It's common opinion that the album tracks released so far from Council Skies suffer from "poor mixing" - for want of a better phrase: they sound flat, crammed, with vocals that at times can't really cut through the instrumentation. They lack spaciousness. I've found a long and techy interview with Callum Marinho, who is the sound engineer at Noel's Lone Star Sound Studios. In it, around the 29min mark, he gives an interesting insight: So it's definitely a deliberate choice. Noel likes it like that

Nice find, tbh I was quite upset about this like the first 2 days after Easy Now and Council Skies were released ( for some reason It does not happen with Pretty Boy), but now I am totally used to it Pretty Boy sounds a lot better than the other songs, maybe because there's less stuff going on in the track. And that '80s drum machine has more life in it than those dull drums on OTDSWYF.

Problem with Noel is he isn't putting in the same kind of effort as Liam, who has the spirit of Oasis in his hands. Noel also feels more impersonal and colder than Liam. To top it off, Noel's release strategy is terrible. Pretty Boy was technically the first single but it came out like a song you'd get between album cycles to tie everyone over. Then, Easy Now and album details came out and generated a lot of buzz but where has that gone? It's been 4.5 months since all of that, plus we've gotten 40% of the album with the two singles since then. At least with Liam's stuff, it was album announcement in Oct. 2021, build the hype and buzz, first single in February, second and third singles in April and a single the day before its release and some big shows right after that. They're not relevant in the US period, it's not a matter of trying, Liam's not even toured there because the revenue is not worth the costs If you're Noel you either find a bigger act to tour with (and maybe Garbage wasn't the best choice, but then it's also a matter of logistics), play even smaller venues (and it may still cost a fortune) or give up the idea of touring there, which doesn't seem to be an option because he loves doing it so at least he's still making the few fans across the country who are willing to show up happy Liam toured with Richard in 2018 over here but that's the only recent gigs. They were extremely small indoor venues essentially. I'd also argue that the luster Noel's solo career had in its earlier days is long gone, as the main pull to his gigs was always to relive the Oasis songs live, with one of the most important members of the band playing them. This benefitted him greatly because back then when Beady Eye was still around, they refused to play any Oasis tracks live until 2014, and by that point they were done as a band. Noel was the only true access for fans to get their Oasis fix live post-2009, until Liam came through in 2017 and shook up the playing field. Liam fully dominates the post-Oasis live experience now and as much as Noel was crucial to those songs, everyone wants to hear Liam sing them, and not only is he doing that, he's singing them well. Noel's in a rock and a hard place now, as the luxury of being the sole act post-Oasis that could bring the anthems back is no longer there.

The stupidest lyrics Noel has ever written: 1. Evil Flower. Literally all of it. 2. Nature is dancing / and it makes me sweat 3. I believe in magical
I've actually ended up liking Council Skies a lot, but oof I wince at that line every single time. I'm trying to learn to just not hear it.

I love this album. I like his experimental ventures. But others do it better. Nobody does Noel stuff better than The Chief himself.
And my first HFB gig is in August.
Feel so fortunate.

So is 'We're Gonna Get There in the End' a 'Dead in the Water' sorta deal, where it's technically not on the album, but kind of is too?
As good as 'Think of a Number' is, I think I'm gonna count 'We're Gonna Get There in the End' as the last track. It deserves a spot on the album, just like 'Dead in the Water' did on Who Built the Moon?.

Part of me wishes for Noel not to get to number one. It seems to be one of the main motivations for his management and himself to simply 'get a number one' when it serves no purpose for anyone. It also seems to constrain the release times and, artistically, may prompt Noel into being too safe musically. Not to mention top heavy sales that will drop off a cliff the following week. Living in the past as always and ultimately means nothing for nobody. I wish Noel would commit commercial suicide by releasing something like Metal Machine Music by Lou Reed and get that monkey off his back. I'm not sure Noel thinks like that. He's been releasing albums for 30 years now and musically it's not like he's ever been progressive I think he just releases the best album out of the collection of songs he has at the time, I think that's about as deep as it gets. It's just it always got to number 1 either because it was great, or because he's got a huge following. It just so happens this time he's releasing one on the same day as a bigger act. I don't think coming in at number 2 is gonna change anything he does in future. Noel has a pretty narrow comfort zone as a musician, he's occasionally experimented with a few other influences but it's still very much within the constraints of a pretty safe pop-rock field. His next album will too.

A scary thought that's just hit me. By the time the next album cycle comes round, Noel will be 60. Fucking 60. Mental.

I'm hoping Noel plays more songs on tour. The setlist his first 2 shows was pretty unforgettable imo
