Weird thing about The Dying of The Light is that I thought it was shit in the soundcheck version but on the album it's one of my favourites.

Noel said from the FB Q&A that no two tracks put side by side from this album would match, or seem right - or words to that effect anyway. I don't mind that it doesn't quite flow or follow, makes for some variance and stops it sounding samey? Good point, Dig Out Your Soul flows pretty well, but it's one of my least favourite Oasis albums so it doesn't really make a difference.

Woke up this morning and bang. What a happy Valentine’s day.. Shopping trip to Manchester planned, so found a link and quickly burned to a CD for the journey. Only got as far as mid way through X-Ray eyes before parking up. Shopped, but only with the desire to get back into the car to carry on listening – journey home via parent’s house – broke the album up into 2 further segments. Then proceeded to cook a three course meal for the missus with album playing through shitty laptop speakers, OK, already feeling that this was a good album. Now later in the evening/early AM – I have had the chance to listen through about three times on headphones. But I will collate my thoughts as I listen through again.
Riverman
Opening takes me back to Wonderwall and then a Beatles lyric reference, Noel through and through. Very chilled opening to an album, but the break and chorus is contagious. Loving the ‘riverman run’ and ‘electrify the storm’. Followed by a guitar solo, which is what has been missing from Noel’s music recently. A spectacular solo, sounding like something from Abraxas. Missus said she got shivers in the car on first listen, and said it was a very grown up sounding Noel Gallagher. Saxophone another lovely touch, and very sexy solo at the end of the track. IMO, one of his best efforts since the late 90s. Flows very well as a piece of music.
ITHOTM
Wasn’t so sure on this one when first released 6 months ago.., my god it’s a grower. Fits well on the album. Everyone’s heard it, and many do slag it off – but I like the little catchy guitar lick. Great chorus and the ‘Story of the Charmless Man’ ‘Nananas’ will go down a treat at the live shows
X-Ray
Love this, as has already been said – this sounds like a million songs in one. Masterplan, Neil Young’s Hello Cowgirl, Led Zep’s Stairway to Heaven, Bowie’s Ground Control to Major Tom etc all prevalent. I like the shot to the sun lyric, referencing IIHAG. Another guitar solo. I hate songs that seem to drag, but I when I listen to this one, I do wish it went on for longer. Lock All The Doors, Almost feels out of place on the album, very, very early Oasis sounding – which is understandable from where is has been resurrected. Doesn’t quite fit with the modern product that is the rest of the album. Nice BIOD drum references. I feel it gets into the chorus too soon, and maybe a longer first verse would have benefit as there isn’t much build up to the chorus. Feels nostalgic but also a little throwaway to me.
TDOTL
Was really looking forward to this one, and it doesn’t disappoint. The twinkling piano keys through throughout are a nice touch. Almost haunting production, and has some of Noel’s more heartfelt lyrics. Not too dis-similar to the sound-check and given better treatment than IIHAG, which felt a let down following my own expectations after hearing the sound-checked version.
The Right Stuff
I couldn’t believe my ears on first listen – the most far out Noel has gone IMO. A basic, lovely grove, and a lot of what can only be described as, in Noel’s own words, “space jazz”. Almost feels like this would fit on Moon Safari by Air, very chilled and lots going on musically. Noel almost takes a back step on vocals until mid way through the song. The lyrics are a bit lacking and the ‘jeans get frayed’ makes me cringle a little for some reason. But this track’s definitely more about the music than the lyrical content. In my top 3 off the album at the moment. Epic guitar solo, which would have fit on BHN.
While the Song Remains
I love the intro, almost like something from a dark dance album. Then the song kicks in, shuffles along like POTQ with a bass line very reminiscent of Falling down. If the lyrics in the last song were lacking, these make up for it. “Find me a place where the sun shines through the rain” classic Noel hah. There is a bridge and the guitars sound good enough to break me in half. A highlight of the album
The Mexican
Does sound a bit rushed. Probably my least favourite on the album, but in comparison to my least fave on the first record – this one wins hands down. Effects on the guitar remind me of sons of the stage. Also like the sounds of the guitars ‘echoing’ each other as the song goes into its final chorus. Riff is simple, but half decent
You Know We Can’t go back
Sounds like something else that I’ve heard before, but it’s escaping me at the moment. Maybe Snow Patrol-esce. Very bouncy and uplifting, another strong tune and love the lyrics on this one. Could use this as our wedding song.. Not one of my favourites, but a definite love song.
Ballad of the Mighty I
We have all head this one, I must have heard it a ton of times already but still grows and doesn’t get old. Again, like the Right Stuff, it’s a bit far out for Noel with a great disco beat. Love the bass and the tempo, the sound of Noel’s voice. It’s all there for me on this one, hard to believe this sits as the last track on the album that begins with Riverman
For those who like numbers: Riverman 9.5/10 ITHOTM 7.5/10 X-Ray 8.5/9 Lock All The Doors 7.5/10 TDOTL 8.5/10 Right Stuff 9/10 Song Remains 9/10 Mexican 7/10 Can’t Go Back 8/10 BOTMI 9.5/10
A little overwhelmed and drunk this evening – but think this album is a corker at the moment!

