The Best Thing really is dire. Hopefully there'll be some really decent stuff on the album but it's low on my list of musical "excitement" atm.

I'm by no means a big U2 fan, but after hearing a few clips of music and their spot on DAMN, I did have a slight spark of hope for their next album. That spark has been stabbed, raped, murdered, and spat up upon by The Best Thing.

Thought Blackout was going to be the opener? I can see this being very similar quality to Songs of Innocence, whether that's a good or bad thing is entirely up to you.
I think that album is decent, but that's all it is. The pop songs are U2 on autopilot and sound more like them trying to be Coldplay - and not classic Coldplay either. Aside from a few examples, they are NOT a pop band and cannot write pop songs, so Bono and co should stop thinking that way. Only when they're serious and earnest does the quality shine through. An extremely bland first half, made up somewhat with a decent second half.
They're certainly not Noel Gallagher that's for sure - Holy Mountain proved once again his credentials for fun and joyous songs. It seems effortless, whereas songs like The Best Thing really do seem desperate to capture the young folk.
P.S. 'Wanna feel old' as the meme goes? Well Larry turned 56 today.

'Get Out Of Your Own Way' is available on Spotify right now. It sounds very U2 by numbers but I don't mind it.
The studio version of 'The Blackout' is on there too.

Curious to see that this video alone heavily inspired that 90's U2 aggressively modern visual style:

Just listened to The Blackout on Spotify. Much much better. Two bad songs, and two good songs heard, but nothing to get excited about unfortunately.

U2 are still a band? I thought they all died in a freak accident sometime after 2000.

Anyone heard American Soul yet? Heard it on mp3 yesterday.
An intro by Kendrick Lamar (seguing from Get Out Your Own Way) and is a stomping rock song. It's a rockier version of the segment they did with Kendrick Lamar on DAMN, but strangely, features the middle 8 from Volcano as the chorus ('you are rock n roll').

American Soul is bizzare, it's "Glastonbury" and "Volcano" mixed together. Really strange to use these songs again and pretty bad.

When you have almost 40 years career you don't need to go stale like U2, Simple Minds released a very good album some years ago with Big Music, a bold work with some eletronica influences, it sounds glorious and very conteporary, U2 could learn a bit from them.

U2 could borrow a bit more from them.

Bono owns shares in a Lithuanian shopping centre? I really do give up. Everything in the news these days is honestly like a Brasseye parody now.

The elite doesn't take an off day on practicing hypocrisy. Stuff like this should be no suprise.
