Received the 5cd/dvd-set in the mail yesterday - I couldn't resist ordering since I had bought the previous ones too and obviously they had been fantastic in every aspect. Anyway, had a listen to the b-sides disc today and they were nowhere near as strong as I remembered them. Lots of directionless and stereotype RA numbers, already foreshadowing his absolutely subpar solo output.
Those leaked songs in contrast are a great listen. Great soundscapes by Nick McCabe, somehow I can't believe we're getting new Verve songs recorded in the nineties. Just like with the recent OK Computer rerelease! Would have loved a proper Verve outtake of Song for the Lovers featuring Nick McCabe, rescuing a great song from its MOR sound mediocrity. After all, at least in my book, he's mainly responsible for The Verve's success and what really distinguishes their sound from others.
I've been checking the Northern Souls forum occasionally for a while and there's probably only Billy Corgan who receives more internet hate for revisionist behaviour and destroying the legacy of his old band than Ashcroft. Deserved.

Took me a while but for those with the Boxset ripped, I re-structured it from CD2-CD5. CD3-CD5 is poorly organized between live versions because of the exclusion of the unreleased studio sessions, so now that we have them I'm able to turn CD5 into a proper version, Haigh Hall in full on CD4, and all the other live selections on CD3. They also named the files badly, which I corrected. CD1 (Same but with added Track 14 'Deep Freeze', spliced from 'Come On') CD2 CD3 CD4 CD5

Has Richard done any interview for this project? I've read a bunch of Nick but I want to hear Richard's perspective too. He was the frontman and main driving force after all.

Richard may had been the face of the band, but he was absolutely not the driving force. And no, he hasn't done interviews. He wants nothing to do with the band and constantly tries to revise history by stating UH is his solo breakthrough, yet he peaked writing wise on it.

If that is what he is gonna hang his hat on as his first "solo" album, what followed has been extremely mixed and lower quality.

He promotes gigs with the tagline "playing all your favorite Verve songs" aka solo career is a bust, come hear me play Sonnet and Drugs Don't Work for the millionth time with terrible guitar riffs! Last great song he penned was Sit and Wonder for Forth as far as I'm concerned. Richard on his own (no pun intended) shows how he wasn't the driving force behind the Verve whatsoever.

And Sit and Wonder was written by the band I believe, so it's not even Ashcroft's. Yep, he's a one trick pony still depending on 20 year old songs and his guitar playing is that bland and uninspired that if he was performing an acoustic version of The Drugs Don't Work in my back garden I'd shut the curtains.

My bad, Love Is Noise and App Springs was the ones he's credited for it on the album so I assumed that, but basically he's always wrapped lyrics around the grooves the rest of the band comes up with.

I've read on the Northern Souls forum that a high quality rip of said outtakes disc is doing the rounds. Anyone able to point me into the right direction?

Got them now Original credit goes to Jim for putting me onto this link These are tracks which were supposed to have been released on the recent Urban Hymns reissue but unfortunately after the band approved them for release Richard Ashcroft then vetoed them all. Nick McCabe showed a picture of the cd-r online. They were then leaked by an unknown source this week, you can make up your own mind of who that may have been!! Listen to them all at the YouTube channel below. m.youtube.com/channel/UCXtHZHonJdLgib8Uzl9UvDA

I saw the big UH box set at my local record chain store ($79.99), didn't expect to see it at all - which is why I didn't expect to be tempted!
the main thing I want is the Haigh Hall gig and the Verve video 96-98 so I may as well consider it. The other live tracks I'm sure will be superb.

Figured this is a good place to post these seeing as it is Verve related. Sympathy For The Demos : The Urban Hymns Sessions (Expanded Edition) Bitter Sweet Symphony Sonnet The Drugs Don't Work Space and Time Song For The Lovers One Before Dinner Misty Morning June Lord, I've Been Trying Jerusalem The Drugs Don't Work (Longer) Come On People The Crab A Little Bit Of Love Lord, I Guess I'll Never Know Monte Carlo Oh Sister New York (Siren Mix) One More For The Lovers It Takes Two Brave New World Lucky Man Into Neon Wilderness (Nick McCabe Instrumental) The Drugs Don't Work (Acoustic, First Vocal Take) Come On People (Live Rehearsal, Real World Studios) Song For The Lovers (Vocal Track Recording) Space In Time (Live Rehearsal, Real World Studios) The Drugs Don't Work (Early Mix, Real World Studios) Download - www.sendspace.com/file/dxleetAfter the Urban Hymns reissue came out and the leaked session tracks were uploaded I was reading up on a Verve forum about the recording process. One guy was talking about how Nick McCabe came back in and basically rescued the album. An instrumental guitar loop of Lucky Man into Neon Wilderness which was uploaded to McCabe's Myspace back in the day got mentioned so thought I'd track it down along with a demo of Brave New World from Ashcroft's first album which seems to be agreed to have been recorded at the Urban Hymn sessions so I have included both, YouTube rips only though I'm afraid, along with rest of the available demos. A Northern Soul Rough Mixes and Demos A New Decade So It Goes Come On On Your Own A Northern Soul Stormy Clouds Life's An Ocean Drive You Home History Country Song Download - www.sendspace.com/file/s0myzp--------------------------------------------------- I'm hoping someone can help me out with this track : Bitter Sweet Symphony (James Lavelle Instrumental Remix) It isn't available to buy via iTunes etc but if it can't be shared on the forum due to rules no worries, can maybe sort something out away from here.
