Can anybody recommend me some good Verve songs? I know most of the big ones (The Rolling People, This Is Music, Bittersweet Symphony etc.) but not much else as I've never gotten round to giving all of their albums a proper listen, bar Urban Hymns.
Really digging No Come Down at the moment.

Really digging No Come Down at the moment. Just listen to A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul. Both are absolutely killer, particularly the former IMO. A fifteen-or-so long playlist would be almost as long as listening those records anyway If you just need a quick fix, though: 1. Star Sail 2. Slide Away 3. History 4. Gravity Grave 5. Life's an Ocean 6. Blue 7. See in the Next One (Have a Good Time)

Nothing from their fourth album worth listening to then?

IMHO it's The Verve as good as it ever got. Absolutely solid performance but unfortunately it's not in HQ. :/

But maybe Richard will surprise us with his new album.

The Verve haven't produced a single 'bad' song IMO. Every album is unique and beautiful with the recognisable 'Verve' sound. It's worth looking up some lesser known, forgotten tunes once you've listened to the more popular ones. Dance On Your Bones (Reprise) Let The Damage Begin Feel Country Song Bitter Sweet Symphony (James Lavelle Remix) Blue Pacific Ocean All Night Long

I can't believe it was 9 years ago they reunited...2007 is 9 years ago. That is just incredible. Only feels like a few years, maybe 4.

Really digging No Come Down at the moment. Everyone putting amazing songs on their list. Kudos for Lennon2217 having No Knock On My Door on there - beyond underrated! Here's my list: (non-Urban Hymns tracks except b-sides, and the ones you already listened to) 1) A New Decade 2) Slide Away 3) Three Steps 4) On Your Own 5) Star Sail 6) Rather Be 7) Echo Bass 8) So It Goes 9) The Sun, The Sea 10) Gravity Grave 11) No Knock On My Door 12) Blue 13) History 14) Life's An Ocean 15) Stormy Clouds Here's some extra ones that didn't make the top 15 (keep in mind that isn't my personal top 15) that are very good bonuses You And Me The Longest Day Vallium Skies Sit And Wonder Let The Damage Begin

A Storm in Heaven > A Northern Soul > Morning Glory Just sayin'. Fucking hell i need to take math again! Here's how it should have read. A Northern Soul is just too good for me to rank it above ASIH. I do rank it in my Top 10 albums ever (unlike WTSMG ) As much as I love ASIH there are parts that can put me to sleep, especially on Virtual World. Meanwhile, we got beasts like: A New Decade This Is Music So It Goes Brainstorm Interlude No Knock On My Door (Reprise) that ROAR!

The grooves are harder, heavier, and more aggressive. Good ol' Owen Morris! However, for whatever reason, I prefer the weightless, freeform haze of ASIH over the direct, in-your-face, A Northern Soul. Maybe because it feels more spontaneous. And Virtual World is far from boring imo.

I love the flute in Virtual World. Just as perfect as the flute in Gas Panic.
My top 5 Verve songs...
Lucky Man She's a Superstar So It Goes History Rather Be
But they're a band I never get bored of. I go back to them over and over and it always sounds fresh and exciting.

My top five Verve songs: 1. Bittersweet Symphony (yes I know and believe that their psychedelic period was way better, but for so many years to me, this was The Verve! No loud guitars, but great ballads and angsty strings! ) 2. Brainstorm Interlude (one of, if not the MOST savage, mechanical, and fucked-up aggressive monster I've ever heard. Must I say more?) 3. The Sun, the Sea (love the dynamics and chaos of this one!) 4. The Drugs Don't Work (just perfect and simply jaw-dropping) 5. Star Sail (seamlessly alternates between shoegaze grooves and weightless soaring, perhaps better than The Sun, the Sea, does) Still need to listen to Forth and I've barely scraped the surface with the b-sides! But I can already safely say that these guys are my favourite band at the moment.

The acoustic demo to The Drugs Don't Work is stark and emotional.

I recommend the whole of Northern Soul and Urban Hymns both classic albums, that's why i'm always hard on Ashcroft solo stuff cause he produced these two classics and I expect better then singing songs about his wife and kids.
Something about the Verve always stood out to me, and it wasn't Ashcroft it was Nick McCabe, he was the uneasy rock guitar god, someone who wasn't in love with himself or the spotlight like the lead singer. without his touches on the Verve albums they would have sounded like any Britpop guitar group, he added the art rock to them. Add in Ashcroft poetic stylings and you got probably one of the best bands from the 90's. They were Oasis more poetic arty yob cousins lol.

What better way to complement my Verve binge than listen to their unreleased demos?
Anyone got the Wigan or Urban Hymns demos?

Ok, I have reuploaded the Verve demos (Wigan tape, Northern Soul early mixes/demos and Urban Hymns era demos). You can find all of them in this thread in the bootleg section of the forum: live4ever.proboards.com/thread/84281/mp3-verve-demos-collectionI strongly suggest to listen to the Wigan demos as they're fantastic. Rough early Verve power
