Tbh I'm pretty doubtful about their next album - seems like they could do a hatrick of mediocrity. Ghost Stories was the first album that didn't have a song I absolutely loved.
Parachutes - Yellow (9/10) A Rush of Blood to the Head - Politik (10/10) AMAZING SONG X&Y - Til Kingdom Come (8/10) Viva La Vida - Strawberry Swing (10/10) Mylo Xyloto - Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall (8/10) Ghost Stories - Erm...Midnight? (7/10)

Coldplay can do bombast with the best of them but they are a better band when they are subtle. Ghost Stories was mediocre but at least they kinda took a step back from all the BS that has been in their albums since X&Y. Just didn't have the tunes for Ghost Stories.
What do y'all think is the most controversial or misunderstood Coldplay album?
X&Y is definitely their BHN. I obviously love BHN way more but X&Y has some good moments just it just gets lost in the bigness of the album. Square One, White Shadows, Fix You, Low, and X&Y are as good or better than anything on Ghost Stories. Even the mediocre material - Speed of Sound, Talk, A Message, The Hardest Part are better than the weaker stuff on their past two albums.
Listening back to Viva La Vida. I might have to say that, that closing side 2 from Yes on - might be their best closing sequence in their career. All five songs are good with a couple of them being great. Tough choice, because I think Parachutes has a really underrated back half and AROBTTH's second half is just about as strong as Viva's. X&Y's back half is lackluster and one of the main reasons why that album isn't as good as their best work.

I think it'll be a while before we have a controversial Coldplay album For me, X&Y is...well...shit. Plasticky, boring, oversized, often sickly sweet with awful lyrics - and it has fucking Fix You on it. The only actively bad album they've made IMO. I think Viva is wonderfully consistent, love every track - the only change I would make is swap Cemeteries of London for Glass of Water, but it's still a great tune. I think the second half of AROBTTH pales in comparison to the first five - Green Eyes, A Whisper and to a lesser extent Amsterdam are fairly all mediocre and don't merit repeated listens. Ghost Stories is simply the definition of bland. I've been trying to form my top ten Coldplay tracks after doing the same for Oasis on that vote thread, tough stuff.

I meant controversial in a way that maybe someone on here has X&Y as their favorite album. Ghost Stories probably has the lowest of the low material wise for me. Those three songs that I mentioned have to be in the top ten of worst coldplay songs. It really only has one very good, not great song for me - Always in My Head. Ghost Stories has some other good ones but at least Mylo Xyloto and X&Y have some legit high points. Green Eyes and Amsterdam are top 15 Coldplay songs for me, the latter is in contention for being their best closer. The three between them are some of their most underrated (Title track, Warning Sign) and interesting material (A Whisper). Crest Of Waves is such a great song. Maybe a top 5 Coldplay song for me. Have some great b-sides.

Sleeping Sun, 1:36, Animals, Crest of Waves, Gravity, All of Prospekt's March, Moving to Mars, Ghost Story, All Your Friends....great b-sides. My official top 10...sort of: (not including Faultline collaborations) 1. Politik 2. Clocks / The Scientist 3. Strawberry Swing 4. Glass of Water 5. See You Soon 6. Lovers in Japan / Trouble 7. Death And All His Friends 8. A Rush of Blood to the Head 9. Til Kingdom Come 10. Violet Hill / Viva La Vida Honourable mentions: Yellow, Don't Panic, Spies, In My Place, White Shadows, The rest of Viva, Hurts Like Heaven, Every Teardrop is a Waterfall, All Your Friends, Midnight.

Did I ever mention seeing them at "Bizarre Festival" in Germany (despite the name, it was a quite conventional, fairly big rock festival), in about July 2000, just about when the Yellow video had been released. They were (I think) first on the bill at about 3pm and there were approximately 500 people in front of the stage. Only a handful of people seemed to recognise Yellow and/or Shiver perhaps and cheered accordingly, the rest of the crowd was clueless. In hindsight this has become one of the most memorable concert experiences I've had.
I bought Parachutes later the year and it's still my favourite album by them. Don't really have the knowledge to rank all of them. Parachutes and A Rush Of Blood To The Head are classics, no doubt. I do even love X&Y for some reason, probably personal. Starting with the release of Violet Hill and the following album they kinda lost me. Life's definitely too short to spend it with an album like Ghost Stories.

When all is said and done, Coldplay is going to have a killer "Best of" album. Yeah, I think there's a good case to be made for Coldplay being the best singles band of the last 10-15 years. For what it's worth my top 10 would be 1. Violet Hill 2. Yellow 3. The Scientist 4. Viva La Vida 5. Hurts Like Heaven 6. Midnight 7. Charlie Brown 8. God Put A Smile Upon Your Face 9. Daylight 10. O

I think Viva is their best album lyrically (of course this is Chris Martin so there's more than a few cliches/clunkers in there) with X&Y being the worst: You cut me down a tree,And brought it back to me,And that's what made me see, Where I was going wrong.Wise words. If I didn't know better, I'd think these were Liam Gallagher lyrics probably. But the last line would be something like "but that's just how it'll be." A Rush of Blood is amazing, especially The Scientist and In My Place. I also love Parachutes, especially Trouble and Don't Panic. Viva La Vida is alright, I love the production. Don't really care at all for the others.

A Rush of Blood To The Head Parachutes Viva La Vida X&Y Mylo Xyloto Ghost Stories The interesting thing about Coldplay is I always found their earlier albums like Parachutes and Rush of Blood to be more mature and deeper lyrics than what came later when they were older. This,
If I was to do a best of, it'd be even heavier on the early stuff than Oasis!
My top 10 is; Politik Amsterdam A Rush of Blood To The Head Everything's Not Lost (especially live versions) Warning Sign, Yellow Square One God Put A Smile Upon Your Face Don't Panic Shiver
I liked Viva La Vida a lot but I liked it more as an album than loving any of the songs in particular
