Regarding the exposure, I don't think that's why Beady Eye did it, but it's a nice plus.
The previous estimates indicated that the ceremony would be seen by some 750 million viewers worldwide.
Let's say that 0.005% of those people had heard from Oasis and learned for the first time that Liam had a new band. That's 3.75 million people.
From that people, let's say that 10% registered the band's name. That's 375,000. And let's say that 10% of those people decide to check out something about the band, a song in youtube or something, that's 37,500 new potential fans, for a band that sold 117,000 records in its first week.
It's all just pure speculation, but the point is, with such a massive audience worldwide, it's hard not to gain some fans.

Even my mum said "John Lennon on the screen singing Imagine, that was really something". Mum, I love you.

I was looking down Beady Eye's Facebook to try find a video of this live, only to notice some joker had commented 'Hey Guys, What Was That Song You Sang At The Olympic Closing Ceremony?'
I laughed

Alright then... After watching the thing live online, I watched it again when NBC finally decided to broadcast it(on primetime). I gotta say, the response on Twitter was so positive it truly made me proud to be a fan of Beady Eye, Liam, Noel and Oasis of course. Everyone kept posting how much they loved the song, how it was a truly all time great tune and so on...
Sure, a lot of people simply did not understand why Beady Eye was doing Oasis. In fact the most clueless tweet I read all night was from this 13 yr old girl that read "Nice cover by Beady Eye, it's a bit creepy that the singer looks and sounds a lot like the singer from Oasis". Who know, maybe she was being sarcastic, though i doubt it given her age and location. A bunch of people simply referred to the band as Oasis, a few people kept correcting the masses saying, it wasn't Oasis, it was Oasis minus Noel. Beady Eye trended basically all day and night, since NBC broadcasted the thing hours later on the West Coast. Time Zones FTL i know...
In any case, the praise for Liam and the song was such... I even read several posts saying how this was the highlight of the Closing Ceremony and "finally some real music", etc. As some of you may know, A lot of people flipped the channel to the Roseanne Roast right after Beady Eye, NBC cut to a commercial. Also, Muse was entirely cut out so that was nice to see lol.

Just listening to it on YouTube - the first time I've heard it since I saw it yesterday - and shivers are running down my spine.

Listened to it a few times today. There is something about this performance that makes it special, and I think its how cLiam is really trying to sing it to the best if his ability (not saying he doesnt normally, but the effort really comes through here)
The shot behind the band facing out to the stadium is stunning...

A moment about Oasis music I guess and only this (not the fight), about a huge anthemn and a great song. I wasn't expecting to see Liam sing it again until Oasis reform, it was special to see him doing that, so proudly. Beautifull moment for Oasis history. as for exposure, like someone said, 750 millions people knowing about BDI can't be bad exposure whatsoever.

I was going to say perhaps Liam should consider throat surgery? But I suppose it's not his throat... it's weird because he sings through his nose Roger Daltrey, Adele and other numerous artists had it done and they sound great.

I thought what made it special - apart from a great delivery and the fact that the arrangement was near identical to the record - was that it came DIRECTLY after the Spice Girls. Hear me out. Before we'd had all sorts of camp - Lennox, Octopuses, Spice Girl taxis, etc. For better or for worse, there's a place for that. And hear came Beady Eye, singing an all time classic song, relying solely on the singalong mood of the crowd and on the merits of the tune itself. No gimmicks, no fireworks. If I was feeling poetic I'd argue it was an oasis of calm in a madhouse.

it's not his throat. Like many have said, he seemed to really try last night. He was holding those notes and it sounded great(aside from the shaky start).
The highlight of the closing ceremony without a doubt

That's just the way he sings the soft songs these days. It's the only way he can get near the high notes. Listen to the Radio Aid performance a few years back, and it's very similar. If he tries to roar it out like he does with the electric guitar, then it just sounds messy. When he's singing along the acoustic guitar, he sings softly.

Just watched it again there. As said Liam was acting with pure class and dignity, no parkas, no flinging awards into the crowd. Just him and his band.
It's probably the hardest I've seen him try in a long time, not that I'm saying he doesn't usually, but he put every last bit of himself into that song. Is the vocals Maine road status? Of course not, but it's such a special and mesmerising performance. Just a sheer moment of clarity amongst the chaos of the ceremony.
People will accuse me using hyperbole here but I think it's one of the most defining moments of Liam's career.
Will be going on the iPod that's for sure.

I thought he nailed it and was surprised by the reaction elsewhere. Wonderwall is now 27 on itunes so that's something. WSTMG also at 34 on the album chart. Yeah, it should re-c hart in the UK and a 'few' other countries. Up to 21 now

Yeah, it should re-c hart in the UK and a 'few' other countries. Up to 21 now That's great. Isn't that higher than any of BDI/HFB singles has charted? Its a good effort when a song 17 years old can get that high when most songs like the manufactured rubbish from x factor gets "old" after a couple of months, just goes to show what a timeless classic it is

Something can be #21 on Itunes, but only chart at #58 on the actual published charts because the published charts are getting total sales and not just sales from one source such as Itunes. Also the length of time on Itunes also matter. If Wonderwall is only at #21 for a day, then it probably won't chart at that position on a published chart, it will chart much lower. On the main charts in the UK, TDOYAM charted at #15 and AKA....WAL charted at #20. Unless Wonderwall has a surge that lasts for more than a couple of days then I doubt it will chart higher than either of the two.

Pretty cringeworthy imo, Liam bein' the frontman to his own tribute band last nite! Any chance of Beady Eye standin' on their own feet instead on relyin' on Oasis songs. This is exactly the sort of thing Liam would slag other bands for. I've lost a lot of respect for Liam & his Beady Eye bandmates who seem to just toe the line with Liam.
