"Money Money" is completely different from the rest of the album. Very rocky! Love it!

Downloaded. I'm at work now but I will smoke a spliff while listening to it later and then come back to share my thoughts

The Independent: 2/5 'For a 10-track album, it feels hideously overindulgent – only two songs fall under the four-minute mark, and those still feel drawn out by plodding, bog-standard riffs'
loudandquiet.com: 3/10 'Natural Rebel’ is clearly not an album written for other bands to hear and fear. Instead, it’s a record in love with its own reflection'

telegraph: "Natural Rebel, Richard Ashcroft, review: a return to the heartfelt intensity of The Verve" 3/5 I dont think this reviewer has heard The Verve before lol That's really harsh. This album in comparison to A Northern Soul (or Storm in Heaven and the earlier singles) sounds like Musak to The Velvet Underground's first album. I've heard a few albums in my lifetime but how can professionally produced music possibly become more generic than this? The songwriting (let alone the lyrics) is shockingly bad and the static, flat and compressed production even manages to make it worse. Uggghhh. Another thing that bugged me is that 'Birds Fly' actually is the leaked Urban Hymns demo 'Don't You Wan't Me'. And the 64kbps MP3-rip from an analogue, third generation demotape that I keep, still sounds a lot more alive and listenable.

"No doubt, other fans will defend this album and like it, which is totally fine with me, but I honestly don't have any urge to hear this album again. If you like MOR Dad Rock and lyrically safe, insipid ballads, then this might be for you" Insipid ballads! YES! have not heard yet but judging by the reviews posted here this album seems totally polarizing at best.

Q Magazine 8/10
Q MAGAZINE: “Ex-Verve man delivers best LP in years. This is easily the strongest set of tunes he’s put out this millennium…a fine addition to Richard Ashcroft’s hand”
Mojo 8/10
MOJO: ‘He’s undeniably reaquired his mojo lately…any heart that ongoingly swells for Lucky Man’s smouldering anthemics may actually burst for Natural Rebel.’

Horrible album. Makes These People sound like a masterpiece which had at least They Don't Own Me (not a great song but enjoyable). Really hope there will be a The Verve reunion some day again.

rwffmusic 7,8/10 "Those who have kept the faith are rewarded here with one of Ashcroft’s most essential solo albums, a record that has much to offer for those with an ear for finely crafted guitar music. Middle of the road much of it may be, but it’s a musical zone where Richard Ashcroft thrives on doing what comes naturally. A return to form that has been due for a while."

After my big disappointment with his last album, I wasn't bothered to pre-order this album. I'll listen to it on spotify later today and will see if I gonna get my copy.

Clashmusic.com: 4/10 'It feels staid, played out, and more than a little boring; despite Ashcroft’s pleas for energy, it feels absolutely zonked out, the wire-thin production helmed by the songwriter himself.'
Musikexpress.de: 1.5/5

This album seems to be a 50/50 split, I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, but it seems very divisive.

Very boring. Has no balls. I was tired at the 4th song. The songs are uninteresting and way too repetitive. What was the point on having Surprised By The Joy for almost 6 minutes? The singles didn't grab my ear at all but I was hoping to see at least 2 or 3 songs shining. 3/10 for me.

Its nowhere near as bad as some people are making out. It was ok on first listen. About to listen again. Not writing off an RA album that easily. Maybe it's a grower.

I'd love to be able to defend this album but it's pretty bland.
