When the Levee Breaks is my favorite Led Zep song, but God Only Knows is simply one of the most beautiful and elegant songs ever written. That harpsichord intro was meant to wring tears from your eyes. And that's to say nothing of Carl Wilson's angelic vocal performance!

God only knows how overrated that track is. Don't get me wrong, it's fine. But nothing more than that. Come to your senses people!

God Only Knows should win this. Until last year or something, I really disliked the Beach Boys (yes, really), but I have always thought God Only Knows is one of the most beautiful popsongs ever written and have loved it ever since I first heard it as a child.
Beautiful backing track, simple, but good lyrics and of course a beautiful vocal performance from the late Carl Wilson.
It has always reminded me of Christmas and family. A very warm song.
I can't for the life of me understand how anyone could hate it or say it's overrated.

i think i will sit out the tiebreaker this time, as i love both tracks and i'm pretty much 50/50, right down the middle. i wouldn't like to think that my one vote could or would knock the other one out.
i am also going to change my voting strategy for round 9, as the nomination process isn't even close to being finished and i already have more than 5 tracks i would like to vote for. so for the first time, in round 9 i will cast a vote for only one track. the one track i think deserves to win, and that i hope wins.

i'm not trying to sway the voting in one direction or the other, but think of the track before it. when it comes to flow, what sound would mix in better behind 'you really got me'... something heavy, bluesy and dirty... that song is 'when the levee breaks'.

I'll keep these results up until tomorrow so people can have a better look at them.
I was pleasantly surprised at Simon & Garfunkel's performance in this one (joint 5th - or rather 3rd if we are to call Coldplay and Sex Pistols joint 2nd) - in amongst the acts with a large following on this forum. Quite right too, it's a quality song.

i'm not trying to sway the voting in one direction or the other, but think of the track before it. when it comes to flow, what sound would mix in better behind 'you really got me'... something heavy, bluesy and dirty... that song is 'when the levee breaks'. I think the 'flow' concept destroyed itself when Eleanor Rigby follows I Wanna Be Adored! About as jarring a contrast in styles as you can get! |

have we ever established parameters as to what happens if a tie break ends in another tie?  Maybe matt hasn't said the rule that says that in this situation, he'll choose the song he likes the most  Haha, as much as I'd love to choose God Only Knows, it would ruin the competition. I'm only polling these suggestions, aside from that, my 'power' is zilch. However, if we were to do this again sometime down the line, it would be cool if somebody else ran it next year instead of myself. The actual music discussion and arguments in this thread has been top quality. And finding out new songs from folks suggestions has also been really cool. And maybe in the future somebody could devise a Spotify playlist for each round to share the track nominations? |

If it is a tie, I think a good idea would be for a 'snapshot' poll - for example, one that lasts just an hour or two for one evening, if people are cool with that?

I've got a Pet Sounds boxset, has about 10 different takes on 'God Only Knows', great song but the album we're making needs some energy....it needs 'When The Levee Breaks'.
This album needs to party, the kinda album you can listen to while drinking an entire bottle of tequila, and once finished with the bottle you still have the energy and wherewithal to bury the hooker you just killed.
