That's like the most disappointing reissue ever. I'm not wasting my money on this, sorry.

We all know why Richard vetoed these songs. No doubt they would show his solo albums to be the shit that they are. Apparently all of the songs on this disc have leaked, but I haven't been able to find them.

This is the kind of stuff we were looking for! Richard tried claiming he wrote the song and didn't want it including, although Nick says it was written by the band, in the traditional Verve style that himself, Si and Pete put down the music and Richard came over the top with the lyrics, as it used to be before Ashcroft picked up an acoustic guitar. The real reason is probably that Richard didn't want to include anything that might distract from his warped notion that Urban Hymns is his solo record and that The Verve were backing musicians. Nick said it best when he wrote on FB: "Richard doesn't want it releasing, because he knows how good it is"

Man, I hope we'll get those tracks eventually! All Ways are Maybes sounds very good!
That CD should have been CD3 of the deluxe edition. Who gives a fuck about some random live performances when you have 11 unreleased tracks?

Wednesday Madness is another brilliant tune. The whole disc is really, even that track Oh Sister, which was recorded prior to Nick re-joining them is pretty damn good. I quite like the 5th disc of the reissue with the live tracks, that version of A Northern Soul is probably the best I've heard, and A Man Called Sun, History at Brixton and Slide Away in Manchester are phenomenal too. But there should have definitely been room for these unreleased songs too.

Oh well. Once on the internet, always on the internet, so I hope it's just a matter of time before they're available nearly everywhere

More to come I assume Anyways, Nick and Si (Simon Jones) did multiple interviews promoting the reissue, talking about the album and going track by track. Here's the one they did with Radio X, great listen for fans and very refreshing after hearing one side of the story for years. https%3A//soundcloud.com/hewhohears/radio-xsoundcloud.com/hewhohears/radio-xNick did an interview for Drowned in Sound where he sets the record straight on the actual recording process of Urban Hymns, and goes into details about the breakup in '98 and the events that lead to the final demise during and after the Forth sessions. Also discusses Black Submarine and future projects! Urban Hymns at 20: DiS Meets Nick McCabedrownedinsound.com/in_depth/4151276-urban-hymns-at-20--dis-meets-nick-mccabe

While I'm glad to finally hear these lost gems (and trust me, they're glorious), it's still hard to listen to them without a sense of sadness. We could've genuinely heard these and had a build up of excitement if it was on the Urban Hymns reissue, and when they finally would be released, there would be nothing but an overjoyed listening experience. Richard tampered with that experience and really gave a big f you to the fans for vetoing the unreleased studio sessions. It is what it is.
Just to further add, I was really excited to hear the studio version of South Pacific, and it was officially released with a video of the band at Sawmills, which was great to see for the band members and fans, plus the studio version is amazing. We could've had footage of them at Olympic/Metropolis (can't remember which studio) which some of these tunes as music videos.

Yeah, the songs were going to be in this, remastered and ready to go, Richard just said no for whatever reason. No way he's using tracks like this on a future solo record. Combing the web as we speak, obviously can't post here but still looking.

These songs should be there as part of Verve's legacy available for fans to buy. Not confined to being a bootleg. I just hope Richard doesn't play silly beggars with the Forth outttakes. I believe a reissue might be in the pipeline next year for its 10th year anniversary and there's apparently some really good stuff that's never seen the light of day. Shit, just to get a high bitrate, lossless version of Blue Pacific Ocean will make it worth it. That is, if Ashcroft allows it

There is indeed one big problem with these 3 unreleased tracks: they sound like the work of a whole band, not just Richard Ashcroft-penned tracks.
Richard's ego sabotaged this reissue.
