yeah, lol, I really gotta let the keane thing go. Love their first two lps and then an utter plane crash.
It's all about timing to me, man. At least 50% of what made Nirvana "Nirvana" was of course their "when".
You can of course say much of the same for Oasis.
Now, I realize that's an important point, but as a MASSIVE fan of BOTH artists, when I compare and contrast their song catalogs, it's really not even close for me.
Kurt will always enjoy mythical status due to obvious reasons, but one has to admire how the FF's have maintained such rabid popularity, and really, wide spread respect after an entire genre of music went right through the crust of the earth.
Again, very much alike the reality of another band we all know.
Last, although I realize some here will call me insane, I see MANY fantastic parallels between Noel and Dave's songwriting. And I don't think it's a coincidence that they're very likely THE most popular modern American rock act in the UK.
To each, his own, though.

Kurt Cobain's definitely one of my favorite artists. also, Dave Grohl was really young in Nirvana. i doubt he was developed as an artist, and person at the time. he seemed that way anyway. also, i see the Noel gallagher/Dave Grohl parallels too. it'd be interesting if they worked together some day.

Forget Keane, he has Jet in there for fucks sake. Yes. A man with enough kahonies to put a short list together knowing full-well it'll be picked apart...largely by a gathering of pin-dicks who undoubtedly have some of their own questionable guilty pleasures...and worse. I made the damn thing 4-5 yrs ago while riding a short buzz on either band. Give it up, I'll change it soon enough.

I have guilty pleasures sure. But thats different to stating 'collectively saving rock n' roll as we like to know it'
hahahaha yeah you have big balls for putting that in a sig on an online Oasis forum ffs.

This is a travesty!!! DGSP is much much much better than SOTSOG, HC and DOYS... Noel wrote classics... but in the 90´s!! GLIO, Lyla, The hindu times, The importance and SCYHO can be called classics, but the rest is... the rest. Beady eye´s debut album has something that the 4 last albums lack: SOUL.
You might say: Liam, Gem and Andy wrote banal songs, but so did Noel in his 3 lasts albums. How can we compare Falling down to the fantastic up lifting message in Rock and roll star or Cigarettes and Alcohol (eternal truths for the young ones) or She is love to Wonderwall. Yeah, Beady eye writes no solid ground songs, an my friends, sad but truth: your idol Noel as well.
Grow up people, times have changed and our idols are not time-proof!!!

Christ dude, Falling Down, really? That fkn tune is complete class. The Turnings up there with his very best rockers, and Bag it Up right up there with the finest openers.
Different songs, different meanings. Your lust for "uplifting" is another man's trite cliche.
Again, Noel has had strokes of brilliance across nearly 2 decades..albeit some hotter streaks than others.
LAG have about 5 moments of it over 10 years.

Wholeheartedly disagree with you. Take 'The Shock of the Lightning' for example. That was one of the VERY LAST songs Noel wrote for Oasis, and there is as much energy (including an amazing drum solo), soaring uplifting vocals and as much of a melody as anything on Definitely Maybe. And other songs like Record Machine prove that further. And that's what Noel provides that the members of Beady Eye can't, a keen ear for pop melodies along with lyrics that create imagery and inspire you.

I agree, DGSS is a decent album, but that's all. It's not near ANY Oasis album imo, and I couldn't call any song a classic, although I really like FLW, TBGO and TMS....
As someone already said in other thread, BDI's album just made me much more hunger for The Cheif's solo album....

It comes down to this. I personally love Beady Eye but I can see how some say it's just decent.
That said, Noel is great, and we all love Liam's voice and if Oasis were to put out a double album. Half of it was Beady Eye, and the other half was Noel written songs, all but 3 or 4 song by Liam, and Noel's songs are as good as we'd expect, it would make for a brilliant album even if the LAG part is not as good as Noel's.
For the most part, we should be happy we are all getting more music.

In fairness, how many masterpieces has Noel wrote in the last 10 years? Personally I'd say three - Falling Down, TIOBI and SCYHO. You can argue the toss over the number if you want, but I'd certainly say he's wrote more average than not.
Beady Eye have wrote and recorded a fairly decent album in 12 months, and certainly one that stands up alongside the last 3 Oasis albums (not saying its better, but on par, roughly). Out of the 17 we've heard so far theres only a handful of shit ones, which again I think is quite decent.
I think what I've learnt from all of this is that you don't need 3 years to write a decent album - even if it is devoid of any masterpieces - and that just because their contributions to Oasis were shite, that doesn't make them poor songwriters.

There were three years between albums...but a year of that @ least was gigs. And then there were the long annoying holidays.

I still havent done the: What Oasis album is DGSS better than? thing.
DGSS isn't better than DBTT. Its more consistent than DOYS, but DOYS is better (just because there is nothing on DGSS that comes close to best 5 songs on DOYS), and HC would be the same DOYS. A more consistent album than HC, but still better than DGSS (just on the pure basis of the singles). I find SOTSOG fuckin appalling, but I still might put it above DGSS (thats not to say DGSS is appalling, SOTOSG is just appalling by Oasis standards. If that makes sense).
What did I learn: nothing much. I didn't have high expectations for the album and was pretty glad to get the decent album that we got. So I wasn't surprised when I heard DGSS, and didn't hear a single classic. Though one thing that I can take from this, is that I have much more respect for Liam. Liam took the reins and at least delivered something that was passable. He proved a lot of his critics wrong. Sure, the expectation were rock bottom, that's where people expected him to end up. But he didn't.
I will (as many will) be eagerly awaiting a Noel solo album. For all the stuff that Noel has taken over the last few years about not writing enough classics anymore, I find it hard to think of more than 3 bad tunes from the HC-DOYS era, that he wrote. But I can also name at least 1 classic from each album. I find it weird how some people have said that Noel's solo album won't be as consistent as DGSS. I'd like to know where they've seen inconsistency from Noel? (HC-DOYS era)
Sure he hasn't written many classics recently, but he hasn't written many bad songs recently either. I really do believe that Noel will make an album better than latter day Oasis. Not better than early Oasis, but better than the latter day one. And instead of 1 classic, I think there might 2 classics, along with 6 really good songs, 2 good songs, and 1 decent song.

I think that he is right to call FD to be a materpiece. That is an amazing song IMO. TBGO is bordering on great...but it isn't CLASSIC. The album doesn't have a classic song on it...that's my opinion..and it isn't gonna change.
