Alan's drumming!
It's too fucking fancy.
All those fucking half beats and shit.
I prefer thundersticks McCarroll on DM.
THANKFULLY Alan didn't fuck up on BHN!!

You hate Morning Glory? Oh dear.... No way, I just don't like it as much as BHN and I've been trying to pinpoint why. This is probably the main reason, I'm fucking super picky about drums on records and he sounds like he's drumming on a reggae record on WTSMG. Tony's punk drumming any day! I think someone told him cos on BHN he sounds a LOT better.

Alan's drumming made WTSMG? Most of the songs would be substantially worse with Tony drumming, because it was a more mature, softer album. Tony could do the rock songs, but the more acoustic songs(Wonderwall, DLBIA, CNS, Champagne Supernova, She's Electric) worked so well with Alan's style...

I've never heard of a drumming style referred to as "fancy".

Alan White learnt drums primarily from his older brother Steve, who drummed for Paul Weller for nearly 25 years and is a big jazz fan. I have a copy of rhythm magazine somewhere where Alan talks about his brother being a great teacher but his influences were more funk and soul drummers, hence half beats and breaks, etc. in his style. It also made him through experience and practice a very versatile performer who could turn his hand to most percussive styles. Both the great thing but later problem with Tony McCarroll is he was an untrained drummer with a Moe Tucker (Velvet Underground) style- alot of tom toms, cymbal crashes every four bars, etc. That worked great on straight forward hard rock songs in B as they mostly were on Definitely Maybe, but can you really imagine that sort of drumming working on Cast No Shadow, Wonderwall or even Don't Look Back In Anger? Alan White was actually supposed to rerecord Some Might Say's drum tracks for the album but it didn't happen because a) because the single was already out with Tony's drumming, and b) The legendary studio fight and six week gap left them with enough to do with recording the songs still to go on the album. Tony McCarroll left Oasis for legal and personal issues that we have dscussed before, but I think there is some truth in Owen Morris and Mark Coyle's separate assessments that he may have had to go anyway, simply because his ability and style was too limited to play anything more complex than what he had achieved on Definitely Maybe. It may have been harsh on him to some extent, but then I will leave it to Mani from the '04 DVD to some it up best:- (it plays from 38.33 not the start )

I've never heard of a drumming style referred to as "fancy". Try Buddy Rich my good woman, his style was quite "fancy" in it's day

As much as I dislike the guy personality wise there is an example of some TOP drumming! And the melody & bass ain't too shabby either.

WTSMG would've lacked something without Alan's drumming. Tony is alright, but this album didn't ask for loud banging in one style. Songs such as Wonderwall and DLBIA are definitely songs where the drumming shines through.

His drumming is one of the positives of the album. Obv. down to personal preferences, I like Alans drumming on BHN, its either different or all that fancy shit is drowned out by Noels Wayne's world guitars !

Should have got someone in a similar style though, like guigsysEstring said earlier Alan drums in a quasi jazz style and for me doesn't fit right on WTSMG.

I liked alans drumming, must say though that his brother was pretty awesome though, Im sure he wouldnt of joined oasis because of obvious reasons but I wouldve much preferred him over zak starkey (gave oasis a dave sardy tone in the live setting)
listen to that at 1:54
(side note, what a vocal by Liam)

I'm glad that Alan didn't rerecord Some Might Say. I wish he had. Then Noel and Owen wouldn't've had to compress the fuck out of the mix, and we might have got to hear more of that gorgeous, typically 'Oasis' rhythm guitar that gets lost on the final record:

They never got it right live imo. (Live by the Sea is the best live version imo, with Tony on drums)

I don't really like Alan's drumming on the album by itself, but it's exactly what the album needed, and it would be way worse with any other drummer.
Alan's drums MAKE Wonderwall

The only thing I don't like about Morning Glory is that Alan is on it. Alan did a good job on all the songs, but I don't like that they fired Tony.
