Years after this poll was conducted and The Smiths keep on getting further and further in front of The Stone Roses. My opinion on The Roses hasn't changed, though I've come to the conclusion I think their debut album is incredibly overrated. I used to love it back when I was 17, but for a ten track album, there are three duff tunes - Elizabeth My Dear, Don't Stop and Bye Bye Badman are poor, and the first half of I Am The Resurrection is the best thing on the album but the second half is just boring jamming in my opinion. Suffice to say, they are not ageing too well in my opinion. I think Morrissey is a far more original and unique front man than Ian Brown (and pretty much anyone else) and his lyrics are much more meaningful. There's a gritty, grounded realism to The Smiths that give them a more human element than The Roses, making them timeless. And I said this weeks ago, and something Noel Gallagher said too, but The Smiths have at least 6 albums worth of top quality compared to just 2 albums of Stone Roses quality (debut album and b-sides collection.... I think Second Coming is a load of rubbish personally). This is what makes the forum lively, all of our lovely opinions and I love it! I originally was going to write a college essay but got too lazy so I'll just state my opinion. Don't Stop is Waterfall reserved so it really isn't a true song I think. Elizabeth My Dear is their own rendition of Scarborough Fair, and it's less than a minute so it is obviously filler. Bye Bye Badman is great! So in conclusion we are all entitled to our thoughts and opinions on who's better. I got a chance to finally listen to the Smiths' first album a few weeks ago and it was amazing. The Roses and Smiths' first albums are really great I enjoy them equally as much. I don't think Second Coming sucks because there are great tunes on there, and sucks that there are really bad ones that were pinned by Brown mostly. Also I Am the Resurrection's outro are one of the greatest album closers I've ever heard! Ok I done, still love you matt

I know there are thousands of Stone Roses lovers on here and I think the debut is brilliant, but I can't say it is as important to me as it once was. Johnny Marr is my favourite guitarist of all time and the thing that fascinates me with Morrissey is he is a kindred spirit to so many who listen to his lyrics, yet still an enigmatic, puzzling frontman of the sort that Michael Stipe and Thom Yorke could only aspire to be (btw, I'm a fan of REM and Radiohead too, but Morrissey's untouchable compared to them). For a frontman, never have I been so sure and unsure about a character at the same time, thus why he continues to fascinate.

Neither are really my taste but I've gone for The Smiths just because their stuff is a bit more interesting and The Stone Roses didn't have songs as good as How Soon is Now and Please, Please, Please...,
I've got everything the Stone Roses did from my teens but nowadays it's just too 'indie' for my taste (and I mean indie in the worst possible way, aka the laddish, fred perry polo shirt wearing crowd who all think they're Mancunian despite coming from Norwich).
Songs like I Am The Resurrection and Made of Stone are great songs but as a group they don't do anything for me

After a great deal of consideration I've gone for the smiths - my favourite guitarist and second favourite lyricist triumphs over The Roses melodic ability. Although The Stone Roses is my favourite album between the two.

The new album will be a folk album judging by all the beards! Seriously though I had pretty much given up hope on them and I was fully expecting an announcement that they had split, so it's encouraging to see some potentially positive signs of something brewing.

Iv just evened up the score with a nod to the Stone Roses. Any "must listen to" recommendations for the Smiths, iv been meaning to give them a go for a while. Listen to the Queen Is Dead. Brilliant from start to finish. I really, really like the Stone Roses but they absolutely cannot compete with the Smiths. Unfair comparison and I'm shocked so many think otherwise. I will say, I also love The Seahorses record as a post-Roses John Squire effort.

I am just glad that they are just friends, new music would be great but after their original split(or well John/Reni falling out of the band) anything else has been a plus.

And for me besides Oasis I would put New Order.

Absolutely horrified to see Elizabeth My Dear described as filler! They could've put Elephant Stone, Standing Here or Mersey Paradise on the album if they wanted to so it's not like they we're lacking tunes. Elizabeth My Dear is an anti-royalist statement and I completely believe that it belongs on the album.

I believe Elizabeth My Dear is a great short tune on the album, but I said it was filler only based on the fact its less than a minute long. It definitely isn't The Meaning of Soul on DBTT. If any song could've been replaced it I would see Standing Here or Where Angels Play replace Don't Stop.
