Noel likes to slag off everyone. This probably explains why there are no mirrors in Noel's house.

In other words, "Hey Jude" was and is complete kitsch, and "Paint It Black" has not been celebrated outside of the countercultural elite--never mind the "music community," which I assume now is the cultural elite(?). This. It seems to me that a fair number of Beatles tunes were intended to be kitsch. To your other point, I have yet to hear a rabid Beatles fan discuss the symphonic merits of "Paint it Black"--or anything off Aftermath for that matter. Cheers.

Just read this on the NME actually and one bit really wound me up, 'They’re a fucking great band but they're not great songwriters'.
Well why the fuck did you let them write half of Oasis' last three albums then?! That bit was an absolute slap in the face towards Andy Bell, and showed a bit of ignorance on Noel's part. With Ride, he was the primary songwriter and composer for the band (similar to how Noel was from DM-SOTSOG), and wrote many great songs that played a key part in representing a whole fucking movement, in the form of shoegaze. I understand Noel's outspoken, and does have some good views, but that I cannot agree with at all. Also, about the whole "no great song" problem that Noel said BDI had, I think he may be contradicting himself there. When The Roller was demoed in 2001, he was quoted as saying that it would be a "mega-hit" and "a fucking #1 single", and 10 years later, it finally made it on to an album, DGSS.

Noel Gallagher, the man out of ideas. Noel Gallagher, the man who wrote almost perfectly his part on Dig Out Your Soul, leaving Come On Outside, Record Machine and songs from HFB out of the record. Makes so much sense.

I think he did this because Gem and Andy showed interest in songwriting as opposed to Bonehead and Guigs. So, being in a band, which means collaborative effort, he 'let' them write songs for the records. I couldn't say if it was on purpose or not but it was also a great occasion to get rid of this crack whipping chief image he'd been carrying around from the day he joined Oasis. Yes but that 'dictatorship' so to speak gave us Definitely Maybe, Morning Glory and, not without its merits, Be Here Now. I know that's what Noel said in reply to the "accusations" of him being dictator but what I mean is, although he was certainly the leader and had a final say on what ended up on the album (to a certain degree anyway) I don't think he was as much of a dictator as his reputation says.

He's right. Plain and simple. And he was trying to keep the other guys motivated and involved. Really not that complicated.

To be honest, I've never seen a fall from grace in song craft like Andy. A few glimmers of hope but all in all, I still can't believe that one of the most innovative songwriters of the early 90s produced such derivative dirge for the large part for most of the last two decades.

I honestly think some of you are in dream land when it comes to Noe, he is a bundle of contradictions and prone to talking a bit of rubbish. He had nothing after Be Here Now and admitted there were two shit songs on SOTSOG. He claimed he was glad the others were writing as it took a bit of pressure off him for Heathen Chemistry and regardless of what the others contributed to HC the best he had to put on there included Probably All In The Mind, She Is Love and Force of Nature. On DBTT he contributed a couple of crackers. The others were decent and one was 5 years old. On DOYS he was much more consistent, a really great period for him especially as he wrote some of those in the studio. He has said more than once that the time passes for songs and yet there were two demoed for Oasis on the first record and one that is 20 years old going on this one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that but he does contradict himself from time to time. He might be prolific but I'm not sure if that means he is prolifically good. His output over a period with Oasis would suggest not. Some of you might say he had the songs but didn't put them out, well you can't judge the other contributors to Oasis when the main man is not putting his best songs on the record. I agree but as Noel has said himself, some of those albums did not have to be made. He should have waited til the songwriting bug hit him. I would rather have had much fewer Oasis albums but quality songs over more albums with mediocre songs. They chose the latter and they are all to blame for Oasis fall from grace.

I agree. The only song of which you can truly say "hey that's good" during his time in Oasis is Turn Up The Sun. The rest was either mediocre or shite. Such a shame, 'cause in Ride he wrote some cool stuff

Well don't make them then, oh I suppose he made them for everyone else's benefit. If Noel chose to not go into the studio to make an album then Oasis don't make an album. He pulled the plug on the DIV sessions because they didn't have the songs so he's obviously not scared to make these decisions. I simply don't believe he has the wealth of material a lot of you think. He advertises the fact that he does but that doesn't make it true but it could be because he held them back or they don't exist and that isn't the fault of the others contributing to an album. He used to imply he was the boss and over the last few years since the end of the band its felt to me like he's implied he bowed to other members and that it was a democracy. Its quite obvious what he's doing there.

As to your point, prolific doesn't have anything to do with quality.

Is kind of strange to say that, in the case of Liam, he really isn't a good songwritter and at the same time encourage him to make a solo effort. Thing is cata, I think he would be great with a quality co-writer. He can come up with really good melodies, it's just the execution that sometimes fails for him - a co-writer could maybe offer something that makes his tunes feel more complete.

LAG are not great songwriters they have written a few great songs but their general output is average to good. The main thing that makes Beady Eye decent is Liam's voice, I wouldn't bother with a lot of their songs if they had someone else singing them. Liam adds depth and a x factor that the songs alone don't have. Andy is too cheesy( keeping dreams alive and all the vomit inducing nonsense), Liam had a six year olds vocabulary range, and Gem pre-BE at least( I love 'Off At The Next Exit') couldn't write a decent melody to save his life.

I think it's all quite simple, really. 'The other three' never wrote a great song, at least in Oasis and Beady Eye (Songbird is good but it doesn't deserve to be on Stop The Clocks), and Noel wanted them to include songs on Heathen Chemistry both because it was good for the band's health and because he was in a creative slump. By the time his inspiration came back, it was probably too late to ask them to keep their songs to themselves.
And he made the mistake of choosing songs based on the 'sound' or 'mood' he wanted for the album instead or just picking the best ones, both when it comes to his own songs and the ones written by the other three. And that's how we got Dig Out Your Soul.

It was like a four-minute bridge with no chorus. Admitadly a good bridge". Actually we can say that for "Mighty I" too, why is so hard to him come and say, it's a good tune.

Hes right what he says theyre a great band but not great songwriters..theyve never penned what you would deem a classic and never will . They write good tunes and the odd great track but as full on songwriters no. Noel allowed them to write songs because after sotsog nole was running out of tunes and also they wanted the band to be just that a band and gem and andy both were songwriters in the past. When your needing to write 2/3 songs for an album its easy to filter the best tracks but when your having to write 10/15 each for the recording sessions its alot different , this is where it starts to wrong , although i do think the beady eye albums are great to listen to there isnt a classic on there , they were close with the roller but they just fall short.. Noel is not having a go he is being honest .Liam needs to record a solo album because i do think he has that in him
