I've listened to Forth today, and then I remembered why I never listen to it: it's a shit album.

The Forth sessions were the best collection of material he's done since Urban Hymns. Is there a bootleg with more songs on it? Because the album is pretty dull - despite Nick's involvement. Much worse than "Alone with Everybody" or "Natural Rebel" imho. Noel is a more talented songwriter than Richard. I'd say Richard is the better lyricist, but when it comes to designing melodies, Noel is King and it showed throughout the 90s. HFB > Richard solo my guy. Noel wrote every hit and every album for Oasis in the 90s and most of the best material from the 2000s. Beady Eye's demise was never more clear as HFB has thrived. Noel wrote much better songs after his heyday than Richard (the last four Oasis albums all contain some great tunes), but the last two HFB albums are really shite. He probably needs someone around who dares to express his opinion and not just an army of stooges.

Not just critically (his last album very well received as opposed to the pile of one star reviews Ashcroft is used to), but commercially too. You can have a personal opinion on Noel’s output but to put in on a par with crap like Natural Rebel? General consensus is nothing like that. Let’s not try to present RA as some sort of left field misunderstood genius either. Ashcroft is just fucking dull as dishwater beyond belief - add saccharine strings and sixth form poetry like, oh I don’t know, ‘my love for you is an enteral spring’ and you’ve got yourself an Ashcroft tune.

Have a listen to this unreleased beauty from the Forth sessions. Just puzzling that they left it off. There's also this playlist, All Night Long is brilliant as well:

That's How Strong is the biggest offender this album cycle. He tries so hard on that one to be some sort of classic love songwriter and it is cringe. Richard's love songs are anemic and incredibly boring. I love Applachian Springs on Forth even with the dodgy lyrics - but him not singing about his wife for once and about himself reflecting on life was refreshing. Nick mentioned in articles during the UH reissue media circuit Richard pulled back a bit during Forth and was hesitant.

But Noel’s solo success says otherwise? He sells his music under the Gallagher moniker, just like Liam is doing now and BE should have done... ]Not just critically (his last album very well received as opposed to the pile of one star reviews Ashcroft is used to), but commercially too. Noel's output is crap compared to a good album like "Natural Rebel" asimarx Thanks. Some of them are really good. Makes the album look even poorer^^

On a side note, Jalfrezi, a song that was (very apparently) leaked by McCabe himself, along with the other Urban Hymns outtakes in 2017 has become one of my favourite songs from that era. Great tune.

It's a shame that a whole additional CD (with some brilliant tracks!) got scrapped because RA didn't give his permission...

A Northern Soul is finishing up in my deck as I type this, found it at a local shop on CD for $2. I really enjoyed it! Going to keep my eyes open for Urban Hymns, will probably be adding that one to my collection next. 👍

Ashcroft said "it's a shame that this record got no autograph on it yet" when he signed on my copy of Urban Hymns 9 years ago.

It was UH + solo stuff only but he put on a great show Although I was kinda hoping he'd play On Your Own which is one of my favourites. Also his guitarist, while he seemed like a nice guy (black dude with dreadlocks), he was doing this guitar wanking stuff as opposed to Nick's more subtle, shoegaze-y style. But I don't think many people cared about that too much. It was nice to see younger fans too, it was kinda mixed crowd and people seemed to enjoy. Some lads next to me were constantly putting their arms around my shoulders wanting to sing along Usually timed my piss/beer breaks during his new album stuff which worked well so I wouldn't have to queue when he's playing something I like

Everybody can sue me:D I appreciate the wanking here...

I definitely liked their guitarist but the problem is that I'm a huge fan of McCabe's style I wish I could hear something like this live...

Love the way he mixes the chords with the slide leads. A moment in time though. It won't be back

Unsure if this is the right place to post this but a friend had to back out last minute due to the early birth of his child so I have an additional standing ticket for this coming Saturday's Richard Ashcroft concert at London Olympia, 4th May 2019. Face value was £57. Will take best offer. Can mail next day delivery or exchange for cash in person on the day of the show. Send a message privately. Thanks!

I was there too, thought it was a really good gig, much better than when I last saw him a couple of years ago in Glasgow. Pity I had this pished annoying weegie in front of me though.

I love Forth, for all it's faults.
Noise Epic is great.
Ashcroft's early solo stuff is excellent. There's no denying the purple patch he went through from 95-97 when he wrote the vast majority of Urban Hymns and most of his best solo tracks.
I liked These People overall but Natural Rebel is crap.

I'm listening to Forth right now for the first time in ages. I remember loving Rather Be and some B-sides back when it was released, but I'm ejoying it now more as a whole. Judas is superb.

I loved Forth at the time, only revisited it again the other week. When it first came out, we had the radio on in the office and Love is Noise and Sit and Wonder got some good air time. Judas is a cracking song as well. Big fan of all Verve/Ashcroft’s albums, I even like the RPA and The United Nations of Sound, sure only Are You Ready was released as a single on that album, thought they had a few more singles that could have been singles.

I hated it on first listen but Love Is Noise is a fantastic song, and by far the greatest thing Ashcroft has written on his own since Urban Hymns.
