Well "Follow Me Around" leaked earlier this morning before its 4 pm UK premier. Its been a long and winding road for this song to come out. 23 fucking years. Wow. The camps are divided, some prefer the acoustic take, some wanted the hard rock ending from 1998. I can see both sides. Ideally we would get both in this Kid A look back. Maybe in the video game? We shall see. I use to think this song would get revised for a new album. The 2017 version sounded like it could have been on A Moon Shaped Pool. I do believe that if “Follow Me Around” was going to make Amnesiac it needed another element to the song. There is a reason it never made Kid A, Amnesiac or Hail To The Thief. When these guys a song is stuck they move on for decades (Nude, True Love Waits, Lift, Man of War, Follow Me Around). That studio cut mightve worked on Amnesiac more than Kid A. But I might be wrong was the right choice as it was for that record.

This song had alot more potential and should've been released on a future record. The Jonny/Thom performance is great.

My quick hot take review of the “KID AMNESIAE“ bonus CD.
Like Spinning Plates ('Why Us' Version): An interesting hybrid of the beloved "I Might Be Wrong EP" live version and the studio version found on Amnesiac. I think Radiohead made the right call with what ended up on the actual album from 2001. At the end of the day we now have all 3 versions. A win for the fans!
Untitled v1: This is the music found in the "Kid A Mnesia" teaser trailer I believe. Also sounds like a piece of music we got on the White Cassette from OKNOTOK that features the "True Love Waits" loop.
Fog (Again Again Version): A real highlight from this release. Such an upbeat happy atmosphere on this version. I think I love every incarnation of this tune (The b-side, the live version and this new one). This is the type of song I expected to find on a "Kid A" boxset when Thom and Nigel first teased the idea in 2017.
If You Say the Word: The first "single" from this duel project. Probably the most fully formed and realized song on this bonus album. Shocking this song never popped up as a b-side during the "Amnesiac" run or for "Hail To The Thief" but I can see how Thom would feel this is the type of song he was no longer interested in creating. It is worth the 21 year wait.
Follow Me Around: Legion of Radiohead fans have been waiting for this song since it first appeared in the film "Meeting People Is Easy". I know it will quickly divide the fanbase over those who liked the full band ending compared to a Thom acoustic diddy. I can understand both camps but I'm just glad we finally got a studio attempt. Of course I wish we could have both versions because Jonny is absolutely shredding it on guitar in the film version at the conclusion. And to think he was at first reading a book on the side of the stage! Maybe this song could even pop up on a future Radiohead album because the version Thom and Jonny played in 2017 had a load of potential.
Pulk/Pull (True Love Waits Version): This song has no business being as good as it sounds on this release. I'm truly impressed. When the early whispers said it was basically "Pulk/Pull" with Thom singing "True Love Waits" over it, well I had my reservations. I always wanted a more straight forward "Kid A" attempt with spooky keyboard or synthesizers. Maybe that version still exists in the archives or upcoming game. Hopefully we get that video game Friday morning.
Untitled v2: A very quick soundscape instrumental. Don't have much thoughts on it. Ends before it goes anywhere.
The Morning Bell (In the Dark Version): A spare, stripped back and dreamy attempt at "Morning Bell". Think more lullaby nursery sounds than proper song. No real vocals.
Pyramid Strings: I'm hearing a lot of Jonny's score from "Bodysong" in this instrumental. Particularly the song "Moon Trills" which is fantastic in its own right.
Alt. Fast Track: This feels almost like a waste of a track. Too much like the b-side we've all had since 2001. Doesn't do much for me.
Untitled v3: Loads of harps flourishes looped over and over. Definitely part of the creation of "Motion Picture Soundtrack". Just wish it was a lot longer.
How to Disappear Into Strings: This is a beautiful composition. Doesn't need any vocals to elevate it. Plus that version is already on "Kid A"!!!! This is Jonny's coming out party as a real deal master of strings and scores. Let Jonny cook.

It’s so weird hearing Thom sing a straightforward rocker, especially knowing he’s written it with Jonny, one of the shining lights of contemporary orchestral film scoring.
It’s cool though. As much as I love Radiohead, I always wish they would let their hair down a bit and not worry about being conceptual and difficult all the time. It’s important for groups to move their sound on, but there’s no harm in taking inspiration from the past. In fact, it’s virtually impossible not to.
I’m excited to hear the rest of the album.

