definetely a grower... I love it. Very new which I was hoping for. I must admit I like the fact he's not heavily relying on guitar solos this time..a totally new direction. I think his album will be liberating in some ways - Respect for that!! Nice move Mr. N. Gallagher.. smart move. To be fair, Noel hasn't "relied" on guitar solos since 1997. yeah okay... maybe a more precise phrase: he's not relying heavily on guitars in general. As noel said in the press conference: "it's not very guitar hero.."

Am I the only one who thinks the whole Beady Eye vs Noel creative argument is pretty irrelevant, not to mention redundant? Different songs written by different people. I like both. The nature of music is to compare. Whether creatively, critically, commercially. Music is meant to be compared and debated. If you find that redundant, then this forum and music are probably redundant in themselves. A certain degree of comparison between the two is inevitable, I understand that. We all know Noel is the better songwriter, I just think things like the NME headline tonight 'Fans declare TDOYAM better than Beady Eye" or whatever it was, a bit tiresome.

It seems as if Noel has expanded his musical pallette - something that was seriously lacking in later Oasis. Just the same old guitar sound got a bit boring. It's great to see him being more expansive.

Alright. I may get longwinded here...I apologize in advance.
The phrase of the day seems to be "noel-by numbers" and I just have to wonder about this. That seems lazy.
Noel by numbers? Like he has been perpetually releasing tunes like this for years? When did it start becoming the norm to accept that TIOBI as Noel-by-numbers. Prior to DBTT Noel had NEVER done anything like TIOBI before. and he hasn't since.
TIOBI is actually a tune I always pointed to as sounding quite unique amongst the Noel's Oasis output. He has hardly released enough tunes like it for it to have become "by the numbers." They sit comfortably together but should hardly be overpowering us with the feeling of "yet another tune of that ilk." We know damn well that the 4 tunes we haven't heard are not in the same style...and I am doubting that the rest that we haven't hear are either.
Noel-by-number has always meant to me something more in the vein of LTBL, LBL, SCYHO. Noel-by-numbers is a ballad. That is his default. His default is not jaunty acoustic tracks like TIOBI and TDOYAM, IMO
It's a kindred song in style and vibe to something like TIOBI to an extent.
I agree that it references back to some Oasis material. I think that it might have been chosen as a single with that in mind. But if they had both been put on DBTT I think they would have been obviously put together as similar vibes...but would hardly have been confused. It certainly brings something new to the table.
BDI released BTL to draw a line between them and Oasis. Noel isn't running from his Oasis output...he's building on it. This will fit well into his catalogue and sound great next to the likes of TIOBI or POTQ. I think it was released because it is summery and jaunty and will go down on radio.
PS...I enjoyed reading your post of song structure shoes222.

I think it's great. It's a new song written by Noel Gallagher so obviously I'm enthusiastic like I always am when I hear a new song by him! I hope that enthusiasm doesn't wear off. I love the light feel of it, great lyrics, sounds very free and unconfined, but unmistakably Noel. I'm sure there are stronger tracks on the album, and it might not be the huge anthem that some were expecting or hoping for, but I think it's a good leading single that will turn a lot of people on to Noels project. I see it as a cousin to TIOBI, but it definitely stands up on it's own. I can see it fitting in to the album quite nicely.
Very excited about this.

It's catchy...ish. It reminds me of older music, maybe the band they were trying to replicate a little bit. I have a feeling it'll grow on me. Seems a decent lead single, doubt it will chart that well in the end though. And yeah, the video is cool, but you can really tell his age, and even though we knew the kids of today (me) would never really get into it, it's definitely true now. And while I'm maybe the slightest bit dissappointed, I'll still be singing the chorus as I go on now. "...Just call me The Roller I'll squeeze and unfold ya..."

well then, here we go. my first impressions... first of all, the video is completely retarded(though the waitress is HAWT) so unless you're a fanboy we can all agree on that. On to the important part, the music. It has that TIOBI sound, a palpable folk sound and just like that song, it's not bad at all. Unfortunately for TDOYAM , there's nothing extraordinary about it. And by that i mean there's not one part of the song that gives you chills or makes you go "ahh yeah... that's why i love Noel Gallagher/Oasis". Again, that doesn't mean the song is not good. Like everything in life, it's all relative, and there will be people(mainly Noel fanboys and apologists) claiming this is the best shit since "Don't Look back in Anger", just like there are Kobe fanboys out there saying Jordan's got nothing on him. LOL but back on point... Just like i thought, Noel wasn't gonna be putting out stuff that was in the same league with the early Oasis stuff, i think it's pretty safe to say that was a given but there were those swearing Noel would "show me" and "shut everybody's mouth". on with there review... the song lacks any serious sense of punch and there is no hook whatsoever... not a good one anyways. I think this has a shot however, to make the VH1 top20 weekly countdown(U.S.) and that would really do wonders for Noel profile here in the states. I feel like this song(and sound) targets an older audience, this isn't Oasis obviously but then again, it's just one song. On the the comparisons... Beady Eye's stuff(not all) was a bit more catchy and sounded more like Oasis. IT goes without saying that we can only judge based on this one song, but that's all we got at the moment. BDI also sounded more like Oasis(and yes, that's a good thing for me) because that's the way it was always gonna be having the same vocalist. If im not mistaken, this is the HFB's first actual(for real) single, this is no promo(free download/teaser) shit, this is the real deal, and comparing this to The Roller(BDI's first proper single) is quite interesting. Even if Noel hates it, One can't help but imagine what "The Death of You and Me" would sound like if Liam was singing it. I have no problem saying i believe it would be 100 times a better song but oh well... I am glad it didn't take Noel 3 years to release something and i am glad that i can say it's good music. I don't know that this will be the best song on the album, i sure hope that's not the case. However, there's a strong possibility that this is the most "commercial/marketable" song, and that would be a complete and utter disaster. i missed that earlier. that's priceless. i'm giving you karma every hour on the hour for the rest of forever. wow. God, i fucking hate lgfaver. i just wanna punch him in the face. fucker!!!!!!

It's good, but not a single. It likely would have made the next Oasis record. In my opinion, it does not fare well compared to Four Letter Word and The Roller. 100% Agree

Noel is Noel - it's an OK song. Good melody as always.
But far from what I want from the Gallaghers. I want more Oasis-style tunes. Anthems. And I hope the album has more Record Machine-like tunes than this type of song. Less falsetto songs as well. And hopefully this will fit in well on the album as some kind of good filler.
Sadly, my strongest feeling now is that it's a pity he's not writing songs for Liam's voice and Oasis anymore.

I do like falsetto songs,, i think its cool that he has that approach. It was obvious that everybody was going to start making the Beady eye comparisons which are inevitable. I do enjoy Beady Eye a lot,,, but lets be honest... but musically and lyrically Noel is just in a different league imo.

Hello everyone. A long time lurker on this site and finally decided to register today.
Loving the new Noel song (and Beady Eye too!). I wasn't expecting that outro!
Does anyone think the intro and first verse sound a bit like A Quick Peep off Heathen Chemistry?

Every criticism I have heard of this song has to do with it not conforming to people's preconceived notions on how Noel's debut single should sound. Does anyone actually have any criticism of the song itself??
The fact is this is a well written, radio-friendly, fairly enjoyable summertime tune. Enjoy it.

It gives me the feeling of Springsteen's 1973 album The Wild, The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle btw.