Only heard a shitty youtube version that sounded like it was on double speed once through but I think I'm gonna love it. The Mexican stood out as the weakest track. I'm pumped for the real deal.

Riverman 9 - Cool song. Guitar solo yeah!
In The Heat of The Moment 7 - feels so old now. The nanananas doesn't match anything on the album
The Girl With the X-Ray Eyes 8 - Very ceremonial. Strange chord pattern, nice solo.
Lock All The Doors 5 - Sorry all i can think is Liam singing this. The most Oasisish song in the album (of course, it was written 23 fucking years ago) - Kind of mixes with "Alive"
The Dying of the Light 8 - I loved the demo so much, i was hoping Wonderwall 2, some chord quartet or something. But instead creates such a cool atmosphere with no "explosive" moment. It will sound so good for someone who didn't heard the demo. Guitar Solo yeah!
The Right Stuff 9.5 - this is so crazy, not Noel, but again so Good. Love the transition that makes in the album.
While The Song Remains the Same 9 - Love the sax intro, the drums makes this song. Don't know why it remind me of "Don't Panic" by Coldplay. Beautiful.
The Mexican 6 - This is the weakest link. Liam singing it would give it a 7 or 8. Reminds of "Three Ring Circus" (which i don't like)
You Know We Can't Go Back 6,5 - Way too poppy, feels like The Fame 2.0. Overall feels like a B-side. I would put DTD here.
Ballad of the Mighty I 8.5 - Good closer, love the atmosphere i think it melts down with YKCGB so good, i would've put a longer weirder outro.
Solid 8 - Overall i love the guitar solos, love The Right STuff, riverman, WTSRTS, Ballad of the Mighty I. very nice drums, good sax touches, but no killer single for a super comeback. I hope it gets the public and critical acclaim it deserves, and definitely better than HFB1.

Riverman 9/10
What a weird way to start a record. Mellow song that kinda gets into your hear as listens go. I'm not a sax lover, far from it. but it does the job. The guitar sound is gorgeous.
ITHOTM 4/10
SKIPPER
X-Ray 10/10
Blur solo, elements of bowie and Suede. Where has Noel Gallagher gone ? Very risky track 3, unusual song for the Chief. Like the child of SOTSOG, Space Odddity and The Great Escape by Blur. Damon Albarn collab' in the next two years. Come on.
Lock All The Doors 8.5/10
Hi, is this 1992 ? Yes it is, but with a modern production. The melody brings you back way back then, which is logical since it's an old song. Good rocking tune that fits, curiously.
Dying of Light 8.5/10
Maybe a bit too long for my liking, and i'm a strings and brass lover so i would have liked a version of that with those instruments. But you cant always get what you want right ? Maybe the "demo" is like that. Let's hope. Great melody, but i kind of struggle to listen to it from start to finish without thinking of something else. That'll probably pass with time. The shorter the ballads the better though.
Right Stuff 8.5/10
Groovy babaaay. Another unusual tune for Noely. I like the guitar work on this one.
Song Remains 8/10
This annoyed me at first, but i like it after a few listens.
Mexican 3/10
80'sssss rock as fuck, arggg. Filler, but probably skip and replace with time by Do the Damage, Freaky Teeth or Revolution Song.
Can’t Go Back 8/10
An obvious single for the radio. Like it but the production is a bit too U2 for my liking. I'll get used to it. Good album closer as...
BOTMI 2/10
... I still dont rate this one. Pastiche, tired melody and vocals, shitty remake of What a life. What the hell. When the guitar kicks in before the chorus, that's one of the worst moments in rock n roll. EVER. What a shit sound. Make my whole body cringe.
Verdict : very cohesive album, despite having so many different styles in the melody and instrumentation. Very sad also in parts, which is surprising coz Noel keep on saying he is very happy. But i'm more and more doubting that. Something's wrong with this man, he's got a bit melancholia in his songs lately. Maybe he's missing Oasis. Or it's a bunch of old songs he couldn't use in the band.
As of now it's a 7/10 because of three shitty tracks out of ten, which is too much. B-sides will save that and it will be a 8/10.

