But he just fails to deliver on Humbug on everything - vocals, lyrics, you name it. Not necessarily. In one or two cases, his approach on both counts is quite apt. The problem is that he sustains it for the duration of the album. That's my problem with the album. It's the same level of everything the whole way through. An "Dancefloor" "View" would have been great to break up the album a bit. Dangerous Animals however is probably the worst song by a band I've heard since...ever

After about 5-6 listens to the album from start to finish the only two decent songs are "My Propeller" and "Crying Lightning"
The rest really is utter shit. What were they trying to do with this album. One word to discribe it = DULL

I really like fire and the thud. It's much better then the acoustic version that was floating around before the album came out.

after listening to this album for a few days I definitely dig it. They obviously went in a new direction and I applaud them for doing so. Did anyone else read the article on them in the new Rolling Stone? I know that magazine isn't the greatest but that particular article is a good read. But getting back to the album..... I'd say My Propeller, Crying Lightning, Secret Door, Potion Approaching, and Pretty Visitors are great. But then again that's my opinion, and it really doesn't matter to anyone who wanted to hear the same style as the first cd.
on a side note.... anyone hear jim morrison singing at the end of potion approaching?

Secret Door and Dance Little Liar must be my favourites...
Alex is so diferent in so many ways... Must be the drugs. It's their 3rd album, you know... Long hair, darkness, drugs...

Cornerstone is my favorite. Excellent story and more upbeat song/production than the downers on the album

Great acoustic version.... Shows what the song is like stripped down.

....And Humbug went to #1 last week. For all those that argued that this would be the end of them and that it wouldn't hit #1, suck it.

That acoustic version is top stuff. Some people complain about Alex's voice but I think its great.

I really think the album is great. They've shown great growth on each new album. Musically, this is easily their best album. That being said, I think a lot of the lyrics are too mysterious and actually a bit boring. If they can match the great texture of this album with the character and perspective of Alex's old songs they will make a classic.

FWN is a really clever album. There's no doubt Turner can be a clever lyricists - Old Yellow Bricks and This House is a Circus are both amazing. But he just fails to deliver on Humbug on everything - vocals, lyrics, you name it. And they still lack melody in most of their songs, which I think really hinders them from reaching their full potential. I think this album is a deliberate attempt to turn off people like you and get a 'more discerning' fanbase as I think one reviewer put it. They don't want to be the Oasis of the generation, to put it another way. They want to move on and challenge themselves and their audience. 100% agree with that. I bought the album last Saturday and have been listening to it all week in the car. I wasn't expecting much from it after reading all the opinions of it on here, but I have to say that I love it.

Buying an album does not mean you like the album...... You'll never know if you gonna like an album if you don't buy it (and to listen to it) and buying an album of your favourite band doesn't mean you will love that album (DOYS for my case). Back to topic, I'm enjoying "Humbug". I quite like it. These 4 young men aren't afraid to try something new and it's a good thing. Looking forward to see them again in November.

AND Buying an album does not mean you like the album...... Right, so we cant judge an album based on sales or critics. Then what? Our own opinions? Well I think the album is fucking great. And I don't care of album sales don't matter, that's was for all the idiots who said this would be career suicide. And look, #1 again! Clearly they're drowning themselves.

good grief. N4LE or whatever the fuck your name is, do you have a pay pal account? If you don't, start one please. I'll be the first to contribute $10 to it if you promise to get the fuck out of here. I'm sure you can rake in more cash the first hour it opens up than you'll make the rest of the year.
I already visit a tenth of what I used to namely due to your moronic, knuckle-dragging rants, but fuck all, it has to be impossible to get any worse. It's like someone stuffed a turd in your mouth and you feel compelled to spray shit on everyone else. enough already.
Anyways, for the album, I have to say I was bit unimpressed from the start. I wanted about 5 "pretty visitors" and got one.
The remaining 9 songs are a bit of a rollercoaster, quality-wise, but at least 5 of them sound great to me after about 7 run-throughs.
My Propeller is actually a solid, ominous, opener, and crying lightning is perfectly fine. Cornerstone, dance little liar, fire and the thud, and potion approaching are all above average.
And while I'm not NUTS about the album, that doesn't mean it isn't good.
The intent seems pretty clear: take a different angle and create another side/dimension to the band.
You'll lose some (fans)along the way, keep your die-hards, and hone some critical respect. I'm not shocked at all by the wide-spread critical acclaim, it's a fine album, just not a text-book "monkeys" outing.
alright then.
