Automatic For the People and New Adventures in HIFI are pretty spectacular albums (check out 'Electrolite' or the aforementioned 'Nightswimming', but the greatest REM moment for me would have to be 'Fall On Me' from one of their earlier albums, might be Fables of the Resurrection or Reckoning. Brilliant song with a haunting chorus. They were like chameleons REM, always changing and always succeeding in new grounds. "Fall On Me" was from Life's Rich Pageant (their 4th album). And I agree - although NAIHi-Fi didn't sell as well as previous albums, it ranks up there with their best, IMO (really love "Be Mine"). Let's not forget the glorious wall of noise, "Let Me In" from their Monster album, or the gorgeous "Time After Time" from Reckoning. "The Lifting" is another great track...the leadoff track on Reveal. Gosh, I'm gonna miss this band!

I guess this would count as their Wonderwall, but it's still brilliant. Need to get their albums, which is a daunting task - so many to choose from!

I'm still really upset about this. After The Smiths and Oasis, they were my favourite band. I can't believe they called it a day because their last album was fantastic. Michael Stipe is up there with Morrissey, Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher in my heroes list.
But after 15 albums I can't complain about the immense quality they have given. Along with The Smiths, they are the only band where I can honestly say they don't have a bad song. Sure some are much weaker than others but none are outright bad.
I'm delighted to see the recognition for Fall On Me (my personal favourite of theirs). Some of my favourite tunes include like Nightswimming, Find The River, Begin The Begin, Pilgrimage, Driver 8 - the list goes on and on.
And I don't agree with those who claimed they 'sold out' when signing for Warner. I think Out Of Time is patchy in places and one of their weakest albums but if a band has apparently 'sold out' by making the masterpiece Automatic For The People, well I just hope other bands 'sell out'!
RIP REM

1 of the best bands ever along with oasis & the beatles, collapse into now is very underrated,i'll never know why fans stopped buying them like they used to.
A greatest hits is released november 15th with 4 new songs from what i hear,i'll definitely be buying it.
It'd be great if someone on facebook could set up a page for everyone to download losing my religion, the fact it got to 19 the first time here in the u.k. was bad.
Sad news!

^Collapse Into Now did pretty well sales-wise. It even got to Nr.1 in Germany, something most good bands don't achieve. Agree that it's a great album, kinda like a best of, just with new songs, if that makes any sense. NL4E, I'd say Losing My Religion is their Wonderwall, although I think Out of Time isn't one of their best. If you're looking for an album to start with, try Automatic for the People and New Adventures. Although their last 2 might be more fitting for the taste of Oasis fans - many great rock songs like this:

^you know , they've had so many damn hits that i'm thinking the only way they can possibly 'get the tracklisting right' is if they go the time flies route, and do a double-cd.
EDIT: ESPECIALLY if it contains four new songs!!

NL4E, you can't go wrong with any of their early albums - each of them are just perfect in my opinion. Up until Out Of Time (which is good but patchy in places) it's all great. Their later stuff isn't that great but it's still very good. You like The Smiths, and much of their sound, particularly early on, is sort of similar - i.e. Peter Buck's guitar playing is jangly ala Johnny Marr. Even Peter Buck said so himself, which is one of the reasons he loves The Smiths.

Their later stuff isn't that great but it's still very good. i have high hopes for this upcoming greatest hits, it could be really really great. but exactly what you said, their later stuff isn't as good as the first 2/3rds of their cannon. (probably even a hardcore r.e.m. would attest to that, but prove me wrong?) with that said i'm hoping the 4 new songs are decent enough (but probably won't stand up as well against the other material).... looking at their singles on wikipedia i came up with these tracks that i think would most certainly have to be included: fall on me superman the one i love it's the end of the world as we know it orange crush stand losing my religion shiny happy people drive man on the moon everybody hurts the sidewinder sleeps tonite nightswimming what's the frequency kenneth bang and blame electrolite + the 4 new songs .... that's 20 tracks right there, and i stopped at around 1996 or so (!! ) , because i'm not that familiar with their material from 1997-2011. 2 discs will definitely be needed. i would also like to see 'radio song' included (f*cking love that tune), but we're talking about a 'greatest hits' here, and not a 'best of'.

I saw this info... The record is called: Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage: 1982-2011, out November 15th and made of 2 CDs(with 4 unheard tracks!!!). I think is time to tell Bono and Co. to do the same thing with u2.

^ NIIICE tracklisting yet?? Nope, but since is a band with a great back calatoge you can do some great playlists out of them. I would like to have one disc of 1983-1991 and the other off 1992-2011 but it could work any way(and they have the tunes to do whatever they like and would work as an introduction to the band, wich is the point of the wholle thing). The only thing that bothers me is if the material is going to be re-mastered(or the waves are going to take a haircut, if you accept the analogy) I would buy it since I only own Automatic for the people and Hi-Fi

^ yeah, chronological order would be better than mixing everything up. and i agree with you, it's great to have everything mastered the same way, as long as it isn't a brick.

I hate it when bands release new songs with greatest hits releases. It just seems like a lazy way to to get hardcore and casual fans reason to buy the record and in the process kind of ruins it in the historical context - becasue the new songs are clearly not going to be near as good as any of the classic past tracks picked for the compialtion.
In Time: Best of 1988-2003 was a victim of this and only picked the most radio-friendly singles available. Where was 'Drive' or 'Fall On Me' or 'Half A World Away' or anything like that? Not to mention the complete blacklisting of anything pre 1988, which is considered by many hardcore fans to be their golden period. I hope this new release does a better job in shaping a retrospective of their career that showcases the best music, not just the most-market friendly singles.

I hate it when bands release new songs with greatest hits releases. +100 ... k+ it's supposed to be a greatest 'hits' ffs , and how can the new songs even be considered a 'hit' when they have yet to be released? EDIT: there are, however, few-and-far-between a few exceptions... for example, 'wheels' off the foo fighters greatest hits is a tune.