Alright then. Doing this in a random order.
RIVERMAN I expected this to be a Pinball rip off, because as we all know, when Noel says he is influenced by something, it will sound almost exactly like that something.
This doesn't. And it's so different from anything else Noel has done, but it's still typically Noel. It's very natural. The guitarsolo is great, and so is the sax, which is saying something, as I fucking hate saxophones.
Is it the best one on the album? Well, one of the best. Is it better than Live Forever, as Noel made us think? In my eyes it's not, but it doesn't matter.
Not going to do ITHOTM.
THE GIRL WITH X-RAY EYES Ground control to major Tom! The influences are clear on this one. I love this one, it's one of my favourites.
Is the chorus about sex? It does sound like it's full of euphemisms for that.
Love the instrumentation and the lyrics. Nice one.
THE RIGHT STUFF Really chill. The horns at the start remind me of early Pendulum, though obviously a lot slower as that's a drum 'n bass group. It's more the way they sound and how they blend in.
It took me a few listens but I like this now. Reminds me of a sunny day. Good guitar solo, and is that the infamous bass clarinet? Also the sax is back.
THE MEXICAN Hello cowbells. I hated this when I first heard it yesterday. I listened to it twice and I know this will be the one I'll be skipping a lot.
I don't like the lyrics and the wahwahwahwahs, I don't like the bluesy guitar bits throughout. I do like the riffs though, they are catchy.
LOCK ALL THE DOORS Hello Oasis. I like what Noel has done with it. Sounds great, catchy. Really in the vein of Morning Glory. One of my favourites on the album.
YOU KNOW WE CAN'T GO BACK I like this. It's nice and happy sounding, and it sounds, like everyone has said already, like something from the Be Here Now era. It also sounds a bit U2-ish and Springsteen-ish. Would be a nice single maybe. But what do I know.
WHILE THE SONG REMAINS THE SAME Listened to this twice and I know I like it, but for the life of me, I can't remember a lot about it, except that you expect the chords to go like SB&JF or Falling Down, but they change after two chords. I like it, but it seems to not have much of an effect on me, otherwise I would have been able to remember more.
THE DYING OF THE LIGHT Wow. Many of you know I hated the soundcheck version. A whiny NG ballad. The 36th rehash of Wonderwall. Boring. Yawn.
And then the album leaked, and this was the first one I listened to. I expected it to have gotten the EOTR and IIHAG treatment: plodding, with strings and a cheesy sounding choir. Thank God it doesn't. It's amazing and my favourite on the album. It gives me major goosebumps and actually makes me wanna cry, a pun I already made yesterday, and which is the worst pun I've ever made. It's so full of emotion, the lyrics are beautiful, the sounds in the background are mysterious. Just wow. Beautiful.
BALLAD OF THE MIGHTY I Already gave my opinion on this one. I think it's a great closer and a good song. Love Johnny Marr's work on it, good lyrics. Love the atmosphere of the song.
All in all, this is a great album. Very different from HFB1, but way more varied. Even though the leak wasn't fantastic HD quality, it sounded better than HFB in fantastic HD quality. It sounds as if Noel came a long way from Heathen Chemistry, in terms of producing. The drums sound great too. My only complaint is that Joy Rose's voice is too loud on The Right Stuff, and that I hoped that some of the songs would explode more. Lyrically, it's really good for a Noel album.
Well done Claus.

Too early to give a rating, but fucking hell....this will be in the stereo playlist for a while.

