Now before you have a pop...hear me out.
Noel Gallagher is an outstanding songwriter...probably my favourite of all time, and I think this album will be brilliant.
BUT......
....what is one of the qualities that every good songwriter/song has?
....I'd like to say...
...the ability to craft songs that become part of the social fabric.
Now Noel has done this with Wonderwall, DLBIA, Live Forever, Cigs and Alcohol.
When was his last song of such a standard?
Probably Stop Crying Your Heart Out me thinks...
He has become more self indulgent i think...
I'm just rambling here...but from the songs I've heard so far...(which are TOP) I'm still waiting for him to a do Paul McCartney and write seriously epic songs that the public love...
Mull Of Kintyre Band On The Run...
I think this is the challenge for Noel...

Paul was 27 years old when the Beatles broke up. Many of his big solo hits were between ages 27 and 33. Well Noel's certainly cooked up some great tunes during his 27-33 age gap.

Umm, who cares if Noel's music isn't deeply meaningful to today's society and culture? As long as it's deeply meaningful to you the rest is just bollocks.

What has Noel written recently that has become 'part of the social fabric'?
Nothing really. But it's not about what it means to society, it's about what it means to yourself. And yourself only. And he's written many many tunes in recent years that I take to my heart, despite the general public being oblivious to them.

I reckon his melodies are becoming more generic, like, they aren't as disctintive as they used to be. His later songs have a rather weak identity... specially in the verses.
Just try this mental exercise: Take some of his latest songs and tell me if you would have tagged them as filler in the not so far past.
SOTSOG features songs that are far better than most of his late output
On the other hand, we get quantity: we've gotten a LOT of songs in the last years. He still has his bright moments, but aren't as bright as they used to be, and I believe are meant to be understood by fans mostly. And some of his late weakest output would have been unforgivable 10 or 15 years ago. The Mexican would have been an absolute letdown. It's true that he also changed the style, but it goes beyond that, he is now allowing himself the throwaway style because he can't deliver oasis stadium rock anymore.

All these songs were released 10-15 years ago.

If Where did it all go wrong wasn't written until Chasing Yesterday, this forum would be wanking full time.

Riverman is absolute genius head and shoulders above anything of the SOTSOG era. Most of the CY songs are. Mature and layered.

Which songs would you describe as his latest weakest output?

I'd say Right Stuff is more like Roll it Over. The SOTSOG and HC songs you mentioned are generic, plod and are quite lazy, they're also not that we'll produced. Hindu Times is dreadful,I mean really dreadful nowhere near Might I. SCYHO is good but again quite ploddy. Give it time but I reckon the new stuff is well above it.
