The Smiths, they're just magical (Not saying the roses aren't, but Morressy, MArr & Co. can speak to you on so many different levels)

And its all tied up once again. I've been listening to the smiths over the past couple months and I can say that i fully get them and love their albums and they do have more great songs but I still prefer the Stone roses. both are legendary bands you have the melodic guitar playing of Marr and the cleverness in the Smiths and you just have sheer talent in Stone Roses with Squire, Reni and Mani as musicians and Brown's frontman skills.

I voted a few days ago, but I'm putting my two pence into the mixing pot. The Stone Roses are far superior, they influenced Oasis and are therefore top of the pops for me. If I wanted to slit my wrists, then the Smiths would be a good band. But, since I'm a happy guy, I prefer Brownie et al.

Surprised you didn't say you chose Stone Roses over The Smiths simply because Ian Brown has got a swagger.

From what I've seen Noel say, the Smiths seem to be a greater influence on him. How does that sit with your view of the world?

They are both great in my eyes. Morrissey and Ian Brown are one of a kind frontmen, and Marr and Squire are brilliant guitarists. I'd have to go with The Smiths simply because of weight of material. The Roses only really captured their brilliance on one LP, The Smiths did on at least two.

Despite my username, I'm going with the Roses.
Two of my absolute favourite bands and, even though the Smiths are more consistent, the Roses' debut is one of my all time favourites (top 4 status).
Morrissey vs Ian Brown - Morrissey without a doubt the better lyricist and singer. Brown obviously influenced Liam's style, particularly in Oasis' very early days and has the dance moves that are so bad they're good. Morrissey definitely a clear winner in this round though.
Marr vs Squire - Both top guitarists but with different styles. I can't decide between the two of them.
Rourke vs Mani - Both excellent bassists. The riff on Rusholme Ruffians is superb but I'll have to go with Mani for this one. The 'I Wanna Be Adored' intro is about as exciting a start to an album you can get.
Joyce vs Reni - The rhythm sections of both bands were incredibly tight and contributed heavily to both bands' sounds. Again it's very hard to separate but I'll probably go with Reni on this one. For no good reason other than I'm feeling in a Roses kind of mood today.
Comparing individual members doesn't help to create an overall picture though. The Smiths revived guitar music in a bleak world of synth pop and hair metal and are one of the most important bands of the last 50 years. The Roses may not have been as influential but their music connects with me slightly more than the Smiths' does.

Smiths. I don't like the Roses's second album at all, well, most of it, their debut is brilliant though. So that means I like more Smiths than Stone Roses songs.

The Roses. The Smiths got more albums, but that's not important for me. The Stone Roses is my fav album after Definitely Maybe and WTSMG. Second Coming is great, but it's an album that got the "Be Here Now effect":
all the fans love it, but people in general don't appreciate it because the previous one is legendary. Love Spreads is the coolest song ever, Begging You is brilliant, Breaking Into Heaven is amazing, Squire's guitar work is insane, Good Times, luv it, Driving South is their most underrated song and the other are good. Oh and Ten Storey Love song, 'nuff said.

Years after this poll was conducted and The Smiths keep on getting further and further in front of The Stone Roses.
My opinion on The Roses hasn't changed, though I've come to the conclusion I think their debut album is incredibly overrated. I used to love it back when I was 17, but for a ten track album, there are three duff tunes - Elizabeth My Dear, Don't Stop and Bye Bye Badman are poor, and the first half of I Am The Resurrection is the best thing on the album but the second half is just boring jamming in my opinion. Suffice to say, they are not ageing too well in my opinion.
I think Morrissey is a far more original and unique front man than Ian Brown (and pretty much anyone else) and his lyrics are much more meaningful. There's a gritty, grounded realism to The Smiths that give them a more human element than The Roses, making them timeless.
And I said this weeks ago, and something Noel Gallagher said too, but The Smiths have at least 6 albums worth of top quality compared to just 2 albums of Stone Roses quality (debut album and b-sides collection.... I think Second Coming is a load of rubbish personally).