Hi All,
I've heard it on youtube and thought I would add my two pence worth. I'm pretty boring when it comes to my music taste. I love 99% of Noels solo and oasis songs with the Be here now and HFB1 eras being my favourite, I like some of DGSS other than that theres only a few other bands I listen too - and normally its only these other bands singles, Cast, Phonics, Manics, Green Day, The who, the jam, the kinks and the beatles. Apart from a bit of blues music ie SRV, hendrix and gary moore (I'm a guitar player) I haven't got a varied taste in music. I thought HFB1 album was amazing. Every song on there was pretty much what I want to hear in a song but I'm sitting here thinking 'wow' when I hear BOTMI and the right stuff - music which I wouldn't normal bother with.
Riverman Cool as hell. Amazing guitar playing. I love the 'in a little whillllleeeeeeee she'll be gone' and the little background vocal fills. Plus a saxophone, it sounds great - I bet Noel could even make a didgeridoo sound cool. One of Noels best vocal deliveries ever.
ITHOTM Same as the rest of you I'm not fond of the NAHs but I love the song other than this. Noel by numbers and should be great live. Not the best on the album but not because its a poor song
The girl with xray eyes. Feeling the Bowie/masterplan vibe that you all have mentioned. Again not my favourite on the album but its the one that I always find myself singing in my head. This one is going to be a grower on me. Great production.
Lock all the doors Sit in the car, turn up the volume, punch the air.... this is amazing. Its like Alive with a My big mouth wall of sound. I could hear Liam singing this but take nothing away from Noel he does a great vocal job...... so far my favourite
TDOTL Wow. Wow. Wow. I thought he couldn't top the soundcheck version. Simply ..... Wow
The right stuff I shouldn't like this ..... I feel guity for loving it ..... but I do. I've got the infectious harmony vocals stuck in my head and when Noel joins in its a punch in the air moment in the same kind of emotional feeling as 'cant give me a reason, I don't need one to shine.' Its amazing.
WTSRTS This just flows nicely without going anywhere. Would it be better with a massive chorus? I dont think so. It reminds me of a 80s or early 90's track but I haven't got a clue what is it. Possibly by the Cure or Smiths. Would fit nicely on the local radio station. The build up for the solo is amazing, this part reminds me of the end of 'The Angry Mob' by the kaiser chiefs. Love it.
The Mexican My least favourite on the album. Can't stand the na na bit and the 'kid on crack' is cringe worthy. However it is growing on me and the last chorus (at 2 mins plus) is actually one of the best parts on the album. Think this will be a bit of a SOTWB - ok on the album but comes to life when played live.
WTSRTS This is what BE tried to achieve and failed with 'Iz Rite'. A feel good brit pop anthem that feels like its been around for years. Should be a single. It hasn't got the normal standout chorus but it doesn't need it. Great guitar solo. Love it - Reminds me of a better version of Ashes by Embrace
WTSRTS - BOTMI The transition between these songs needs its own post. The piano that blends these tracks together is the work of pure genius - great work Noel
BOTMI Fits in well with the album and gets better with each listen, even though I thought it was great first time I heard it. Not the stuff I would normally listen to.
At this moment I prefer this album from HFB1 but theres no stand out choruses, no stand out single just an amazing flowing album which Noel should be proud of. WTSMG and BHN represent the teenage years of my life so are always standout albums. But I think this album fits nicely in top 3 albums ever.
What song does 'While The Song Remains the Same' remind you of?

BOTMI 2/10... I still dont rate this one. Pastiche, tired melody and vocals, shitty remake of What a life. What the hell. When the guitar kicks in before the chorus, that's one of the worst moments in rock n roll. EVER. What a shit sound. Make my whole body cringe. Overreaction much? I thinks it's really great. Fits perfectly.

It is amazing that after pining away for those songs (Record Machine and Stop The Clocks) for years. I rarely listen to either of them. When they leaked back in 2008 the demos were good but nothing as earth shattering as Noel's comments about those tunes between 2002 and 2008. I was kinda disappointed after immense hype. Then they both ended up on HFB, which I didn't think Noel needed to do. I rarely listen to them off that album.

