Is this the end of Coldplay? Everything about this album cycle seems like the end of something.

Well I got round to watching last nights gig, and the only thing I can say is that, for all the laughter and kicking them when they're down, they can somehow, yes SOMEHOW, still impress me. That gig got me out of my Victor Meldrew mode. Even Alex Petridis in The Guardian hit the nail on the head saying it was the perfect occasion for troubled times. When you see all the divisions in the country, and all the hatred, it's nice to see something which can bring everyone together and unite in harmony and provide a sense of community in a world that is sorely lacking it. Sounds a bit hippyish I know but after the last few days, that Coldplay gig was like a breath of fresh air. Only the most masochist individual with unheralded levels of self-hatred could deny such tribal pleasures.
There's magic and chemistry still there, it's about bottling those elements for their next album. Quite frankly, if they weren't so self-conscious and eager to please in the studio, we wouldn't be pouring so much scorn over them. There's smatterings of tunes here and there over the last few years that prove they've still got it, but it's whether they really want it.

They got asked about it when they were here and didn't give a clear answer, but they did mention they had kids now and didn't really know what do to after this, aa there wasn't much left to do.

Last two albums sound like Chris Martin solo albums anyways.

the album has got better for me over time, think some songs are abit odd like everglow sounding more like a rough live demo than a finished album version, just sounds messy and chris doesnt seem to be putting in much effort, most of his live vocal takes sound 100x better than whats on the album version (good song though), birds and up&up are good, cant stand hymn for the weekend, just mainstream rubbish.
still feel its likely their weakest album but its not awful by any means.

It definitely works a hell of a lot better live (Up&Up is biblical live, and Everglow was really beautiful at Glastonbury - showed how unnecessary all those horrible dance beats are...), but from Aventure of a Lifetime to Up&Up, there's nothing but utter dross: - Fun - Kaleidoscope - Army of One - X Marks the Spot - Amazing Day - Colour Spectrum All among the worst things Coldplay have ever done.

I quite like Amazing Day. It does feel a bit forced though.

Having Michael J Fox on stage is pretty much the best thing they've done for years. Ace moment.

Hymn For The Weekend could have been on Parachutes or AROBTTH. Top tune.

I had a friend ask me if I wanted to go with him to see this show. Is only 20 minutes from where I live. I said fuck no. This actually is awesome. Back To The Future is in my top 10 films of all time.

Michael J Fox looks relatively well. I thought he was violently shaking all the time because of his Parkinson's?

Coldplay are like that flaky friend of yours from high school. They've let you down so many times that you no longer want to be associated with them, yet every now and then they remind you of their good side, why you became pals with them in the first place.

The bit where they got Chris Martins kid on the big screen to pretend to like MJF is pretty cringe IMO. Christ, I fucking hate Coldplay now.

Just to be clear, I don't hate any of the members of Coldplay. Chris is obviously a very happy and nice guy and good luck to him, I just hate what they've become. If they were shit from day one, I wouldn't care, but they weren't. To go from the music video of 'Yellow' or 'The scientist' for example, to that new one with the dancing monkey and product placement, is mental.

Still a lackluster and totally uninspired song, but it's nice to see that Hymn for the Weekend almost becomes listenable if you strip away all the shit (and Beyoncé). It keeps reminding me of some subpar X-Factor auditions though.
