8 out of the 12 are Urban Hymns tracks? I don't want to be that guy but... Let alone the artwork. On so many levels. Oh well... I sincerely hope that even Nick feels some mercy and christian charity at this point. Apart from feeling some mercy and christian charity, does Nick feel bold enough to release new music? ... Richard Ashcroft presents his new album Acoustic Hymns Vol. 1. The album features twelve newly recorded acoustic versions of classic songs from his back catalogue spanning both his solo career and his time with The Verve. The album finds Ashcroft's acoustic performances supported by a full band, which brings a lighter touch to songs that originally had a heftier sound such as his debut solo single "A Song For The Lovers" or "C'mon People (We're Making It Now)." His renowned vocal has gained poise as his career has progressed, giving an added emotional resonance to his most poignant songwriting on "The Drugs Don't Work" or "Sonnet." Much of the material that features is drawn from the classic Urban Hymns, an album that Ashcroft and The Verve commenced recording sessions for 25 years ago this October.

Lennon’s was amazing, Ashcroft managed to make both the video and song super corny He has a rather uncanny knack now-a-days for this unfortunatley

Every ambient work Nick's willingly put out post Black Sub has been great - I still do not understand the hold up. If he's worried about money plenty will gladly purchase those EPs/albums.

Cassettes are extreme novelty to me. Sure I own some of the recent ones but they flat out don’t sound good overall once played. They are the lowest fidelity and could be so easy to damage them. I don't remember the last time I bought one, it was in the 90's. To me it was a format to share music but like you said, listen once and then go to look for it on a cd.

Oohh, love the idea of Cmon People featuring Liam. Brillant song from a great album.
Kind of a shame to see Richard go for so many Urban Hymns tracks when his solo work includes enough strong songs to make things a bit more interesting. Nothing from Human Conditions? Oh well.

Quite curious how much you will hear Liam on Cmon people. Super excited to hear sonnet, probably my favourite Ashcroft song

Anyone else think he might be short of a few quid with this release? I think it's the moment when you can call the act that does such a thing creatively bankrupt. Literally no ideas apart from doing covers of his own songs. Might as well call it a day, he's done nothing of note since Urban Hymns when a rare purple patch went to his ego and he thought he was a genius. He's a covid sceptic knobhead these days with nothing to say. What we have here now is literally something Barry Manilow would do.

If you watch his Radio X interview he's non committal to his Fall/Autumn gigs as well. Yikes. Forth material was something of note and could've been much more if he didn't go diva. At this point, it's crazy how he's still out here pedaling Urban Hymns 24 years later and not moreso embracing his solo output that at least has a handful of solid tracks.

Sounds nice but also boring somehow. Something is missing. No passion no energy. Just my first impression..

Urban Hymns is one of my favourite albums, but I'm not desperate for an acoustic version. Sadly Nick's needed to make the Verve click, and as you said Richard's been living off his purple patch for over two decades. He would have more success getting the band back together and releasing some of the demos from Urban Hymns!

Not sure I really get the boycotting venues that ask for proof of vacc. Whether you ultimately agree with it or not it's going to be a pretty much universal policy going forward and you are just cutting yourself off from your audience. Good for them for standing up for what they believe I suppose but doubt itll have any effect on policy. I doubt LG really agrees with it but it's up to the organiser/venue to make those decisions based on what they feel is safe or imposed by legislation. I glad Liam doing what he needs to in order to get back on stage.

Verve hade two great indie albums. And one stone cold classic. Ashcroft’s solo work is just awful. Sure. Each record has a tune or two I like. But the issue is all of his solo songs are 4 chord plodders. They are boring and his lyrics are all sort of referring to his wife or drugs. Again. Boring.
And honestly this version of BSS is also…..bland and boring. For a guy who has all kinds of attitude his music is MOR - and poor quality MOR.
He needed to find songwriters like Liam. Put out a decent record and tour a hybrid of verve and originals. But his time has passed. And now he rehashes 1 record (really 5 songs) endlessly. Over and over and over. And now he is bragging Liam is on his record. Another desperate attempt to hitch to liam’s renaissance.

Sounds nice but also boring somehow. Something is missing. No passion no energy. Just my first impression.. I definitely loved this idea when he floated it a couple years back. Richard can really bring it acoustically. I agree that this version is low gear to me. It definitely needs a bit more urgency as it goes along. Where is the burning passion and fire?
