I finished listening to Souvlaki ONCE AGAIN. Such a great collection of music Souvlaki is THE shoegaze album for me. I can understand why Loveless is universally regarded as the quintessential shoegaze record, but personally when I think of shoegaze the first things that spring to mind are the mellow, layered dreamscapes of Machine Gun or the "fuck me - my brain is drowning in a sea of cosmic, melted lasagne" mood of Souvlaki Space Station.

Though shoegaze covers a wide range of styles, in my mind there's a shoegaze intensity spectrum from most aggressive and influenced by noise pop bands like The Jesus and Mary Chain, to lighter and more ethereal groups more influenced by Cocteau Twins dream pop. MBV would be on the heavier side (of course) and Slowdive near the softer side, with Ride somewhere in the middle.

Messing around with multitracks once again, but this time did something different and cool Tested out a Quadraverb effect in Audacity and think it came out great. Basically the guitar part is driven through a chain of short phased paulstretch > heavy pre-delay wet reverb (twice) and a slight pitch increase. https%3A//soundcloud.com/starsailor96/quadraverb-effect-testcarlober would like to know your thoughts on this one! Have you attempted it yourself with your guitar?

Those two are brilliant, glider! Great stuff. The Quadraverb emulation sounds really amazing, stunning work man. When I'm in the mood I love to set a thick full wet reverb + just a touch of pitch shifting and randomly play some chords, just letting the soundscape grow. I really like the second one too. Feels like something out of an Alien movie, very haunting.

Sounds to me like a sunrise on a distant planet. Thanks! It was just me messing around with the guitar and my favorite reverbs, as usual IIRC it's a single guitar track going through two reverbs stacked one after the other: the first one is set on 100% wet with a very long decay time and some modulation, it's the kind of cathedral-like huge hall which I love. The second one takes a bit longer to build and includes some pitch shifting. And then I added the rain/thunder samples because they kinda fit the mood. https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/307284222

Extended WTSRTS intro. Loved it too much not to try something with it.

The question of the week at my local library is "what is your favorite song of the 90's?" Visitors are invited to write down responses on a whiteboard. Amid usual suspects (Smells Like Teen Spirit, Karma Police, All Star) and cultural anachronisms (Purple Rain) was, to my absolute shock, When the Sun Hits by Slowdive!!! Yeah, you read that right! It blows my mind how Slowdive have leapt miraculously from being one of the 90's greatest underdogs to being widely known and recognized by the mainstream. And that's all down to that fantastic legacy left in modern groups like Beach House, Alvvays, and The xx, as well as their stellar comeback album. Hell, I even saw their latest in the music section of transcontinental in-flight entertainment two months ago, alongside Reflektor, They Want My Soul, and other flagship albums of the 10's. I am so happy that they've gone from being the punching bag of the music press to being vindicated by history and getting the acclaim they deserve.

I've listened to so many nu-gaze bands. Almost all of them are so freaking bland. They make me wanna listen to Ride or Lush instead. DIIV is the only exception. (Althought Wolf Alice and Alvvays have some shoegaze/dream pop ifluences too).

This new track released today by Adult Swim is the result of a collaboration between Kevin Shields from My Bloody Valentine and Brian Eno. And it does sound precisely like Kevin Shields collaborating with Brian Eno A nine-minutes long ambient piece full of hazy, distorted and drony guitars. https%3A//api.soundcloud.com/tracks/348230558

Gave Isn't Anything a spin earlier today. Fantastic album. Even if it's not quite the masterpiece that Loveless is, it's still great, and it stands in direct contrast to its successor because it's clearly the work of a band rather than the deranged vision of only one man. Plus, it's got more variation than Loveless.

I'll believe it when the files are on my computer and I've heard the last note of the last track evaporate through my earphones
