I remember the first time I heard the Libertines 'What a Waster' back in 2003. I went out right then and bought the album. That's a special feeling

George Michael - Freedom I know, I know. When i was kid i was thinking, this song has so many good parts, not just, verse, chorus, verse, chorus.
Coldplay - Violet Hill I was into dance and rap music. I thought that rnr was thing of the past. I didnt know that there are still bands making this kind of music. I started to listen Oasis, Beatles...because of this song.
Oasis - Live Forever Well, after this song, that was it. There was no going back.
The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows I still cant believe that this song is from 1966. At the time i thought that all bands from 60s were sounding like Elvis, you know. This song still sounds modern to me.
Tame Impala - Elephant That was it. That was the sound that i was searching so long, way that modern band should sound. Even Oasis failed so many times to do this, to sound like Beatles but Beatles today, in 21.century. Fresh and modern. That solo is just perfect. Mix beetween dance and guitar music.

Radiohead. Reckoner. It's Weird Fishes for me from In Rainbows. Everything In Its Right Place in general, I think. I hardly get "blown away" by a song the first time I hear it. I remember seeing the video to 'Hate to Say I Told You So' from The Hives (anyone remembers them?) on TV in like 2001 and speechlessly thinking this might just be the best song ever recorded by anyone, which it obviously isn't. Heroes from Bowie Comes to my mind, All My Friends & Dance Yrself Clean from LCD Soundsystem for some reason, and hearing This Charming Man for the first was pretty game-changing for me as well, I guess.

'Blew Away' isn't the right phrase, but a few songs that 'very much impressed' me on first listen and had me wanting to play them over and over include:
'March of the Pigs' - Nine Inch Nails 'Come to Daddy' - Aphex Twin 'minipops 67 [120.2]' - Aphex Twin 'Just Like Heaven' - The Cure 'Idioteque' - Radiohead 'Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues' - Mclusky 'Fell In Love With a Girl' - The White Stripes 'Bagboy' - Pixies 'Planet of Sound' - Pixies 'Prayer to God' - Shellac 'I've Seen Footage' - Death Grips 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' - Nirvana 'Give It Away' - Red Hot Chili Peppers
Edit: 'Good Idea' - Sugar

There are hardly any songs that blow me away from the very first listen but Flick of the finger was one of them!

The Scientist - Coldplay This song got me into music and I still tear up every time Chris says "I'm going back to the start" and the electric guitar comes in - never again did Coldplay do a ballad this effecting and brilliant. Waterfall - The Stone Roses Utter pop perfection, like a lot of that album. Lucky Man - The Verve The best of their pop-styled music on Urban Hymns IMO, even if I do prefer A Northern Soul, this is enough of a band effort to not make me miss McCabe's otherworldly guitar Oasis - Half the World Away The song got me into Oasis and I think it's in my personal top 5 Oasis songs, one of my all-time favourites Videotape - Radiohead Broke my heart within 10 seconds, although these days I tend to prefer the Bonaroo version.

'Prayer to God' - Shellac To this very day the only Steve Albini written song I've ever heard. Big Black were on my list for years, but listening to shocking quality acoustic versions of Magic Pie recorded at some obscure czech radio station always got in the way. Anyway, totally agree. The perfect post-break up song, if another man was somehow involved. The lyrics just crack me up, amazingly spare and powerful production. Surely really really impressive on first listen. On this occasion I'd like to add Teen Age Riot from Sonic Youth to the list, it's a song composed (perhaps not intentionally) to blow people away.

An absolute classic in my book. 10 out 10 in the lyrics department - my sort of humour indeed. Pleasantly surprised someone else on this forum knows of it. You're a cool guy asimarx, aha. 'Dude Incredible' (by Shellac) was my song of the year last year. Again, great lyrics... It's all about social groups from the perspective of a monkey. I've yet too look too deep into Big Black's work but I'd definitely vouch for 'Kerosene' and 'Power of Independent Trucking'. If you end up liking the Shellac stuff, I'd absolutely recommend Mclusky, who I rate even higher. Brilliant band. Edit: Oh yeah, Shellac have a song called 'Copper' worth checking too. It's one of those songs that's very catchy but so short it has a tonne of replay value.

A Day In The Life by the Beatles. First heard it when I was really young. And then that huge musical orgasm. That blew my mind when I was a kid. That one sticks out, though there were probably more.
Time To Pretend and Electric Feel, both by MGMT. At the time I thought those songs were so strange, and I was fascinated by them.
Grace Kelly by Mika. It was so fresh at the time. Looking back now I fucking hate Mika.
Hmm what else? No idea. There are probably a shitload of songs that blew me away

Regarding Mclusky - back in the day one of my former school mates was a bit of a fan. He absolutely adored bands like Nickelback at the same time, so that kinda turned me off. But I really enjoyed that 'To Hell With Good Intentions' tune. I often read about them when there's talk of underrated bands in german music magazines. Also appreciate 'Just Like Heaven', this must be the most immediate and loveable song ever written (and I'm well acquainted with The Beatles and the Beach Boys). Absolutety everyone seems to love that number, you just can't escape those hauting melodies. Kinda like Don't Look Back In Anger. One more suggestion from my side: the ever underrated Doves with 'There Goes The Fear', it's an instant stunner as well.

No idea what's up with that Nickelback guy - the only band I could possibly compare Mclusky to is Shellac or maybe Pixies/Nirvana. Album 2 of 3 'Mclusky Do Dallas' is a classic. If you liked 'To Hell With Good Intentions', then 'Lightsaber Cocksucking Blues' is probably your next best bet. 'Just Like Heaven' might just be the best pop song ever.

Suitably impressed. I instantly recognised it, however I've only ever heard it as an instrumental before... probably from TV. Would listen again.

'Starts in Manchester, ends in Rio de Janeiro' as some journalist wrote at the time. I think it was song of the year in 2002 for most music publications, well, whatever that means.
