Different styles at different times of that infamous decade that was the 80's. Both influential to Oasis (Stone Roses more so) Both have cult followings and both were around for a relatively short amount of time.
Have at it
EDIT: I do realize there's a N in Manchester. My apologies to any Mancs

Iv just evened up the score with a nod to the Stone Roses. Any "must listen to" recommendations for the Smiths, iv been meaning to give them a go for a while.

I really like The Stone Roses, but I'm a huge fan of The Smiths. Everything about them is brilliant. Johnny Marr's guitar playing is perfect, and Morrissey is a modern day poet - easily my favourite lyricist. He's the combination of Elvis and Oscar Wilde.

I agree though personally he is a better sing than elvis. I love that its fifty/fifty i love both bands, went for smiths though on this occasion.

This was a tough one. I can honestly say that I fell in love with music BECAUSE of The Smiths. Yes, at first I thought the lyrics were quite depressing however, Johnny's guitar just uplifted all that "drabness" I was perceiving. Then I really started to listen to the lyrics and also somewhat educate myself on England and its culture/life style (I'm in the States and some of the things Moz was singing about didn't resonate with my everyday life), then Morrissey's lyrics were actually funny and most importantly true to life. Which brings me to the Roses. I mean, what can I say, pure genius, I LOVE them. Roses till I die! However my vote is for The Smiths. No Smiths= NO Roses, NO Oasis etc etc etc. Iv just evened up the score with a nod to the Stone Roses. Any "must listen to" recommendations for the Smiths, iv been meaning to give them a go for a while. Go and have a listen to Hatful of Hallow, good compilation Lp with some very tasty cuts. Track wise, What Difference Does It Make, Still Ill, Barbarism Begins At Home, Handsome Devil, Miserable Lie, What She Said, Ask, Panic and personal fave, Headmaster Ritual.

Good work Jilliam, Ill give them tracks a listen. You should buy The Sound Of The Smiths. It's essential you listen to songs like Hand In Glove, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out, How Soon Is Now... too many to name!

Argh, I CAN'T CHOOSE! Might go for the Smiths, They had 4 classic albums the roses had 1 That's pretty much my criteria for picking The Smiths over the Roses. If the latter made 4 classic albums, instead of 1 classic and one decidedly average album, my choice would be easier.

Both great bands but the diversity of songs like Please Please Please...., Headmaster Ritual, How Soon Is Now, Charming Man, Rush and a Push, Panic (I could go on) is why I pick the Smiths. Also, Brown's lyrics I can largely ignore. Morrissey's captivate and enthrall every time I hear them.

I have an intense hatred towards that Morrisey fellow which means I can't listen to The Smiths. So it's The Stone Roses all the way.

See the thing is, that there are soo many good tracks its impossible to narrow it down to just a handful. In all seriousness, Id say that 95% of The Smiths catalog is BIBLICAL!

I've made this poll before, and I'm just as split as ever.
Smiths have great melody and lyrics, but Stone Roses has energy and more party mood. Tough call, but on this day, as I can't remember how I voted on my polls on the same topic, I'd go with The Smiths. More songs, I think, is what sways my opinion.
