Still a lackluster and totally uninspired song, but it's nice to see that Hymn for the Weekend almost becomes listenable if you strip away all the shit (and Beyoncé). It keeps reminding me of some subpar X-Factor auditions though. I hate that he changed up the chord progression when the one used for the album version is actually kind of good but yea, it still sounds uninspired and bleh. One argument I have for the album version is that the piano, percussion with cups, and brass section mix things up. That chorus, however, is a case of a turd that can't be polished.

Somebody give Coldplay their balls back. Jonny and Guy need to ditch asap. They seem like the two that still haven't lost their minds and just playing a role like Gem and Andy.

This guy has completely lost the plot. On Zane Lowe today................
"We’re comfortable with being who we are at the moment,” Martin told Lowe. “I think when we let go of the idea we had to try and win everyone over I think that was really liberating.”
New flash Christopher. You DO CARE what people think of the band and you. Coldplay's music has been so watered down since 2008. It's generic pop wallpaper at this point.

You nailed it. They have fallen into the same trap as U2 did between 2000 and 2016. That band is trying to be loved by literally everyone and get critical accolades. It doesn't work that way and desperately chasing it down in your 50s is pathetic. All bands have peaks and falls. Unless you are like the Beatles or Zeppelin.

Coldplay have released a new stripped-back single mix of Everglow, basically just Chris+piano.
Can't say it's awful because it's not, but it's got a super-cheesy Muhammad Ali quote about god and peace at the end which not only sounds totally out of place, but also makes the whole track sound like if it was especially crafted to make an average housewife cry (no offense to housewives of course).
It feels so fake and forced, as is too often the case with Coldplay nowadays.

Least his vocals are better on this version.

Still incredibly sappy and contains uninspired lyrics. The Ali snippet at the end reminded me of the Lennon quote slap on from I'm Outta Time. Pointless.

If this was an attempt by Chris to show his once-fans that when you take away Stargate's sickly sweet polish, you still have a good song, he's failed.

The album version of Everglow is IMO one of the very few tracks where the candypop StarGate production kinda works, only to a certain extent of course. Its main problem is that it's not a very good song, and the stripped-back arrangement clearly shows it. It's sickly sweet and completely unoriginal. " This particular diamond was extra special..." oh for fuck's sake Chris!

Chris Martin is the geek who for years kept to himself until he finally got noticed for his accomplishments and started trying to hard to fit in, in which he began to lose the very thing that made him get noticed.

two things I dont like about everglow is chris' vocals on the album version, just very weak and unpolished and the lyric
"and though you might be gone, and the world may not know still I see you, celestial"
it just doesnt flow that well, everytime I hear it Im expecting him to say "still I see your celestial glow" least it kind of fits better and rhymes, plus it would be a good pre lyric to the whole "everglow" stuff.

That really annoys me too. It was so obviously the ryhme he wanted but for some reason he couldn't make it fit.

I will say though that everglow is the best song on a head full of dreams for me, I first heard the live version last year on the same day I stopped seeing someone I really cared about, I felt like his description of the song summed it up for me.
"to me, it's about – whether it's a loved one or a situation or a friend or a relationship that's finished or someone's passed away, after you've been through the sadness of something, you eventually also get this everglow. That's what it's about."
the song means more to me for my own reasons and what it reminds me of rather than the song being a perfected piece of writing.

New EP coming next year (Kaleidoscope EP) - but Chris said its "unlikely" they'll release another conventional album. Looks like Coldplay might be coming to an end.
