Something I noticed the other day: Coldplay and Muse have had careers which sharply parallel each other.
Both bands were significantly influenced by Radiohead. Their debuts were essentially their versions of The Bends (though Parachutes takes more from High and Dry and Fake Plastic Trees and Showbiz from Just and My Iron Lung). Their sophomore albums were their magnum opus works, and their third was just more of the same, but still good. Then they started to branch out and include exotic influences in their fourth albums (Black Holes & Revelations and Viva la Vida) before becoming a lot more conventional and mainstream (The Resistance/The 2nd Law, Mylo Xyloto), and have pretty much stayed on that track ever since. In fact the Muse fanbase has divided itself into "Old Muse" and "New Muse", like Oldplayers and Newplayers. Except while Coldplay keeps delving further and further into mainstream pop for fourteen year-olds, Muse at least tried to go back to the sound of their first three albums in Drones, though minus a few songs even that almost reached self-parody.

Crazy enough, I'm becoming a fan of this band during this AHFOD period for them, but it's not because of the new album. It's been because of discovering just how great the band can be, and has been, with the first few albums and parts of Ghost Stories. I mean... Shiver, Yellow, Everything's Not Lost, Sparks, Trouble, all of AROBTTH, Talk, Fix You, all of VLV, Life in Technicolor ii, plus much much much more. It's all great, and easy to see why they were once considered to be well on their way to being ranked one of the great British rock bands. I think for the first five in-a-half albums, I'm becoming a big fan of the band, and while AHFOD is disappointing, I think that A Head Full of Dreams, Birds, Everglow, Adventure of a Lifetime, and Up&Up all have good redeeming factors. I also think that Birds, Adventure of a Lifetime, and Up&Up signify where Coldplay should go once they get their head in the right place to write some great albums again. I believe that they can do it, but they need to ditch some of the electronic elements of their sound. Just by listening to AHFOD, which is an alright track, those elements sound very tired and overdone, and is a good song when you just strip it down to the band itself.

I think the band should just call it a day if they can't go back into the studio and make a proper album as a band. Stop hiring terrible producers and getting modern day pop artists in to "help" on songs. "Oh but Avenger they got Noel!" Yeah they got him in the studio to play a solo that's barely listenable under the muffled production. I don't take them seriously as a band until they release material as good as AROBTTH or Viva La Vida.

They keep watering down their lyrics and band chemistry by adding outsiders. It cheapens the product.

The craziest thing is when they play Clocks for example at the iHeartRadio show last year, they still got it: But choose to be creatively devolving in the studio. Where did it all go wrong?

I've always thought Muse was a more hysterical version of Radiohead. And less good. But yeah, agree with all of this. Have been thinking this as well. Muse's last album was pretty bad too.

While he has never been a poet, his lyrics during Viva La Vida era were his peak, because at the very least, they were evocative with the imagery expressed in the songs - very Dickensian at times. There's so much wrong with his songwriting now I can't be bothered to list off what is precisely wrong, but it's all round appalling. Bad melodies, bad lyrics and bad production basically.

"I got a rocket ship that I wanna ride" "You were island and I passed you by, you were an island to discover" "I said drink from me, drink me, that we shoot across the sky" "Everyone I know says I'm a fool to mess with you, and everyone I know says it's a stupid thing to do" "My heart go boom, bo-boom boom" "Stood on a bridge, tied to the noose, you came along and you cut me loose"

"My heart go boom, bo-boom boom" Wait, are you telling me that Kanye West didn't write this line? It totally sounds like him

I haven't heard much from Coldplay since the release week. I'm sure that will increase as the Super Bowl draws near. They are going to get crushed on social media and labeled sell outs when people like Beyonce and Rihanna come strutting out.

Does anyone know what kind of jacket Chris at the end of The Scientist video?
Oh yeah, and Coldplay used to be good - but not anymore.

It was an emerging trend back in 2002. I have a similar jacket I bought from Urban Outfitter back in fall of 2005. I think I wore it once to a Radiohead show in Philadelphia the following summer. Realized what cool was at that show and it wasn't my jacket!