I'll be as direct as I can:
Riverman: Probably my favorite, love the solo, the sax and the atmosphere. The verses reminds a bit of the Turning which is one my fave as well. But imo it would better as an album closer.
ITHOTM: One of the weakest of the album but definitely a good first single choice. Still not a fan of the nananas but its a good tune.
The Girl With X-Ray Eyes: Nice little tune. It's like a cross between Part of The Queue with Broken Arrow and She Is Love maybe. Maybe it reminds too much of Hotel california, but it's a very nice little tune.
Lock All The Doors: For me it really sounds like a Be Here Now b-side. Not sure if its a good thing. Sounds like Step Out's big brother and I'd rather the latter.
The Dying Of The Light: Pretty much aced here. Production is top notch, love the piano a la Teotihuacan and the mellow guitar solo.
The Right Stuff: Very trip and nice to hear. I feel like it is what Get Off Your High Horse Lady should have been, like a nice trippy tune right in the middle. Didn't blow my mind but it's a good listen.
While The Song Remains The Same: Wow, loved it! Its like Soldier Boys And Jesus Freak older sister, more mature and lovely. Could also compare it to Part Of The Queue again, due to the drum patterns, but I love both.
The Mexican: I like the chorus, not so much the verses.
You Know You CAn't Go Back: I was hoping more for a ballad, but I think is to much dad rock. The 'its alright"'s and "love you to the end of times" feels a bit cliche for me...
Ballad Of The Mighty I: Again, not sure if its the best choice to close the album, but since the begining I love this tune. Great vocals, bit sad , bit happy.
I won't give any numbers cos the ones I'm seeing here are quite crazy, but It feels like a more happy and fast paced album, pretty sure it'll get better and better with time. It's too soon to tell but in IMO it might be better than the last one. It's always great to see NG penned tunes.

After having driven round town, blasting this album out to the masses, I have to say I love it just that little bit more.
Lock All The Doors, The Right Stuff, While The Song Remains The Same, The Mexican and You Know We Can't Go Back keep getting better and better.
The only song I'm not sold on is The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes. Apart from it's that pretty flawless.

It's interesting to see how some opinions differ from mine.
I really liked the album, I think it's as good as the first one, but it sounds more interesting and diverse. It's bolder and more experimental. The Right Stuff is great.
One of the things that annoyed me a little bit was the tracklist. I don't think it flows that well - specially the beginning. Actually, although I loved the song, I don't think Riverman is a great opener. The first half of the album seems to me like a roller coaster, full of ups and downs - not in a good way. Riverman is quite chilled and amazing, and gives you a mood of what the album will be that is completely breaked when Heat of the Moment comes up. The same happens from Girl with X-Ray Eyes to Lock All The Doors. The second half of the album flows better. I loved the transitions from song to song - Dying of the Light to The Right Stuff and You Know We Can't Go Back to Ballad of the Mighty I are the best, probably.
The funny thing is that 2 songs that a lot of people loved - Lock All the Doors and You Know We Can't Go Back - are definitely my least favorite.
The first one sounds weird, it sounds like early Oasis in a Noel Gallagher album. It's 47 year old singing a 25 year old's song. I don't know. The chorus is good, though. And it's not a song that suits Noel voice.
You Know We Can't Go Back it's The Killers meets Bruce Springsteen in a bad way. Way too poppy. Definitely my least favorite.
I loved what he did to Dying of the Light. I wasn't expecting too much, thought it would be a Noel Gallagher ballad by the numbers, with the same treatment given to IIHAG, for example - a pretty obvious ballad. I was completely surprised. It's moody, dark and beautiful. Great production.
I don't understand the hate for HOTM and Mexican. Mexican it's a groovy, trippy song. Really good. And Heat of the Moment is really well produced and has a great chorus. Also, although I wasn't a fan of Mighty I when I first listened to it, it's definitely a grower and the perfect ending for the album - epic and beautiful.
I'd give this album an 8/10.

Just my personal opinion - not my intention to cause a stir or to troll. I think it's a decent enough effort but I don't think it's anything extraordinary. It's pleasant but somehow middle of the road. DotL is a classic and I really like The Right Stuff but comparing the album as a whole to some of the classics feels a bit silly. I'm probably a victim of too high expectations so I'll see how I'll feel in time.

I've already posted my opinions on every single track so I'll keep it short and sweet:
Riverman: 10/10 Heat Of The Moment: 9/10 The Girl With X-Ray Eyes: 9.5/10 Lock All The Doors: 10/10 The Dying Of The Light: 10/10 The Right Stuff: 9/10 The Song Remains The Same: 9.5/10 The Mexican: 8.5/10 You Know We Can't Go Back: 9/10 Ballad Of The Mighty I: 10/10 --- Do The Damage: 8/10
I'm not usually one for numbering songs like that as I don't think its an accurate way of scoring music but as you can see I F**KING LOVE THIS ALBUM!!!
