Maybe one of the odder tracks on the album, but I am really digging Fame and Fortune, something enchanting about it, really like it! Can't get that one out of me fucking head. Catchy as fook.

I still can't get into this band and I've tried so many times over the last decade. Listened to them before, never felt the need to get in to them. Went completely over my head. Bland guitars, shit vocals.... some decent lyrics but I've heard it before but better with The Smiths and The Kinks. And Pete Doherty is the biggest fud in the music industry. Thanks to these twats, they inspired a whole deluge of NME shite wankfest material like The Enemy, Razorlight and Brother. And don't even get me started on Dirty Pretty Things. A massive nail in the coffin of British guitar music. Franz Ferdinand were way way better from that era. Usually a big fan of your posts - which are mostly perfectly reasonable - but honestly, Franz Ferdinand? That's quite the insult Thing is, the Libertines simply have the melodies, it comes across as rather loose sometimes but Doherty has never had any problems writing good tunes and I love that. Also, saying "the lyrics are worse than Morrissey's" is a little harsh, don't you think?

Plus, don't forget that libertines are the reason for some excellent bands such as Arctic Monkeys, The View, Catfish, and most recently Pretty Vicious (excellent up and coming band if you haven't already listened). Also, matt, shush, they are great and Franz are baws (IMO)

Arctic Monkeys picked up where The Libertines left off.

Jacqueline is a song that they have never bettered. The Libertines sorely lack the sharp wit of Morrissey's lyrics, nor do they come close to evoking the melancholy of him (or Johnny Marr's music) either. I find them utterly charmless and Doherty makes Kanye West look like a saint. I think they just suck big time and I just cannot get into them with - what is in my ears - rather beige, one dimensional music.

These guys somehow got a higher score than Oasis ever did on Pitchfork. I figured they would destroy the libertines. Definitely Maybe got 8.8, and Morning Glory 8.9, but yeah, everything else after got a worse rating than this - including The Masterplan, which got a fucking 3.7!! Just read The Masterplan one. Yeah. Disgusting. 8.8 for Definitely Maybe is almost as big a joke. More and more fuel for my Pitchfork-hating fire. If only there reviews were one 10th as impressive as their website. Like a few others I've never got the big fuss over The Libertines. I liked their 2 biggest hits and Gunga Din, but the rest... meh. Far, far prefer the Arctic Monkeys.

I listened to the album once, not in my preferred listening experience; it's ok....
Today I'm gonna take some peyotè, throw on some headphones, listen to the album and fuck a hooker.
God bless.

More than I dared expect. Better than I dared hope.
Being a Libertines fan is a frustrating experience. But they never let you down on record

I used to like them and I have their best of, but kind of I forgot about them for some years til they announced a new album this year.
They were like a rawer version of Arctic Monkeys, too bad Peter fucked the band, so it was easy for me to like Arctic Monkeys, their first works reminded Libs a lot.
This song wasn't a single but it's amazing.

A bit sad to see so much hate for The Libs here and only little love. Each to their own when it comes to tastes, but felt like someone needed to list a few great things about them/their impact and why they deserve their spot in the music history. - The Libertines were one of the few actually intelligent bands of their style. You can slag them off all you want for their drug use and behaviour, but they also had brains and that's what made them so compelling in the first place. Right from the start it was clear they were very literate and not shy about it - their relationship with their fans. They wanted to keep the barriers between the band and the audience down, there's a very few bands that made it as big as they were and kept those barriers as low they kept them - they got big just before the internet got huge, and if not exactly pioneered then put its possibilities into great use. Just the amount of guerilla gigs they announced on their forums... All the forum posts and keeping in contact with fans. It's everyday thing now, part of the marketing, but back then it was only taking its baby steps and the Libs were setting the example - they actually dared to dream and to make their own myths. The whole Albion, Arcadia etc thing... music is often a form of escapism for people but still musicians rarely dare to be openly idealistic and create their own universe. People are so scared of ridicule and public is always so eager to jump at any chance of laughing at someone, but they had the guts and also the energy to make people get involved and interested - they brought the UK to 2000s, rock music wise. The rest of the world seemed to have moved on and got hang of the new century while the UK was still stuck in the post-britpop mud - and while yes, they created their own myths and Peter had a bit of a fantasist trait in him, they also truly walked it like they talked it... while that truly wasn't the healthy way to go, all in all, in rock history you rarely get bands who really do that. It's like yes, there was stuff that was just made up stories, and stuff blown out of proportions but basically, you never knew what was true and what was not because what you learned to be true for a fact was pretty unbelieveable as it was I'd add more but getting so damn sleepy here now! (I know this is written in past tense even though they are again back together, but it just came out in that way as I was thinking of the past and the era when they first appeared)

Pretty great album I gotta say. Barbarians, Fame and Fortune, You're My Waterloo, The Milkman's Horse, Dead for Love, and Glasgow Coma Scale Blues are my favorites. The Milkman's Horse is actually beyond incredible, might be my favorite song from this year!

Officer Jim Kurring, I ended up seeing them in Paradiso next year March. I saw them in a bigger venue last year, but seeing them (also a lot of bands) in Paradiso is always something special like seeing Arctic Monkeys in the same venue in 2011. But I'll be at balcony as I don't want to be smashed by young kids.

Still haven't heard it, looking forward to getting my grubby paws on the Deluxe edition sometime soon. 'Lust Of The Libertines', brilliant song title that.

Finally got the opportunity to listen to it all the way through. First impression was that it was good but a 'tame' good rather than a really exciting one - however, I enjoyed the album more in the second half. Listening to it the second time, I enjoyed it more.
I think what held me back a bit at first was that the production was rather restrained (for the Libertines), which took away from their usual rousing, reckless choruses mostly. For instance, Gunga Din is terrific but the chorus feels underwhelming (in sound and production, not songwriting). That's my only criticism of the album.
I have the 16 track version and am very glad I got the extra songs. My favourites are definitely:
Heart of the Matter You're my Waterloo Gunga Din Fame and Fortune 7 Deadly Sins
Going to listen to it today. The songs are good to great, production holds it back a bit too much, but overall an album I'm very happy to have and can't wait to enjoy over and over.

Finally got mine, was shipped a day before release... it's never taken that long for something to be shipped but hey, it's here. I'll give it a listen later; I've only heard Gunga Din so far.
