Finally got around to actually listening to Born to be Strangers and it feels very David Brent. For some reason it also kind of reminds me, weirdly, of Devil Woman by Cliff Richard- I think it’s just the drum loop/beat. I was listening to “She’s A Superstar” the other day. Realizing how far off Richard is from his early sounds. Shows you how important Nick McCabe was to the sound, how underrated his contribution to The Verve and to Ashcroft songs on Urban Hymns. Richard for me, is one of those musicians who burned bright for a short time then now the spark is gone. His music doesn't offend me, but he's getting by cause on his Verve day's. All this concert reviews are on based on him playing his Verve stuff, when was anyone really blown away by his solo stuff. To be fair, I always dislike old Rock stars trying to act like their still in 20's. Grow old gracefully Richard, it suit you better. The quote he said about 90% of rock music is crap these days, I hope he meant himself as well.

Out of these 3 songs only the second one left a positive impression in me. and it was because of the instrumental breaks, when the song seems to pick up in pace it's suddenly faded out.

Who the fuck is producing Richard these days? He hasn't put out a good-sounding track since Forth. Those cheap strings and drums, ugh.

Positive review from the Italian media Il Fatto Quotidiano:
"Former Verve leader is back in great shape with an intriguing and vital album."

He had a purple patch in the mid-90s when he could carry a tune himself. But everything after Urban Hymns has been the epitome of bland. How in gods name he thinks this tripe is better than The Verve is beyond me.

I've just listened to the album. Don't bother, very bland and forgettable.

Even then, though, it's like looking at the light of a star you know died a long time ago. I agree about 'TDOM', and that is actually one of my favourite tunes by Richard, despite the rest of 'These People' being just 'ok'. Below is a quick little review I wrote for another forum. The only thing that pleasantly surprised me is the track 'Birds Fly', which is a reworking of the Verve demo 'Don't You Want Me'. Overall though, the album is very monotonous, bland and often cringey. The opener 'All My Dreams' is very David Brentesque. I think it probably has the most boring production of all his albums, with no real creativity and lacking that rich and mesmerising sound of 'Human Conditions', for example. I think this is the first time I've actually got bored listening to Richard's voice. No doubt, other fans will defend this album and like it, which is totally fine with me, but I honestly don't have any urge to hear this album again. If you like MOR Dad Rock and lyrically safe, insipid ballads, then this might be for you

I do think with Ashcroft it's a case of making millions, getting married and having kids has effected the sound, he's got comfortable. The best stuff Ashcroft did when he was dumped, on the drugs and miserable. Also as i said before when he had the band's real genius beside in Nick McCabe adding a bit of steel to those Urban Hymns songs also helped. Ashcroft doesn't get the hate from me cause he produced one of my favorite albums of my lifetime. But he hasn't produced anything really great since his debut solo album which was solid at best.

The new album has really good songs. Don't let anybody tell what to do. Listen to it and decide yourselves if it's a good record or not.

I'm not telling anyone what to do, I've stated it's my opinion. If you think it has really good songs, then I'm happy for you. Unfortunately, to my ears it's garbage.
