Smiths have great melody and lyrics, but Stone Roses has energy and more party mood. Right, for me the Roses are more of a party-get-my-groove-on-light-a-spliff-kinda mood band. The Smiths are a dance-a-jig-about-the-house-sing-outloud-in-the-car-or-shower-kinda band. If I play Barbarism Begins At Home, woodstock loud...it's ON! Fuckin LOVE the bassline on that one.

The outro of this song is Andy Rourke's masterpiece.

The outro of this song is Andy Rourke's masterpiece. I find the outro of I Am The Resurrection just as cool. Id like to have whatever Andy was on when he created that bass sequence. The boot "El Dorado" probably has the best version of this song known to date. Love that they play it during the set, then Johnny wants to do it again as the encore....as they say in England....ORGASMIC!

Love both, damn this one is a hard one! I am gonna have to go with the Smiths, the collection of tunes is more vast than the Stone Roses! Still love them both!

The Queen Is Dead is a marvellous song. I love Mike Joyce's drumming and Johnny Marr's wah-wah peddle effect is pure awesome.

Two incredible bands, without a doubt, but I've listened to the Roses debut more then all of The Smith's albums combined!

I picked The Stone Roses, but only because I haven't really got into The Smiths...but I will give them another go and with any luck I will get into them

Now that I think about it, have The Stone Roses ever had a single as good as William It Was Really Nothing or Ask? The intro to Ask makes me smile like no other song.

Smiths were depressing and a bit freaky Clearly havnt listened to the lyrics then. You don't need to have depressing lyrics to sound depressing! In this way, The Smiths revolutionised popular music. I find Morrissey's voice annoys me more than any other I've heard - I'd honestly rather listen to Mika screaming in my ear or have Yoko Ono serenade me. I think his voice is boring, monotonous, and lazy. Maybe that's him going "My dull voice represents the mediocrity of English life" or whatever, I dunno. I don't care who they influenced or how popular they are. Admittedly I've only heard about 20 of their songs but I've never come across one I could say I liked. I can understand why everyone loves them though. I reckon if someone else was on lead vocals, I'd like them, the songs by themselves definitely aren't the worst I've heard.

If you think his voice is monotonous, you should listen to Rank.

First time I heard Morrissey was back in 2004, with his comeback album, and I never once thought his voice was weird or rubbish. I love his voice - only he could sing a song such as There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.

That's fair enough. After all, a certain Liam Gallagher's voice divides opinion, but we the fans love it so fuck everyone else's opinion.

Both amazing bands. The Roses might have been better, but I'll go with the Smiths because they have much more good material.

I know I already voted, but I'm listening to Stone Roses right now
I think if the Roses had released more stuff, I'd lean towards them. But The Smiths have more quality songs because they were around longer.
Really is a tough call. I created this exact poll many times in the past, too.
Very difficult vote. And I think the results of ~50-50 show that.

And I think the results of ~50-50 show that. I think The Stone Roses debut is better than any album The Smiths released but The Smiths were much more consistent, and I also agree with Noel Gallagher's comment when he said The Smiths never made a bad song. There's not one song of The Smiths that I have skipped when it comes on to my ipod. The Stone Roses were filled with many duds, mostly on Second Coming, so I don't know how they would of been able to go back to being as good as they were if they continued. Also, probably the fact that Morrissey's solo work pisses all over Ian Brown's is probably swaying me heavily towards The Smiths.

its arguable but even if the roses burned out I dont think the smiths have released anything as good as the roses debut. Still though I'm biased I really haven't listened to the smiths as much as I should have.
