Who do you think is underrated in the music business? Which bands and artists deserve much more recognition than they deserve?
Here's my list of 'hidden gems' who I think are better than any of the big bands in the world at the moment.
Idlewild Frightened Rabbit Echo and the Bunnymen A-ha Embrace Belle and Sebastian

In my opinion, the most underrated/virtually unknown artist in the history of modern music...

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - their live shows are still full on ear shredding rock n roll, and they're still releasing great albums.
I don't think Beck gets enough recognition either.

I'd like to throw the Smithereens and the Replacements into the ring.
Both are great bands to come out of the US in the 1980s that don't get the love they quite deserve.

I'd like to throw the Smithereens and the Replacements into the ring. Both are great bands to come out of the US in the 1980s that don't get the love they quite deserve. you are so right about that. The Mat's Let It Be > The Beatle's Let It Be some others The Thrills-fantastic summery pop. I've said this before the album Teenager by them is in my top five records of all time. Cat Power-this women is such a great artist The Rifles-Better than Kasabian, The Cribs, and most other big indie rock bands in the UK Supergrass-Came along way since Caught By The Fuzz as a band. Great journey Broken Social Scene-simply amazing. So unique Spoon-critics not so much but the public although they are getting more famous still don't realize that they are one of the best rock n roll bands of our generation Ben Folds (Five)-The great pop pianist of our time The Cardigans-early work is some of the best pop of the 90's The Flaming Lips-I think that The Soft Bulletin is one the quiet masterpieces of the 90's Los Campesinos!-I know NL4E will agree with me here. Just a great fun twee band that should be heard of a bit more than they are. Lyrics are great kinda like a Alex Turner that is more punk and on a sugar rush. Mew-Indie/Prog at its finest Shout Out Louds-same as Los Campesinos Stars-do dramatic music with taste. Amy Millan sounds like an Angel Super Furry Animals-Why they haven't done asked to do James Bond tune yet is beyond me Ryan Adams-early work gets a lot of credit but even with all the albums he has released he still in my books hasn't released a shitty one. hell, i even like rock n roll for what it is pure homage and fun. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club-like epiphone100 said still made great music and live they are epic.

I agree with all those bands you mentioned, matt. Frightened Rabbit has been doing great in the US too lately and I'm a huge fan of the Bunnymen for ages. I agree with Cast too. Cat Power is such a incredible woman. I really love her voice and her style. If I was a man, I would have been in love with a woman like her. I've been a fan of The Rifles since "Great Escape". I'm going to see them (acoustic gig) for the first time next month.
I have to add one band and one artist on my list cos they're both truly fantastic, but too underrated!

Have to say Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. Great albums, and what a live band! Saw them in Gothenburg last year, it was mega! One of my favorite band I have to say.
Kasabian is a underrated band here in Sweden anyway. Seems that no one knows about them. That doesn't mean they underrated, but anyway.

Broken Social Scene Deerhunter Beach House Delorean The New Pornographers The Cribs, to a lot of people they seem to be another generic UK indie band, but their last record speaks for itself.

Athlete - they suffer from people comparing them to Coldplay but, to me, they are so much better. Live they are underrated as well, saw them at Rock City and they were amazing. Ok so a few of their songs may sound similair but when you compare stuff from their debut to their last album (Black Swan Song) you can see how much they have matured.

There was a British half punk/half melodic rock band in the early 90s called Senseless Things that made some real catchy music. They toured as Blur's backup band here in The States in 1992 or so, but for some reason, even alternative radio as well as alternative music fans ignored them. How Ned's Atomic Dustbin scratched the surface back then and these guys didn't is beyond me.

Deerhunter/Bradford Cox are pretty overrated. Outside of Cryptograms and a few standouts from later albums they don't really justify the praise.
