Well, after last night's demolition of Croatia, it seems us English folk can officially begin looking forward giddily to next year's World Cup, and to the crushing disappointment that will inevitably follow when we fail once more to live up to our potential, and are knocked out on penalties in the quarter finals.
So, anyone know where I can buy some face paint and a set of small plastic flags?

I'm probably wrong, but hey, I can dream. We've got our best squad since 66' and a tank full of youngsters ready to get into the first team. It's not that we've been shit for the past 43 years, its been a mixture of bad luck, horrific refs (I think Sol Campbell would back me up on that ) and cheats (Maradona, Simeone, ironically, both Argentinian). Based off the 8 qualifiers so far, were the best team in Europe and with Argentina probably not going to make the finals and Brazil having scored a few less goals than us despite playing twice as many games, that'd mean were the best in the world, based off statistics, which sounds good on paper but probably won't mean anything come next summer. We'll make the quarters imo, pretty easily and then scrap through to the semi's, where we'll probably get beat by the eventual winners (I say Spain or Holland). On paper, we have the best selection of players but it doesn't translate well on the pitch. Capello's different though and I think he will suceed where Sven and so many others failed. We know we have our attacking sorted with Rooney, Heskey and Defoe in great form, plus Lamps and Gerrard finally being used well in the same midfield. He'll focus on our defense, an area we have struggled in for a while. We'll defend tightly in numbers and try to stop the passing game of Spain and Holland, while attempting to out muscle the likes of Germany and Italy. My predictions are, realistically... 1st - Spain 2nd - Holland 3rd - England 4th - Germany

with Argentina probably not going to make the finals Even fifth place in their qualifying group entitles them to a playoff against the fourth-placed side from CONCACAF, which shouldn't prove too difficult a hurdle when you consider their probable opposition - Honduras or Costa Rica. Provided they finish fifth, that is.

Provided they finish fifth, that is. as long as the game is not in Honduras with a central American referee

I don't know if I should pronounce myself on this... Portugal is on shit this year. Scolari is gone, the party's over. And fucking Ronaldo only gives joy to every country except ours.

The hype machine is up and running. Next 9 months - WAGs, metatarsils and false hope. Enjoyed it much more in 2008, with no England in site.
Viva Espana.

I don't get why most of us end up supporting other countries than England. Given, they've nearly always let us down, but isnt switching to another team Glory-hunting?! I mean you wouldn't ever change clubs because yours is crap isnt it?!
If I'm totally off course, I'd like someone to explain

I don't get why most of us end up supporting other countries than England. I think indifference towards England is becoming more common amongst fans of top flight clubs. United fans have been at it for the best part of a decade now, myself included, but that doesn't mean to say that I don't want them to do well. It just means I'm more likely to shrug my shoulders if they don't.

It just means I'm more likely to shrug my shoulders if they don't. I don't see anything wrong in not being passionate, but what gets to me is that several of my mates seem to be "supporting" Spain, or even Portugal when Ronaldo was still at United. Makes absolutely no sense to me

the only team that can go to a WC being favorite and win it is Brazil. All the rest fail with that pressure. We saw it at Confed cup with Spain.
It's a bit soon for me to talk about favorite teams, but I think Brazil, Spain, Italy/Germany and England will reach the semifinals. Maybe Holland too. France and Argentina have horrible coaches, the African teams still have to show their true potential and believe they can go further, and with a bit of luck there will be no "official team" with referee's help (like South Korea on 2002).

England won't win it that's for sure. Aren't Brazil the only team to win it outside their own continent? If that's the case Brazil and African teams have to be favourites

The U.S. soccer team is headed to South Africa for a chance to redeem itself in the World Cup.
Conor Casey scored his first two international goals in the second half, Landon Donovan added another and the United States clinched its sixth straight World Cup berth with a game to spare by rallying past Honduras 3-2 Saturday night.
In one of the most thrilling end-to-end matches the U.S. has played in many years, the Americans took a 3-1 lead before Honduras closed on Julio Cesar De Leon's second goal of the game.

Germany always do well, Spain will probably crumble, England will loose to someone on penalties. Brazil are the team i'd watch out for. Other than Germany, Spain and Brazil I really can't see anyone else with much hope.
