From the atmospheric acoustics of Parachutes, the power of A Rush of Blood to the Head, the grandiose revolution of Viva La Vida and most recently the heartbreak of Ghost Stories - what's your ranking of Coldplay's albums? Mine:
1. Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends (9/10) 2. A Rush of Blood to the Head (9/10) 3. Parachutes (8/10)
(Prospekt's March EP 7/10)
4. Ghost Stories 6.5/10 5. Mylo Xyloto 6/10 6. X&Y 5/10

A Rush of Blood To The Head Parachutes Viva La Vida X&Y Mylo Xyloto Ghost Stories The interesting thing about Coldplay is I always found their earlier albums like Parachutes and Rush of Blood to be more mature and deeper lyrics than what came later when they were older.

I think Viva is their best album lyrically (of course this is Chris Martin so there's more than a few cliches/clunkers in there) with X&Y being the worst: You cut me down a tree,And brought it back to me,And that's what made me see, Where I was going wrong.Wise words.

Parachutes - 8.5/10 A Rush of Blood to the Head - 8.5/10 VIva La Vida - 7.5/10 X&Y - 5.5/10 Mylo Xyloto - 5/10 Ghost Stories - 5/10
Parachutes is their most enjoyable album for me. It's subtle, melodic, and eerie. A perfect bridge from 90's to 00's in terms of popular British guitar music. A Rush of Blood to the Head is their most fully formed album from start to finish. Not a bad song on it. Like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by WIlco, the after effects of 9/11 are really felt in this album. The band seized their moment on this album. Coldplay doing their loud/heavy soft rock thing. It's also their most emotionally genuine album. Viva la Vida is their most adventurous album. It take you on a journey, but there's a couple bad moments on it (42). Mylo Xyloto is overly polished and empty bombast but it does feature two bonafide top 10-15 Coldplay songs, in Hurts like Heaven and Charlie Brown, which X&Y can't claim. Ghost Stories has about 3-4 good songs, but none of them are great and the album is pretty forgettable. Ink, True Love, and Another's Arms are terrible songs. I know O gets a lot of love, but its pretty bland as well. Chris Martin solo on the piano isn't as good as Noel Gallagher on acoustic guitar.

Cheap meaning they were obviously going for a poppy, modern bubble gum vibe. I also don't like how so many songs vocals on that album begin almost instantly. Too fast for me. Take "42" for example.

Are we all in agreement that Ghost Stories is the worst album? The song "O" is such. Beautiful song. I rank Ghost Stories last mostly because of its length and has the feeling of a Chris Martin solo album. Still contain good songs like Always In My Head, Magic, Midnight and Oceans. Much like how Mylo was overindulgent and long. It still has some of the band's strongest tunes (Hurts Like Heaven, Charlie Brown, Paradise, Major Minus, Us Against The World).

I love Viva, the whole grandiose Life/Death/War/Love was done tastefully and I love every single track - the production is fantastic and the whole album just has this feel to me....like a heartbreaking epicness - so bright and optimistic yet so melancholy. Sunshine through the rain, as Noel would say. Also the variety of instrumentation and the creativity shown is gorgeous - shoehaze, Afro-Pop, mandolins, Iraqi guitar instrumentals, orchestras, ballads, violin solos and cathedral sized organs mixed together and yet never out of place. Don't get the hate for 42 - one of my favourites, plus the only sneering/cool Coldplay lyric I know of:
You thought you might have been a ghost - You didn't get to heaven, But you made it close.
Also Strawberry Swing is one of the most beautiful songs ever, it actually feels like a summer breeze.

Mylo Xyloto is overly polished and empty bombast but it does feature two bonafide top 10-15 Coldplay songs, in Hurts like Heaven and Charlie Brown, which X&Y can't claim. I might not like the same-yness of X&Y but Fix You is one of their best(if not the best) songs, building up to that final chorus, nothing else from them has have been that great since.

I will always defend Coldplay. They are a great band who have produced some great albums and put on fantastic performances. A lot of the songs are just really good and THAT'S why I love them.
Politik A Rush of Blood to the Head O Fix You Sparks Don't Panic Hurts Like Heaven Death and All His Friends Amsterdam
The list could go on, it's really melodic, soft pop rock songs. Chris has a very unique and I love it.

A Rush of Blood To The Head Parachutes Viva La Vida X&Y
I'd put the first four in this order with the first two miles ahead of the others. I honestly haven't given the last two a fair listen though.

Coldplay is the StarTrek of Alternative music.. the EVEN NUMBERED albums are so much better! 1. A Rush of Blood to the Head (Dark yet beautiful) 2. Viva La Vida 3. Ghost Stories 4. X&y 5. Parachutes 6. Mylo Xyloto AROBTTH is one of the best albums of the 2000's.. And was probably one of the few mainstream albums to perfectly capture the mood of the world at the time. Sort of like a less progressive O.K Computer. Viva La Vida is totally epic, and Ghost Stories is they're darkest and most interesting album since Rush of Blood
