I've been listening to these guys the past couple of days after a long time, so naturally I was interested in finding out whether there's been any news about them. But since their last gig a couple of years ago, there's been absolutely nothing of note. Usually this would be cause for concern with any band, but as it is the Roses, they are well known for keeping things very secretive and not saying virtually anything to the press ever since their incarnation. Anyway, here's a lengthy but great article praising Second Coming from the Quietus - I posted this in an obscure bootleg thread so you may have missed the link. thequietus.com/articles/16886-stone-roses-second-coming-reviewReally interesting perspective on the album, that might make you revisit the album from the writer's point of view. They took a turn that was very unexpected - they had the 60s pop of the first album, the Madchester grooves of Fools Gold and One Love on later singles, and then this blues rock turn that incorporates much more influences than initially believed. It's still not my cup of tea I'll admit and it probably never will be, because being brutally honest, blues rock isn't my thing, but hearing all the other wide ranging influences makes for a fascinating listen of a band that clearly has wide ranging ecletic tastes. And at the very least, you can still appreciate some brilliant lyrics, and of course, the fanststic musicianship of them - in my opinion, the tightest knit and most musically adept group I've heard. I can't say I've ever been the biggest Stone Roses fan - I think there's a few filler tunes on the debut that personally for me stops if from being hailed in the way it is (a couple tunes should have been replaced with stronger b-sides) but I really do hope they release new music, partly the fascination as to what type of music they will release.

I truly hope so - but I'm afraid they won't.

Unfortunately, I can't see it happening. The fact that we've heard absolutely nothing from them isn't a good sign and I seem to remember them saying that if there was going to be an album the it would be out in 2015.

No chance, the moment has passed now. Glasgow Green was 2 years ago this weekend, that was their final gig.

I just can't see it happening.
They may tour again at some point, but they've developed such an inflated legacy that a new album wouldn't seem appropriate.
Blur, for instance, are a band who constantly had projects on the go which is why an album in 2015 didn't come as a huge surprise.
With the Roses, they've let their legacy build to a point where a whole new generation of 15 year olds buy bucket hats and have their artwork on posters and listen to Fools Gold and that is what that band is to them- it's a really strange, specific sort of legacy and an album to reinvent that at this stage wouldn't be appropriate at all.
It wouldn't be the same band in people's heads either. Using The La's as another example, that solitary album has been left for people to use and forms an image in their heads about that band. If Lee Mavers surfaced from his underground lair where he's definitely 100% totally mixing these follow-up albums, another album wouldn't seem like the same band.
Just like the Roses, their early gold streak has been frozen in time by the extended nothingness that followed, and any future releases wouldn't wash.

It's less likely than a new Rolling Stones album

Now we're in it, that album seems even less likely.

I'll put my neck on the line and say they will release new music. Like I said, no news isn't necessarily bad news in the world of The Stone Roses.
None of them are involved in other projects - if John Squire and Reni are pretty reclusive, Mani and Ian Brown are usually doing something outwith yet they aren't, so I have my suspicions they have something up their sleeve.

Probably the most obscure Roses track out there, uploaded by my good self.

As others have said, I think the moment's passed now any new music wouldn't be treated with quite as much hype as it would have been a couple of years ago. I hope they don't release anything as I'm far from convinced it would be good and there's no need for them to ruin their legacy.

I can't see it happening. I saw them twice after they reunited and although I loved to see them playing together again, I don't see they would ever go back into the studio to make a third album. and to be honest, I prefer they save their legacy with their debut album than coming back with an another "Second Coming".

I think the moment had pasesed. That "reunion" tour was awhile ago at this point. Momentum lost?

It's less likely than a new Rolling Stones album The last thing the world needs is another new Stones album. I thought Doom and Gloom and one more shot were absolute class. They've been dormant so long they must have some good tunes. I reckon they'd overload it with filler, but I'd just love to hear some new songs, and at least one or two would be great. Anyway, just an example, I don't think we'll hear new material from either band, and both bands have suggested that we will

Probably not, but I guess it would be cool to hear it if they did. I'd like for Ian to keep going with his solo career. His most recent album had really good songs on it like For the Glory, Marathon Man, Stelify, and Crowning of the Poor. Some of my favorite songs from him are Be There (With UNKLE), Corpses In Their Mouths, FEAR, Longsight M13, Keep What Ya Got, and Time Is My Everything

I'm afraid that if they did release another album it would be terrible. Second Coming was a really good album imo, but already much worse than their debut and after that...well, John Squire really didn't do anything worth noting, Ian Brown solo had the odd tune but, to me, was mostly bland.
Wouldn't say the moment has passed though - if they pop up tomorrow and announce a new album, they will get all the attention they want.

No, I think it won't happen. Also, I think they should be honest with their fans (I'm a fan too, but not that crazy) and tell them the truth. They're just hiding from them , it's time to say something.
By the way, "The Stone Roses" on vinyl is selling at £7,49 (what a bloody bargain) on Amazon UK, if you want.

I'm one of the few who still believe that there will be a new album. Yes, I agree. It's been over a year since speculation that they'd split - if they had, surely they would have confirmed it by now, in addition to the fact that Ian Brown has never stayed inactive for so long, neither has Mani. Wouldn't be at all surprised if they released an album late this year or next year. Mystique has always been a part of The Stone Roses game - always coy on everything and never saying practically anything to the press.

BUMP!
So, has anyone changed their mind as to whether there will be a new album - I'm still convinced there will be. Remember, no news isn't necessarily bad news with them...
