"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening."
One of my alltime favorite bands is done... Shame I never saw them live, I was hoping they would tour with Collapse Into Now...they really delivered until the end. There aren't many bands that can put together such great songs after 25 years!
(BTW, this is the first time that a band I like splits up. Can't imagine what it would have been like had I got into Oasis earlier...)

This really ruined my day. REM are one of the few brilliant indie bands that always remained themselves. Never got hyped. Got very succesfull but never commercial. Michaels voice was really special too. I feel so bad about never seeing them live now Listening to Automatic For The People now. Best album I own.

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I really did believe that R.E.M. would go on forever. Like the Rolling Stones. Can't believe they've broken up. Murmur and Automatic for The People will always be among my most favorite albums of all time. Sad that I never got to see them live. They came plenty of times to Chicago. I just kept thinking, they'll be back the next time.

^Came as a shock for me too. They sounded so young on Collapse Into Now...I reckoned they'd be gone for some years and then return with another great album. Sad that I never got to see them live. They came plenty of times to Chicago. I just kept thinking, they'll be back the next time. They were in Munich a few years ago...but I couldn't find anyone to go with me and my parents thought I was too young to go alone...:/ Listening to Collapse Into Now & Automatic again now. Their stuff is so good...it's incredible. PS: Press this, it'll make you feel better. nooooooooooooooo.com/

Great band, will be greatly missed. You always assume they are gonna be releasing records. They've got some brilliant songs, and Micheal Stipe is a great vocalist. This is one of my favorite songs of all time: "Watch the road and memorize This life that passed before my eyes"

I just kept thinking, they'll be back the next time. ^ isn't that the mistake we always make? that's why i'm vowing the next time both macca and u2 come to boston, i'm ponying up the big $$$ to see them both, before it's too late. back to r.e.m., never was one of my favourites... however, with that said, the album 'out of time' will always be in my memory as one of the soundtracks to my high school years (yes, i'm old haha).... you couldn't escape that album back in 1991-92. and yes, i do dig some of their (earlier) stuff. to michael and the gang: thanks for the music, and the memories.

They are one of my favorite bands, a sad loss even if they haven't done anything great since 96.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I can't believe it! One of my all time favourite bands - what a way to ruin my day. I was always intending to see them live aswell. It seems that the dwindling sales and concerts took their toll. And their last album was brilliant. I'm more disappointed with this than the Oasis split (I knew we'd be getting music from both Gallaghers) but since these guys have only ever worked as a team then it really is devastating. Here's an article about the split - taking the state of the music industry into account. Very worrying indeed. www.beehivecity.com/music/r-e-m-split-after-finding-they-are-out-of-time-will-u2-follow568953/

A4TP ranks right up there with DM and WTSMG on that "best albums of the 90s" list. Before Oasis, there was R.E.M. in my life. 30 wonderful years, 15 wonderful albums, an EP, several compilations, B-sides, etc. Today truly is a "Bad Day."

Never gave them a proper chance, but will do so in the coming days/weeks. From what I've heard, I have liked, of course. Impressive 31 years, though.
I like the clip Spaneli included.

I will admit when I tried to get into them I was rather young and my tastes have "matured" a bit but like you NL4E I think i'm going to try and give them another chance. Buck is a fantastic guitarist regardless. Its mainly Stipe's voice that threw me off when I gave them a chance about 6 years ago but the good thing about the demise (although than them bowing out with some grace and modesty) is it allows people like me to give them another shot to really get a chance to see what they were all about.

Automatic For the People and New Adventures in HIFI are pretty spectacular albums (check out 'Electrolite' or the aforementioned 'Nightswimming', but the greatest REM moment for me would have to be 'Fall On Me' from one of their earlier albums, might be Fables of the Resurrection or Reckoning. Brilliant song with a haunting chorus. They were like chameleons REM, always changing and always succeeding in new grounds.

so another once upon a time-greatest rock band in the world calls it quits. sad... but i didn't really think much of their last album, pretty boring stuff imo. Made Oasis last album sound like BHN. lol.
anyways, here's a question for you guys.... who do you consider the current greatest rock band in the world?
not talking about just the biggest or what you consider the best, but a combination of the two.

I heard all of their 15 albums, and since Up til now they become mediocre, but everything from Murmur til AFTP is great, a great run of albums BTW.

There was once a really good video mash-up of these two songs, but apparently it is gone now. Oh well. Still a great combo tune.
R.E.M. is classic.
Cheers!
