I can't remember the last time there wasn't a general sense of disappointment following a Gallagher release. How long ago was it? The Beady Eye stuff disappointed, this first Noel single has disappointed, even The Shock of The Lightning disappointed. What was the reaction to Lyla like?

I think it all depends on the person, but overall I'm not dissapointed at all by BDI or TDOYAM, but I'm fairly easy to please when it comes to anything Gallagher.

Overall, I like both BDI and Noel's single. But I'm more curious to hear IWLIAD(IMRM) and STC than I was for TDOYAM.

People (including myself) were GUTTED upon hearing Morning Glory (I purchased on the day of release back in 1995). Look at the original reviews. It wasn't until a while later when everyone - including myself - went... "ohhhhhhhhh".
Trouble is, people have expectations of what they want albums to sound like. Some on here were CONVINCED that Noel would release a masterpiece, instantly shaming Beady Eye and popular music as we know it, and sitting right up there with The Masterplan.
Then he releases a good, strong single that albeit no masterpiece, is much in line with strong recent Noel efforts. It's not my sort of thing, but of course the die hard Noel fans love it - much as I'll give Liam the benefit of the doubt in most situations.
But then - how often does ANYONE release a masterpiece? The fact is - Noel has two albums' worth in his back catalogue. Most people don't come close to one - but that doesn't mean the rest of their careers are not meaningful or important.
Everything always normalizes after time. The mediocre is forgotten and discarded (who gives a crap about HC or now?), and the quality is remembered and cherished (MG, DBTT). And we spent the rest of time on forums bickering over everything else in between (BHN, SOTSOG & DGSS)!

I like it to a point. It is just simply not a bold enough statement of intent for his first solo release and it really leaves him open to all sorts of criticism from the music press.
When there is material such as EIOTR with the amazing/epic strings and choir it is an error in my view.
Not bad, just not good enough imo.

GlastoEls is very right.
People have just utterly lost perspective. An artist releases a single and people want to judge it straight out of the box and if it isn't a classic to their ears within a spin or two it's a disappointment. Or it's an unquestioned all time classic!
Morning Glory got poor initial reviews. Be Here Now got rave reviews. The fact is, we don't know how an album is going to play out for awhile...
Especially when it comes to Noel Gallagher songs. The best ones tend to grow and play out over a number of listens. I was completely underwhelmed by Lyla when it came out. Thought it had no hook, was shite--but now its one of my all-time faves. Conversely, I was all over THT when it came out, was screaming "return to form!", and now I don't like it at all.
Give it a bit of time, my friends. My own initial impression of TDOYAM is that I like it, and will see if it develops into a classic or not.

It is very rare when a single release really gets people going quickly. As GlastoEls has said, even popular Oasis releases took some time to take off.
I like it for the record.

Apart from the DBTT liking I think everything GlastoEls has said is right and k+ for you.
Can I ask if you was Everlast/Brett on Oasis fanatic btw? Your posting style seems familiar from some other forum.

Some people just dont get it. Do you think TDOYAM is going to be the strongest song on the album? Why would he release his "album diamond" as the first single? It would mean there is no other way than down for the rest of the album.
As said above, its a solid, melodic track (I personally think its great and the rest of the album must be incredible) that gets you excited in anticipation for the album to come out!
Any Noel fan who is doubting this track now will have changed their opinion come October 17th. Does everyone expect him to release Live Forever or Dont Look Back In Anger everytime a new track is going to come out? No. Get real and enjoy what you're getting cause its just about the best new music anyone will be listening to anytime soon.
There I said it...its out there!

There I said it...its out there! that diamond of the album thing is right. but usually you release the song with the most single potential first. thats the way noel did it in the last decade. so the rest of the album could be a let down. the old oasis problem in the past, no single material or just one song.

So people are judging an album based on the first song we hear again?
Bring The Light really wasn't released that long ago.

my kids just played it 4 times on the trot, they love it (aged 7 and 4) and the more I heard it the better it got. I think my opinion will change again over the next fews days/weeks.
defo not as bad as I thought. a grower with better to come. I still can not help question Noels decisions at times (Album cover for one, drab to say the least in comparison to the single).
I still hold out hope, IIHAG and EIOTR (strings/choir mix) are amazing, and STC has been said to be very fresh now. Time will tell.

Either a song is catchy and interesting or it's not. It's pretty simple. This song is not. Nothing wrong with admitting it.

How can this song be dissapointing? Guess it's expectations of yours that are to high.. what did you expect? This song is a real quality song by Noel i must say. Did you expect another DM/MG lifechanging song? Another Wonderwall/CS/DLBIA? Well if so, this could be dissapoining yes ... but on the other hand ... these old days songs are past.. why more of the same? No .. i can not agree with you .. this is not a dissapointment to me .. actually just what i expected ... a good quality and recoqnizable Noel song ... the difference between my good feeling and your dissapointment in this song is in the different kind of expectaions ...

It wasn't so much disappointment, I remember everyone was really pleased to hear it but at the same time we all knew it wasn't anything special from hearing the trailer. It was like 'great another Oasis song. At least it's not crap.' If anything, I remember there being a LOT of praise for Falling Down, I don't remember anyone complaining about that song, apart from possibly that it was too close to Tomorrow Never Knows. just saying.

even The Shock of The Lightning disappointed. What was the reaction to Lyla like? Both of those tunes knocked my fucking socks off the first time I heard them. I couldn't get enough of TSOTL.
