Can you outgrow bands? "Are there any bands, musicians, genres, etc. that you have outgrown? Something that you loved as an adolescent, but have since "matured" and moved on to more "grown up" music? " Can you think of any bands ,that you once even considered to be quite mature but later let you down (like Kasabian)? I think they are not your typicall sell-outs.

I outgrew heavy metal for all but a few bands in one day when I was about 19. It was weird, but for no apparent cause I literally woke up that morning knowing I was just into indie/alternative/electronica/etc from there on out and would never like that music again. So I boxed up all my metal CDs and sold them at the record store. Never regretted it.
And one of the metal bands I did hold onto for a while was AC/DC, until MTV or VH1 were doing some show on the fans of bands and they were on there. Some of the people they showed were pretty cool, but then they showed families that were into them. I mean I always knew it was crap, but I needed to at least think it was mostly bikers and punks who liked them. Once they were fun for the whole family I just wanted stuff I could take more seriously.

I've outgrown most of the stuff from the teenage years, I'd say. I'm pretty sure the only bands from my teens I still care for are Yellowcard and Oasis and those are my top two bands (both with shitty live vocalists hah!). My most notable outgrown band is probably 30 Seconds To Mars, though I don't think it's really about me getting older or anything, just the declining quality and the whole cult-iness of the fanbase. I also listened to a lot of "emo" bands like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy, lot of screamo bands and shit. I use quotation marks on emo because back then emo was usually anything that wasn't hip hop or pop. I also enjoyed british boybands like McFly and Busted but that got boring pretty fast. I quickly hopped onto the german boyband train so the notorious Tokio Hotel was plastered all over my walls. When I discovered the world of japanese comics and animation, I started listening to a bunch of japanese music of varying genres, but stuck to only one band to this day. I outgrow something every few years really, currently I'm in the process of outgrowing Korean boybands and girlgroups.

I'm not sure if I've outgrown Nirvana, as I still can see it as great music, but it is the one band I loved in my youth that does not mean as much to me now, emotionally, as the others.
30 Seconds to Mars have just become horribly boring, IMO. That's one band that surely went downhill with becoming successfull. But I still adore their first record.

When I was a teen I was an emo kid. Or "goth-light" as my mom would call it. So yeah, Three Days Grace, Rise Against etc. Those were my kind of bands.
I didn't listen to just emo-rock of course, but I've definitely outgrown these bands.
Not too mention the clothes and awful make up. Amy Winehouse was nothing.
Fortunately it didn't last long.

Keane.
I still like a lot of their songs and still own four of their records, but I feel that they weren't as good as I thought. They were one of the first bands I ever got into, and now that I've explored their influences, they don't sound so original anymore. However, the songs always bring me back to years ago when I was first getting into music, so I'll always appreciate them for nostalgic reasons.

Very interesting topic and good to read people's responses.
I think the music we love most follows us through life and takes on new meanings as we enter new stages. I find this with all my favourites, including and especially Oasis.
I don't know if I can say I've outgrown any band but I have lost interest. For example, the Stereophonics were spectacular, loved their first 4 albums, after that I just couldn't be bothered. I still enjoy those first 4 and I'd definitely see them live if they came by but the impetus to hear their latest or their bsides(which were very good!) seems to be gone.

Can you outgrow bands? Uh, yes. Way back when I was 10 I bought Kiss Alive. Kind of liked it for a few days but after around a week I realized just how stupid and childish Kiss were. I outgrew them when I was 10! 40 years later they're pushing 70 and still doing it. Talk about arrested development.
On the other hand I still kind of like The Sweet. There's no rational justification for that other than there must still be a part of me that's 10 and stupid, just not as stupid as Kiss. Good thread idea by the way.

Kasabian.
I was following them since 2004, have seen them 9 times in different countries and met them in person several times, but these days they bore me.

Most of the artists that grew in popularity during my high school days...
Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, POD, Third Eye Blind, Buck Cherry, The Verve Pipe, Barenaked Ladies, etc.
On occasion I'll wander back down the road of listening and it's always enjoyable in a nostalgic way, but I can't say that I care about what they might be up to now.

Think a fair bit of sample based music of late 90s and early 2000s i used to like has dated really badly. Still like some my old jungle and old drum and bass mind you.

I've noticed in particular some early Oasis classics mean less to me than some of Noel's later mature wistful songs. I'm in my 30's now so stuff like living forever, being supersonic or a rock n roll star mean sweet fuck all to me.
I really should never have got stuck into cigs and alcohol to boot! Oasis songs like Gas Panic, Sunday Morning Call, Idlers Dream among many others mean more to me than the youth anthems.
