Never liked them, cannot stand Pete Doherty, a truly reprehensible character.
I think their guitar sound is dull, and Doherty can't sing IMO - when you compare them with another Rough Trade band, The Smiths, then the stark contrast is incredible.

Now now, let's not compare the Libertines to the Smiths. It is unfair to both of them.

But still, there is something about Libs that AM dont have. Something that Oasis also have. Those bigger than life songs but i dont think that can understand someone who is not fan. Remember last reunion and when Tell The King started. There was something in the air, crowd went mental. You can feel youth and great times and drugs and love in there songs. AM are good, very good but nothing more. They dont have that x factor. I am fan of AM but im not obsessed with them and i dont think that there are many people that are. They have many fans but not much that crazy fans with tatoos of the band and everything. Mardy Bum trumps anything the Libertines did, in that respect. And 'Dancefloor' too. And they're still doing it, 5 very different albums to their name. Still releasing great tracks that just stick, Do I Wanna Know is a masterpiece, seems to get better everytime I hear it. And Arctic Monkeys have plenty of those fans, have you seen the moss pit at a Monkeys gig? Fucking crazy man.

just to keep the insanity going.....i don't really like the Smiths.
i like 'please, please, please let me get what i want', 'panic' and 'there is a light that never goes out' and that's about it. don't really care for Morrissey's voice but i do think they're a really talented band, just not for me.
Thanks.

Thats what they remind me of though, like a bad mix of The Smiths and The Sex Pistols, both bands which i love too, but the Libertines are just lacking in something for me, well lacking in quite a lot to be honest.

They are a good band but they aren't that amazing. They are "the" NME band/British Press over hyped band of the century. Both albums are good, their first one is close to being great. But let's be real, The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys have better albums. Time For Heroes is a superb song and without a doubt their best song. Really like the first side of Up the Bracket with Vertigo, Horrowshow, Boys In the Band, all great songs, but it does kinda lose steam. I love their energy and their lyrics, but they aren't supremely gifted at crafting melodies in my opinion.. They were overhyped when they were a band and their legacy is overhyped. British press, ugh just really horrible in shoving bands in your face. They are decent and they are a fun band to listen to from time to time but they aren't saviors of rock n' roll. I really really hate this too - NME are so guilty of this. NME are also guilty of shoving Brother in our faces. They were fantastic...

Anybody who says the Libertines don't have the songs has obviously never listened to Up The Bracket. Sure, no reason to hype them like they were the next Oasis, but they are still better than 99% of the indie rock stuff that started around 2006, including Arctic Monkeys in my humble opinion. Cheers. Sorry mate but thats just absolutely laughable, it really is. Even more ludicrous than the dick heads who rate Wacko Jacko above the King. Each to their own though and all that, I just find in hard to believe people seriously think that way. Must be tone fucking deaf, thats all i can assume. Yeah, either that, or different tastes do exist. I like Arctic Monkeys (Mardy Bum and A Certain Romance would probably be in my top ten list of 2000s songs), I just like the Libertines even more, nobody has to agree. I don't see the problem.

When you someone compare The Libertines to The smiths you know you are in trouble.

When the Libertines ever release anything as great as London Calling and when Doherty is ever as cool as Joe Strummer then we'll talk.

If someone had sloopy drunken sex with an ex. I could see them putting on Music When the Lights Go Out. That is a great song by them as well if they ever evolved/continued as a band I think that style of a song would've suited them well going forward.

Never understood why Arctic Monkeys fans usually doesn't like The Libertines.
AM kind of picked up where The Libertines left off, both sounds similar in a way, I, and many others I guess, always saw AM as the next Libertines.

I believe that most people here like both bands. Always hated those little wars, who is better, blah blah. Like Beatles or Stones. Beatles or Stones? Beatles and Stones man, best combination ever.

I didn't want to sound disrespectful. They are all right. I just haven't listened to their albums since the last reunion Get Along is a classic though. might be the right time to listen to them again.

Excuse me I'm not a troll. look at the other threads I wrote here and it says otherwise buddy. I just dislike this legend that's been build around Doherty and his cohorts, one half decent album doesn't warrant them headlining Hyde Park or been held up as important act like The smiths.

It's more the legend that's build around Doherty that I can't abide, Turner has proved that he's willing to change and hasn't depended on one half decent album to build the legend like Doherty and Barat, plus why are we hero worshipping a guy who pissed what ever talent he had up the wall by taking a dangerous drug and calling him a hero.
Nothing to do with the Arctic Monkeys why I hate the Libertines.
