Heard Riverman acoustically on Boxing Day. I must say that the crappy recordings really do not do it justice; it's an incredibly special song structurally and melodically. He said BOTMI was one of the best he's ever written but Riverman is the best I've heard from the album, although I do have a strange fondness for The Mexican in a fun sort of way. Go on…

You're really not all waiting on a lot. What have you heard from the album... In The Heat of the Moment, TBOMI, The Dying of the Light, Riverman, Lock All The Doors... what does that leave? Five songs?
From what I can remember, The Mexican is fun in a Dream On sort of way but I can scarcely remember it so nothing special. The Right Stuff really is a bit different... I think Noel described it as actual space jazz or some other obscure description but it obviously isn't. To call The Right Stuff 'space jazz' would be like saying Fuckin' in the Bushes is 70's rock'n roll. You can kinda get the reference but it really doesn't fly. It's a Noel Gallagher song done in a different way... remember when he said What a Life was dance? Yeah, that.
While the Song Remains the Same and You Know We Can't Go Back are two... I'd say, unique songs. The first is a piano led almost Noel-by-numbers song and the second is a guitar laden effort with (in my opinion) the best solo on the album. I don't know if he played it but whoever did really fucking nailed it.
I can't remember much else about the album. In my humble and basic opinion I found it very much a High Flying Birds part 2 album. The songs I guess are a little more intelligent in places but it really could've done with a Dave Sitek or someone in the production seat. Noel is so clever and has this real gift from God to write melodies, if he channeled it the right way it could be so interesting and beautiful. As it stands, he loves playing his acoustic guitar and going off the back of the Riverman I heard on Boxing Day there's really no one in the world better at doing what he does.
I just wish he would diversify a little, I guess.

bradhorse Thanks for that. Interesting. What about the album versions of Dying Of The Light and Lock All The Doors though?

But we haven't heard the final versions of Dying of the Light and Lock All The Doors (and I haven't heard Riverman, wanna listen to the final thing). Anything new on these songs? What about Girl with X-Ray Eyes? Some have said it's pretty good.

One thing I should have said was that I really like Noel's voice on the album. I've loved Noel's voice right from the beginning, so it's really no surprise, but he really does nail his vocal performance. This is all just going from memory of hearing the album once but I know some people were complaining that he sounded 'whiney' on the 'I'll find you' parts of Ballad. If that's not to your liking then you really won't like a lot of vocals on the album. I agree that Ballad isn't produced to the best degree (and in my opinion is unfinished in regards to chorus/lyrics) but the way he sings it is quite prevalent throughout the album.
The Mexican has that usual stomp-stomp beat you'd expect from a throwaway Noel song. Dying of the Light really wasn't changed much... to be honest I don't even know if a single lyric was changed from the demo we've all heard. I haven't listened to it in a while but when listening to the finished version I just remember thinking that I'd heard it before. The strings were nice enough, I suppose, but they really didn't add to or change the song much at all.
Honestly, in my sincere opinion, Riverman is the best on there. It's the first song on the album so maybe excitement got the best of me and I Just loved it but honestly I think it's right up there with the best songs he's done. The sax solos are almost straight from a Pink Floyd album and the entire feel of the song is just a funky, groovy, almost bluesy beat that coupled with the Noel Gallagher melody just works so well. This is what I mean in my last post about him trying to diversify - he's got such a gift for melody that if he brought it to other genres he could really smash it.
This is all I'm saying. I shouldn't have said what I have already but I drank some beer at the gig tonight and didn't stop once I got home. Fuck it.

Gotta be honest, you make the album sound a bit lackluster, bradhorse. I realize you probably didn't intend this.

This is what I love about music though; the appeal that certain songs have on people. bradhorse said that Riverman is the most impressive, and that he can't even remember some of the other songs he heard. But for me, I'm not entirely excited for Riverman as of right now but am really excited about some of the other songs like X-Ray Eyes and Lock All the Doors. These kind of reviews before the album comes out gets me so excited for when it actually is released! Thanks for the review bradhorse!

People really are so desperate for news that they just assume he's telling the truth without providing any kind of proof.

Here's hoping that review is fake. We didn't get any new information, not anything too specific or that couldn't be inferred from what we already know. Well, other than the space jazz comments about The Right Stuff. It seems off to me.
That may just be my bias kicking in though since it kind of bummed me out.

I don't know. Nothing says he's reliable, but nothing says he's unreliable either. We'll see within 3 weeks whether he was reliable or not, but from what I've heard so far, this album is definitely not HFB part 2.

His review is just too "neutral". It's basically the information Noel gave us but in another words and with some stuff thrown in. There's nothing personal, not even a feeling about the songs (apart from the suspicious Riverman comment).
I'm not saying it's a fake, but... I don't know. Hard to believe.

"I Hope, I Think, I Know" that what I read about it moving on from the '60s psychedelic approach of the first album to a more '70s and '80s one is true. BOTMI definitely screams that. We could always ask him a trick question like, "how does the closing track sound"?

So you're telling me Noel performed an acoustic version of Riverman somewhere the DAY AFTER Christmas and not a single media outlet picked up on it?
I'm calling bullshit.
