Noels solo is a thing of beauty.

What do you Coldplay fans think of this? "Tee fo' dat, dat...Tee fo' dat, dat...Tee fo' dat, dat...Tee fo' da-datty, datty..."

What do you Coldplay fans think of this? "Tee fo' dat, dat...Tee fo' dat, dat...Tee fo' dat, dat...Tee fo' da-datty, datty..." I assume that the singer here is recalling a time when he was in a bit of a jam, and required the help of a good samaritan. One imagines that by singing " Tee fo' dat" - or "tea for that" - the singer is expressing their thanks for said kind deed, and offering to buy their new friend dinner for their troubles. A cheeky Nandos, perhaps?

The leak has confirmed my suspicions..............this album is not very good. A few good songs, I quite like Army of One, A Head Full of Dreams and from the middle of Up & Up. Some awful songs, Beyonces one is dreadful as is Amazing Day, Fun is terrible so is Everglow and a couple of others (can't remember the names) Obamas speech thing is a total cringe. Overall pretty poor.

Yeah, Everglow? Heard it all before and incredibly generic music. The nice twinkly piano can't disguise just how dull it is - every single song from their first four albums, including b-sides, is much better than this.
Chris Martn is starting to turn into this...

If it really is poor, I hope it gets annihilated in the music press. It should give them some thinking to do.

My God, that Beyonce song is beyond bad. "I feel so drunk and I shoot across the sky" WTF?! Birds is pretty awful too,the whole album produced to within an inch of its bloated life.
Just listening to some sort of bizzare almost rap thing now.... "staring at darkness, staring at doom you make my heart go boo boo boo boom" hahaha.

Listening to it just now and the first couple of songs were alright. Quite enjoyed Birds but it reminded me of something, can't think what though. Then Beyonce appeared...

By far the best song is Up & Up, perhaps the only very good tune on this album. But guess what it is inspired by - Champagne Supernova says Chris Martin (yeah it doesn't sound like it but it emphasises a full band British pop feel to it). And the tune A Head Full Of Dreams is alright because guess what, it reminds some of U2. But looking at people's reactions and the rest is not very good I see.
Which confirms to me that Coldplay are at their best when they have the right influences in their songs and at there is still talent there. When they were influenced Echo & the Bunnymen, U2, Radiohead, Oasis, George Harrison, Arcade Fire, Kraftwerk, Kate Bush, Brian Eno, My Bloody Valentine, etc they were brilliant. They were much like an amalgamation of all those acts - not the most original but very perceptive to those acts brilliance and they acted on it.
But when you are living in LA and you are surrounded by shallow vain pricks like Rihanna, Justin Bieber, Beyonce, Maroon 5, Kanye, Jay Z, etc then you are going to be led astray down the wrong path.
It is arguably more disappointing than Oasis releasing Heathen Chemistry because all inspiration and talent seemed washed up, but with Coldplay I still believe there is a still a lot of talent going to so much waste.

Adventure of a Lifetime isn't the chart hit that perhaps many would have expected though. I fear you are right though - Chris Martin may just turn into a male Madonna trying to get down with the kids but looking like he's having a mid life crisis.

X&Y sold massively and was a huge commercial success, but the reaction was lukewarm and Chris/The Band knew they were running out of ideas in the "classic" Coldplay style - so they amped up the creativity and came up with Viva la Vida. The problem is that was back when Coldplay cared what people thought - for better or for worse, they don't any more.

Ever since 2002 when Coldplay were labeled "depressing" he's tried constantly to spin this band in another direction. To sit firmly in the middle of pop culture. His big quotes around Viva is he "wanted it to be cool to like Coldplay" again. He's been repeating that mantra for awhile. He's fallen in with a real plastic crowd out in LA and has become a product of Hollywood. Every move is extremely calculated and most songs are extremely safe. Like Bono before him, Chris will always chase popularity and being relevant despite a rising age of uncoolness.

Difference between Bono and Chris Martin is that Bono had about 10 albums before he desperately wanted to ditch creativity for commerciality. Martin dropped the ball from Mylo Xyloto onwards. About the same stage of their career as U2 were with Pop, and I know which album is miles ahead. If Coldplay had a hint of that ambition they may still be decent.

The first half is commercial fodder (not to say there are some good tunes there) but the second half which Danger Mouse produced is much more U2ish and genuinely the most interesting they've been in a long time.

Just finished the album there. There's a few decent enough songs on it in Birds, Up & Up, Adventure of a Lifetime and Army of One but even then none of them are up there with their best stuff. The title track is passable too but the rest really isn't much at all. Fun is quite boring, Hymn for the Weekend doesn't really work and I'm not quite sure what the point in Colour Spectrum and Kaleidoscope is. Everglow makes a good attempt at being the dullest song on the album but is beaten to it by Amazing Day which may be their dullest song yet.
As much as they're a great live band, I'm quite glad I didn't get a ticket at £70 to see them this morning.

They still know how to crank out a potential radio hit single. - Song For Someone - Every Breaking Wave 10-15 years ago those probably would have been hit songs. Now...................not so much.
