example i gotta say, it's not that great in either form to me. + demos are studio versions right, just a bit raw
