It's usually men in their 40s with mod haircuts and bucket hats (not in this case of course) who like to claim Noel Gallagher is a "sellout" The thing is, he likes Coldplay and he and Chris have alwaya been friends, so it's not like he jumped on the bandwagon for a bit of popularity, he's just appearing on the album of a band he LIKES This. Noel has always been a big fan of Coldplay, going way back to the turn of the millennium. He's an unashamed pop fan too - he loves ABBA and Tears For Fears, so why this is a surprise to folk I have no idea. Let's be honest, he wouldn't be the great songwriter he is if he didn't have a more open minded approach to music than his former band members. He's not overawed by cheap talentless fads like Catfish for example and takes music purely on its own merits. And plenty of Coldplay fans here can vouch for their songwriting and melodic talents, so yeah, this should not be a problem for most folk. The underlying rule as always, as Noel shouts at Liam in Wibbling Rivalry, "It's the MUSIC!".

Yeah Noel as a great POP songwriter himself is a sucker for a good pop tune and Coldplay are pretty great at writing those He's been praising Chris songwriting abilities for ages (and funnily enough Bono has always said he and The Edge kind of passed the torch to Noel in the 90s and Chris is carrying it now) and has been quoted many times saying Yellow's the song he wishes he had written,so I can't see how this is a matter of "selling out" Noel's not supposed to like what WE like

I think that Noel is more a big friend with Chris than a big Coldplay fan.

I think that Noel is more a big friend with Chris than a big Coldplay fan. Mmh not sure,he seems to genuinely love the first two records (as we all do),especially Parachutes

In the esquire interview he bemoans the current bands as they aren't interesting .. obv their music are all hitting accords with people but his seems to disrespect them personally for not being rock n roll .. even tho to noel its all about the music allegedly.. i can't see how coldplay are any more interesting than AM etc but lots like their music output. i dont see royal blood pretending they are rock n roll and but maybe noel would like them more if they had a drug habit?

I guess what Noel wants are some charismatic guys with character and the music to back it up (Royal Blood have it in my opinion,Noel doesn't see it the same way apparently),the drug habit thing was to extremize things I believe Then we might argue that Chris Martin, despite being a pretty funny guy actually,is far from the more charismatic guy in the industry right now...but Noel likes him and gets on well with him,so what do I know

That's a good point and I kind of agree with you I guess Noel's argument is that if you are an interesting and "big" character but you're music's shit you can go fuck yourself, while nowadays we're missing some big personalities like you know,Lennon,Keef,Morrissey,Noel and Liam,Cobain etc. because musicians are scared of what the people and medias say and think of them And what he thinks it's that it's important to have both things, even if the music's still what counts the most

Different and interview defo not as funny as noel and most front men not as cool as liam but others will see them same in their eyes. lets be honest you just name checked nearly 60 years of music and 2 in the same band .. the 'movement' band/ personality will happen but been lots of huge bands/acts in that time frame but those 'legend / characters' are 'meant' to be far and between that what makes them special

More than vocals, backing vocals, or vocal harmonies, I hope that Noel plays a proper guitar solo on this record to remind Coldplay what the definition of "rock" is.

Has anyone actually listened to the track yet? I think he plays a guitar solo? I guess it can't be that amazing. Would he show up at the Superbowl half-time show to play it with Coldplay?

It's called Up&Up and it's definitely one of the strongest songs on the album. Admittedly, that doesn't say much, but it's good. Half time thing definitely isn't happening though.
