I started giggling when I heard The Edge trying to rip off Disco Inferno in the verses. Disco Inferno? Is that this song that David Brent was grunting away to?! I knew I wasn't the first one making that observation ^^ But now all that someone has to do is to put Bono's head on top of Ricky's, and then it's all complete!

Yep. The very last song 13(There is a light) has a great verse which you think could be a great song then it has the Song For Someone chorus pretty much 😣 "Love is Bigger" is pretty good a kind of ATYCLB anthem. The leak files I have suck. Sounds like it was recorded from playing from laptop speakers or some shit.

No urge at all to listen to the leak, not even tempted due to the largely forgettable string of releases so far. Noel’s keeping me preoccupied and will do so until the end of the year in all honesty, just had Who Built The Moon turned up LOUD in my flat and it sounds truly epic - never thought we’d see the day where Noel pushes the boat out further and is more adventurous than U2, but here we are.
That said, my U2 fandom has extended as far as reading people’s reactions to the new album. I hear it is more ‘intimate’ than expected, which is encouraging as I’m really sick fed up with the hollow bombast of recent songs.

They are the worst tracks! By far. Really? D'you reckon it's worth listening to? Yep, definitely. Some dodgy tracks on there but some really good stuff. Surprised me as my expectations were zero. The singles are by far the worst tracks.

I will try to squeeze this in on my drive to and from work in the morning. Might be hard. I've been blasting Who Built The Moon? nonstop since leak day.

The singles are by far the worst tracks. I’ve heard folk saying the songs we’ve heard are the worst but I always take that with a pinch of salt (heck I remember when folk said Shock of the Lightning was only the sixth best song on Dig Out Your Soul - aside from Falling Down, I presume the other five are in the vaults...). I pray to god it is because I was (or still am) seriously bracing myself for the worst U2 album ever by far after hearing them. Is it more intimate than expected though? Apparently Bono’s brush with death last year (whatever it was but I’d say health scare considering he’s aged considerably in the last couple of years) starkly influences the lyrics?

Not sure it's more intimate. Don't get me wrong, it's not the Joshua Tree or anywhere near it but it's not a total wipeout, there's some decent stuff. The singles are the worst but the production on "Little Things" is superb and it's a great song. They should still call it a day though, sad to see them producing stuff like American Soul and the singles.

American Soul is garbage. It sounds like it belongs in a movie that failed to secure a U2 license and settled on a soundalike. "Write something that sounds like U2. You know what I mean". It's not BAD really, but it's almost aggressively generic.

question: can U2 survive another lackluster, uninspired, generic-sounding album?
the answer is yes, of course, because they have a larger-than-life fanbase that will follow them and will remain onboard no matter what.
but the last time i saw them play live (on the joshua tree tour), hearing the newer material played alongside the older stuff.... the contrast was shocking.

I was able to listen to the studio version of The Little Things and a few other songs. That song in its studio form is so good. I'd honestly go as far to say that it's a masterpiece and one of the best post-Pop U2 songs. The song still maintains an element of doubt and self-reflection that the live version does, but there is more guitar on the studio version which fills some of the space that the live version of the song had. I think that song will end up being a mainstay in some form in the live shows. I wish it was closing the album, but I understand its place on SOE.
Landlady is a nice song to have follow The Little Things. It's a reflection on what I can imagine were harder times for Bono and the people who helped him along the way. It has a nice, delicate arrangement that seems very personal and intimate and fits the lyrical theme well. Not the strongest song, but still a good song.
Lights of Home is probably the other favorite of mine, alongside The Little Things. The song is a little bit like Cedarwood Road in that it has a gritty acoustic guitar riff in it but there's a lush piano chorus that has a nice, warm feeling to it. The solo on this song is also fantastic and the turn the song takes towards the end where it turns into almost a gospel-meets-Hey Jude kind of outro that doesn't feel forced and doesn't go on for longer than it needs to. I like the lyrics, as well. They really fit the "write like you're dead" theme of SOE.
American Soul, Get Out of Your Own Way, and You're the Best Thing About Me are definitely the weakest tracks on the album.

Is it weird that I’m kinda digging this album? Miles better than bloated Atomic Bomb, Horizon and Innocence.