While I can applaud the return-to-rock vibe, IMO, it’s not a great tune. I’ve listened to it once and don’t feel any real urgency to listen again. Don’t hate it, but it’s just a bit forgettable.
I do love imagining Thom’s head wobbling like crazy when they play it live

6 years ago if you told me that an Oasis album (reissue or whatever) would beat a Yorke rating on Pitchfork I wouldn't have believed it. They got both reviews spot on this week. This is Yorke's most bland work yet. I think a 6 is a little generous to be honest. Faceless kinda MOR electronica as far as I'm concerned. His side projects and solo work are very hit and miss. Won't start worrying about him unless Radiohead make another disappointing album, which let's be honest probably won't happen. Kinda interesting to see that Yorke needs his bandmates a little more than Damon or Noel does at this point. He seems a little lost without them, kind of maunders around without them there to focus him. Damon is a master collaborator, that is his gift and niche. Noel like Yorke is playing it a little safe with regards to his music and sound but the difference is Noel is consistently writing good to great material. I respect Yorke for being brave enough to release his passion side projects. He could easily just sit on this material and never release this IDM album. We all know this type of album isn't for everyone but he puts it out anyways. Noel could learn something from that (i.e. AA sessions). Noel pussyfoots around too much. Guys like Albarn and Yorke do not. Both men love Bob Dylan and Neil Young. Only Thom had adopted the fuck all attitude and record/release what you want despite opinions.

Thom’s new song from tonight’s Peaky Blinders. He had a second song coming out the day of the series finale.

Will these Smile songs lead to an album or are those cheeky middle-class people being terribly modern about it all? The album has been done since late 2021. It’s just been hanging in limbo for release date. One of the big reasons guessed is the extreme vinyl production backlog. 6-8 months currently. Best case digital album by May 15. Vinyl in June.

Yeah. I’m definitely pushing all my chips in for a May 13 release. No way The Smile begin a 3 month Euro tour with no album to promote. Right? Right? Right? Right?!?

Album leaked about a week ago now and I can safely say this album is extremely strong and refreshing. It’s been a long long time since Thom/Jonny sounded this animated over a dozen tracks. Always find it ironic that the two guys in Radiohead most associated with pushing guitars away over the last 20 years basically made a smashing guitar record. Jonny’s playing is beautiful. He’s evolved so much since the early days of Radiohead.
My highlights are the phenomenal Anima style opener in “The Same”, the krautrock magic of “Thin Thing”, the lost Radiohead relic “Open The Floodgates”, the beautiful acoustic “Free In The Knowledge”, the spidery guitar led “A Hairdryer” and the rocking raver “We Don’t Know What Tomorrow Brings”. Honestly these are all fun listens. I still can’t believe they left “Just Eyes and Mouth” off the LP. Guess it was too similar to “Thin Thing” and “A Hairdryer”. Maybe they are saving that for the next Radiohead album. Which begs the question, why isn’t most of this album from a future Radiohead LP? Can’t wait for a future USA tour.

Beautiful. Beautiful album. Reminded me of Merrie Land (Good Bad & Queen) not in its sound, but in the way I reacted when I listened that album for the first time. A side project of a huge artist of which I didn't expect anything and it gave me such a wonderful experience. Its cohesive, refreshing and heart touching. Loved it to bits. I thought that they spoiled the album releasing 6 fucking singles. Oh boy did they save the better for the last. Speech Bubbles and Open The Floodgates have to be the most precious tracks I've heard this year. Haunting.

If you saw their Magazine round shows that were streamed in late January 2022, then you know all 14 songs they’ve got currently. Amazing that when they did a surprise out of nowhere band announcement and performance at Glasto 2021 that we’d have to wait an entire calendar year to get an album. I def thought material was imminent last summer.

Hot take: Outside of the obvious "Fitter Happier"/"Electioneering" duo, "Paranoid Android" is the worst song on OK Computer. It's the only track to continue the slightly alt-glam guitar vibe that ran through strains of The Bends, and I don't consider that to be a positive; leaving those cheesier guitar solos behind was a wise decision, for me. The album works much better with the more atmospheric, tasteful guitar sounds on songs like "Let Down", "The Tourist", "Airbag", etc... Plus, it's just a bit Muse, isn't it? Feels like a sweaty thirteen year old boy's idea of awesome, ambitious rawk! at times. I think that might replace "The King of Limbs is better than The Bends" as my most unpopular Radiohead opinion, ha. Anyway, ranking OK Computer:
GREAT: 1. Airbag 2. Let Down 3. Karma Police 4. Exit Music (For a Film) 5. No Surprises 6. Climbing Up the Walls 7. The Tourist 8. Lucky
GOOD: 9. Subterranean Homesick Blues 10. Paranoid Android
MEH: 11. Electioneering
Still one of the best guitar albums ever. Even "Electioneering" is just a bit teenager-reads-first-political-book in it's basic nature, nothing to dampen the fucking incredible melodies and production on the rest of the record.
