BE followed by AM I 'd say. Don't listen to much new music. Travis? Do they still exist?

Forgot about the Johnny Marr record, it's really quite good. Especially "New Town Velocity" and "The Messenger". Fantastic stuff.

I was going to wait until December to do this but I think it is pretty safe this late into the year. No big releases left before the calendar flips to 2014. The year went by extremely fast in my opinion. Crazy. Ok, here we go.......................................... Top 10 Albums
01. Arcade Fire - Reflektor (A band in their absolute prime, always pushing their sound further) 02. The National - Trouble Will Find Me (The most consistent American band going these days. They sing for the working man) 03. Atoms For Peace - Amok (Thom Yorke's supergroup walks the walk) 04. Arctic Monkeys - AM (I was extremely impressed with this album's production and lyrics. Great job Alex Turner & company) 05. David Bowie - The Next Day (Bowie back with vengeance after an extended hiatus) 06. Deerhunter - Monomania (Another great, lo-fi album from the American indie scene) 07. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City (I was down on their last album but this one's production was through the roof) 08. Queens of The Stone Age - ...Like Clockwork (Was never into this band before, friends kept pushing this LP, they were right!) 09. Cut Copy - Free Your Mind (The Hacienda is alive on this record. Noel Gallagher will love it) 10. Foxygen - We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace and Magic (The sounds of a great Wes Anderson movie not yet made) Top 10 Songs (I'll name only 1 per group/artist)
01. Arcade Fire - Afterlife (Arcade Fire embrace their inner New Order) 02. Arctic Monkeys - Do I Wanna Know? 03. Atoms For Peace - Ingenue (A very sexy tune) 04. The National - Sea of Love 05. Beady Eye - Flick of The Finger (Probably the best track Beady Eye have created yet! This song has swagger) 06. David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight) 07. Vampire Weekend - Diane Young (Love all the different vocal tics and delivery in this track) 08. Queens of The Stone Age - If I Had A Tail (Reminds me of a David Bowie song) 09. Sigur Ros - Rafstraumur (Few bands do anthemic tunes better than Sigur Ros) 10. Daft Punk - Get Lucky (A song that will be played at every club & wedding until the end of time) you should write for a music magazine/site. God bless.

Candidates for best album (in approximate order, i'd probably change it nominally every time i thought of it) Sigur Ros - Kveikur Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verse The National - Trouble Will Find Me Savages - Silence Yourself Reflektor? BE? probably not but im sure to listen to them both often enough that not including them seems weird
Some of the best tracks Sigur Ros - Brennistein/Rafstraumur Los Campesinos! - Avocado Baby Arcade Fire - Porno Frightened Rabbit - Nitrous Gas David Bowie - How Does the grass grow

The Travis album is excellent. My favourite band other than Oasis, it's been great having them back this year. I do like McCartneys new album and the 1975s debut was impressive. Other than that, I was impressed by Bowies return, I'm always gonna love anything The National do and I love the new Fratellis record. BE is nowhere near album of the year.

Incredibly enough it's BE because this was a miserable year for new music. 2012 was surprisingly good but that's only cuz everyone thought they were going to die in Dec. Silly Mayans! Worst album? So many choices but I'll go with Black Sabbath's reunion album cuz it's one of the few new albums I heard during the year and it was appallingly bad and an insult to both Bill Ward and us old Sabbath fans that they blew him out of the project.....good news for Bill in a way though cuz he didn't have to waste a year of his life recording that collection of turdburgers and then another year touring it. Odds that Ozzy will stay sober through it all? Nil. Zero. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Rehab here he comes! I thought this year was incredible strong with albums by Arcade Fire, The National, Johnny Marr, Sigur Ros, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Deerhunter, Queens of The Stone Age, My Bloody Valentine, Atoms For Peace, Flaming Lips, David Bowie, The Strokes, Kurt Vile, Jagwar Ma, Pearl Jam, Kings of Leon, Cut Copy and Beady Eye. Very strong material all around.

Okay, I wrote my above piece before I perused anyone's lists. You guys are all quite young aren't you? I've seen a few of the groups you guys go for on Saturday Night Live and I can tell you categorically they don't hold a candle to even the most mediocre of groups from the 60's and 70's. Arcade Fire struck me as bland bland bland & overblown and Vampire Weekend was one of the worst, wimpiest pieces of drivel I've ever heard. Hell, One Direction is as good as that. Now whether I'd feel this way if I were still 20 or a teenager is another question. In any event I grew up on my older sister's Beatles records so my musical education started right at the top of the food chain and I feel I can distinguish between shit and shine-ola. Shine-Ola would be Beatles 66-69' period and shit would be McCartney's latest solo Lp. Someone here raved about that one so I downloaded it illegally and man oh man was it bad. Really bad. Not one decent song. You get what you pay for I suppose. I mean you are name dropping some icons of rock n roll to compare to bands in 2013. That is not fair. So many prominent artists released records this year. Who exactly were you waiting for or wanted an album from? And for the record I'm 32. Most of the bands I mentioned are all in their 30s as well.

