The only thing I really really like from the new U2 material is The Little Things That Give You Away.
The rest I'm not getting any sense of anticipation. It's U2 on autopilot. All we heard in the years 2009-2014 was about a band trying to stay relevant or reinvent themselves again. So it's all the more remarkable and disappointing for a band that were so keen on exploring new territory back in the day that this new stuff, for them, is unbelievably tame.
I like some of these songs, I honestly do, but as a hardcore fan, the sense of occasion should be much greater and more ambitious.
And that's not really good enough for a band of their stature. Especially for one that recorded The Unforgettable Fire in just under three months.

Do you ever get the feeling sometimes that a song was so obviously stitched together from various fragments, to the point that you can see the seams come apart before your eyes? That's exactly how I feel about American Soul. And that's not because it reuses bits from XXX (a great song) and Volcano (a terrible song), but that certainly doesn't help. And that's before I talk about how painfully generic the song is, from the riff, to the chorus, to literally everything. Christ, this band has lost its way.

American Soul is garbage. It's supposed to be a companion piece to Volcano but it just doesn't work, it's too rock-ish. I wish this song would've been more like the sample used on XXX (jazzy hip hop, 90s U2-like, laidback vibes). |

Giving this album a first play through. Perhaps not as bad I expected. A few songs like American Soul with bits of SOI in them. Decent on first listen though. The Little Things album version is great thankfully.

The very last song 13(There is a light) has a great verse which you think could be a great song then it has the Song For Someone chorus pretty much 😣 "Love is Bigger" is pretty good a kind of ATYCLB anthem. |

that song Love is Bigger...is classic u2 anthem. very poppy but nice melody.
will likely be closing their concerts.