Lennon2217 I did hear Johnny Marr's album. Did nothing for me. I'm tough to please I suppose. 2012 shocked me. More stuff came out in 2012 that I liked than probably the previous 10 years combined. Tenacious D made half a good album, Jack White's solo debut, Neil & Crazy Horse, Killing Joke, Van Halen's reunion LP (Stay Frosty might be the best thing they've ever done and in terms of playing it blows pretty much everyone else in rock right out the window)and....and.....my mind's drawing a blank but there's 4 or 5 more. All old farts no doubt. I just remember there was enough to actually fill out a top 10 list whereas most years I'm lucky if I like even 1 album someone did. I'll admit I'm pushing 50 and I don't make much of an effort to find new music anymore. The internet age has opened a previously unknown can of worms......sites that specialise in records from the glory days (64 to 73) that I never even heard of and I used to be a total junkie for music in the 70's. All of it free! It's both terrible AND wonderful. Wonderful because of all the interesting and hopelessly obscure stuff you come across and terrible because the internet has destroyed the music industry. "Strange days indeed, most peculiar mama." Like your avatar pic. Lennon in 66'. The highwater mark. "Tomorrow Never Knows." Single greatest and most astonishing piece of music ever made. A total leap into the great unknown. God bless Lennon! Fair enough. I bet you'd like some of the albums I named if you had the time to give it a chance. Time is a luxury these days I get that. Harder and harder to find time as you grow older. "Now I am older The more that I see the less that I know for sure Now I am older The future is brighter and now is the hour"

32 eh? I'm too old for this place I'm sure. Anyone older than me around? I so miss the good old days. I live in So California, always have, and when Tower Records in Hollywood bit the dust it spoke volumes. I remember those glorious days when I was 13 and would ride my bike for miles both ways just to get my hands on the latest UFO album. LOVED record stores, the vibe of them, the smell of vinyl, record jackets.....there was just this whole organic sort of underground thing about them. It was all very romantic then. Lennon was still alive.....I could go on and on. Can you imagine how incredible it must have been to be a teenager in the 60's? Unreal. Imagine walking out of a record store with The White Album under your arm. A full 100 minutes of new Beatles music. Talk about one's cup running over. Rock n roll was KING back then I tell you. Now it's just entertainment option no 20 on the list but back then it was THE thing. Bigger than movies, TV, sports, literature. Everything really. I've become my parents now. LOL! Like I'm pining for the good old days when music was really music and Glen Miller and Perry Como ruled the airwaves etc. Fucking pathetic in a way but that's life. Time marches on and stuff gets left behind in the mist. Oh well, put on an old record, fire up a spliff and let the good times roll right? kalas is an old warrior poet on this forum. I think he has seen Zeppelin live (in the 70s) but I'm not sure.

Lennon2217 I really had tix for zep over America 80 man MSG floor then bonzo died band dissolved, biggest disappointment ever man On the upside I did see floyd perform the wall as my first concert ever in 80 or 81 at Nassau colliseum one of only 7 shows they ever played in USA for wall 4 in la 3 in Long Island ...so my misspent youth wasnt a total bust ..... The smiths as well , clash , , you know the bands man , only needed zep to die happy , Beatles never did it for me so no loss there ..only zep .

2013 has been a fantastic year for new music. Finally.
Here are the bands from the Class of 2013 that found their way to my iTunes.
Billy Clyro - Opposites
Arcade Fire - Reflektor
Yuck - Glow & Behold (Haven't give it a full listen yet)
Glasvegas - Later... When the TV Turns To Static (Haven't given it a full listen yet)
Los Campesinos - No Blues
The 1975 - The 1975
Swim Deep - Where The Heaven Are We
Missing Andy - Guerrilla Invasion Part 1 & 2 (Double Disc)
Frank Turner - Tape Deck Heart
Frightened Rabbit - Pedestrian Verses
Rizzle Kicks - Roaring 20s
Arctic Monkeys - AM
Beady Eye - BE
Can't pick my favorite from that last. I would like to highlight: (Biffy Clyro, Los Campesinos, The 1975, Missing Andy, & Frank Turner)
You cannot go wrong with that list. Not bad for being away for half the year, either. May 2014 be just as good
